I had a kitten that was like that when one of the other cats tried to shove her away from the bowl. One day, she'd had enough, as the bigger cat tried to head-butt her away, she held a paw over the food dish and hissed. Big cat didn't pay her no mind, BIG MISTAKE, HUGE! She swiped at his face, he jumped back with a WTF look and walked away. Neither he, or the others ever botherd her again.

Alright, i see how everyone is saying its not food agression fine, but one thing i do want to point out. NEVER pick up a kitten by their scruff, only a mother cat can really do this right, you could be and most likely are hurting the cat, but also yea, if the cat is showing that behavior over food you are giving to a group you really should do separate bowls, that is food aggression even if it is defending its food.All cats wild or domestic show it.
