Well, THAT was perfection in a quite imperfect world. To have that degree of control AND emotion in a live performance. Genius. When it comes down to it, the only possible rivals to Karen as the greatest female singer ever are Aretha and Ella - all brilliant, irreplaceable and one of a kind.
That is so right, but she never could integrate the parts to overcome her anorexia. It is tragic. We stil feel the loss, because her songs also have to do with our lives in a very deep way we cannot put into words.
Love this talented lady and her equally talented brother! But that amazing voice and her wonderful phrasing are truly unique! Miss hearing that lady singing live, so I'll have to be content to play and replay all of their albums. Poignant memories with this song, especially.

Excellent singer. If she had been a Beatle, every other act would pack their bags and go home. I think that although she had a beautiful voice, it was NOT perfect. This is part of what is so appealing about her. At times she sounded like "the girl next door" that she truly was. A "perfect" voice sounds too mechanical, too textbook. Viva imperfection! And about sounding like an angel? Thank goodness not. Your average angel sounds like booming thunder. Thank God for the voice of woman.

Thank God Herb Alpert had the foresight to give them carte blanche in the recording studios, right from the start! Also, after "Offering" was released, and was not a big seller, people were asking Alpert to release the Carpenters from A&M. He told his colleagues he would give them one more chance.
Alpert suggested that the Carpenters record a Burt Bacharach song called "(They Long to Be) Close to You." The rest is History.
Heaven sure must be nicer with Karen Carpenter up there. I miss her!

If you've never been right before in your life, you certainly are now. I really don't think there was one flaw in her voice. Timeless! The only other singer that impresses me with amazing lyrical prowess is Eva Cassidy, and to our misfortune, she as well has left this world.

Truly a great voice -- a great singer. Notice how she doesn't stray from the melody, unlike many of today's "singers" who try to impress with vocal acrobatics. The true greats (Karen, Garland, Ronstadt -- just to think of a few) kept it simple, which is really more difficult unless you have a brilliant instrument like these ladies. They sing/sang from their souls.
Don't think they'll ever be a better voice on earth. Ill always wonder what other great songs both her and her brother would have produced later in their careers.

Karen's born in the same year as my mother, and ever since I've heard her for the first time on a vinyl, probably when I was around 7 years old, I was totally amazed by that angel's voice and that has never changed. There is not and never will be any female singer like Karen

Truly a great voice -- a great singer. Notice how she doesn't stray from the melody, unlike many of today's "singers" who try to impress with vocal acrobatics. The true greats (Karen, Garland, Ronstadt -- just to think of a few) kept it simple, which is really more difficult unless you have a brilliant instrument like these ladies. They sing/sang from their souls.

Don't think they'll ever be a better voice on earth. Ill always wonder what other great songs both her and her brother would have produced later in their careers.

Let's touch on a sore note. Who wrote all these sad song for this amazing girl to sing? Seems they somehow convinced her she would never find a true love. Little did she know of the unmitigated love her fans had in their hearts for her. I do hope she is now aware of our adoration for the gal that possessed the BEST female singing voice EVER. I will listen to her forever, with no excuses, no regrets. I know perfection when I hear it. Thanks, Karen, R.I.P. :(

Karen's born in the same year as my mother, and ever since I've heard her for the first time on a vinyl, probably when I was around 7 years old, I was totally amazed by that angel's voice and that has never changed. There is not and never will be any female singer like Karen

Yes in an interview with Karen she told the interviewer this was her favorite song and one that she had trouble getting thru without crying so that in itself is enough to get the kleenex box going with the dmotions she puts in this song and her rich Heavenly voice. I'm kinda like everyone else here and dont think we will ever have a voice this pure again. Karen even though you never found your ture love her on earth we all love you always with the love you showed the short time you were here.
