xiii wasn't a game crafted for perfect gameplay. every other aspect is perfected though from the battle engine to music, graphics, and the storyline especially. so what if it doesn't allow perfect freedom? so what if half the game is linear? the goal of every final fantasy is to have a great story and a vast world to set it in and i think xiii does an incredible job of doing that

if you think FF XIII is bad. just think about FF XIII as a stepping stone for square enix to make better games in the future. besides I like the story in FF XIII better than FF XII so they're improving imo. one thing I'd like to see from the next FF would be the creative setting they've done in FF 78910. 80% of my reason to play FF is cuz of the story, FF XII was not to my taste, FF XIII is better but not really there yet. Hope FF XV's gonna get even better

I understand that they were trying to attract Western Gamers, but to do so, they struck a horrible balance. It isn't an action game, and it isn't a JRPG. At times it just feels like one long Quick Time Event to me. They game made lots of money, but at what cost? Will I have to wait another half a decade for a game that I'll lose faith in? I hope not.

The downfall of FFXIII is that their is hardly any freedom to explore until you get toward the end but even that is limited. And the battle's are boring just keep pressing X and LI a bunch of times till the monster is dead.

the game is actually decent, and skipping cutscenes saves a hell of a lot of time...unlike FFX damn lady yunelesca battle had to wait 20 minutes before you could face a boss that could kick your ass.

@OryanStar No exploration just long corridors, 20 hour long tutorial - yes it is a tutorial, monotonous game in general as it is basically pure combat with no variation, only being able to control 1 character, not turn-based (although it essentially is) oh and Vanille.... lol is that enough? If you have never played any FF games before and you're into grinding MMo's then I guess I can see why you might like this.
