  • I keep my tool rest at a height comfortable for my height. I find that students who are taller need it a bit higher. I suppose as a rule of thumb that the tool rest slightly above center is fine. I grind my skew with a hollow grind and have a slightly convex edge (along the length of the edge). I hope this helps. Basically, it must be super sharp to perform.

    good luck

  • My Robert Sorby DVD shows to raise the tool-rest above center to use the skew tool. It's hard to tell in the video, but is your Skew ground concave or flat? I've seen so many videos on this, I'm very confused about this tool! Thanks for your input.

  • I got lucky and the 24" tool rest came with my lathe, the only trouble is when I teach and have to demonstrate on a 12" rest, I'm spoiled! You can make your own out of wood and simply screw a piece of steel to the top for similar results,

    good luck,

    Pete

  • where did you find that tool rest setup? I can see how for longer spindles that long rest would be awesome, and really speed things up!
