OOOOKay, lets clarify things here. Imagine a ladder. If you take the two opposite ends and twist them in opposite directions (like a candy wrapper) then you have the shape cosmetic companies use in advertising about BS dna lotions.

Now, take another ladder and wrap it around a telephone pole! That would be DNA!! If you remove the telephone pole you will be able to see straight through the double helix if looking down its length. Take a look at an x-ray diffraction image of real dna. Same thing.

@zuluknob No it's not, the gold and silver outer edges form two diametric helixes, a single helix would be just the gold edge rotating around a longitudinal axis. Just google 'double helix' and the images of DNA that come up are exactly the same structure as this shape, just twisting more tightly.

I think the actual shape of DNA is different, instead of being a symmetrical double helix like this, it is more like a triple helix with one helix missing, so that the two sides are not across from each other like this.
