@Z999Artur It's the combination of the potassium nitrate and the sugar. Just sugar won't work, neither will potassium nitrate on its own. When you 'melt' both powders, there will be a chemical reaction, forming a new material. That's the substance that will make the smoke.

Did this in a school lab today, we mixed sugar and potasium nitrate in a flask above a budsen burner. as soon as the suger fully caramelised, there was an extreme reaction similar to that to a rocket take off. it was a five foot purple flame! i kid you not.

you dont need to have pottasium nitrate to make a smoke bomb like this. all you have to do is mix together sodium chlorate and sugar. DO NOT COOK IT THOUGH! only mix the powders and then add some dye and mix it up then just light it.
