  • hurry up!

  • awsome.

  • I don't care how old you are, trains are pretty damn cool.

  • That is huge!

  • The Pat Metheny makes it for me! nice video too :)

  • omgsh is that 700? the event that happens there in spring she comes by too!!!! oh and the best part I HAVE BEEN IN HER!!!!!!! she is a beautiful (and HOT... good looking but it was also hot in there.) love her she is a good lil locomotive. but what locomotives arent?

  • I'd imagine OR&N 197 will also be doing this at some point in the future.

  • wounder how many miles that thing has

  • Sucks these steam engines all exist on the West Coast not much here in the East lol I mean you can go to certain places to see them, but less likely to find one on a mainline running any where near by

  • Is this the engine that's moved to the grand canyon?

  • @DaftStrings: I have heard nothing about this train leaving Portland, but I'm not in the circles of people close to the train and it's management. However, knowing how much folks here in the pacific NW are attached to this train, I would sincerely doubt that it would be moved anywhere anytime soon!

  • @DaftStrings SP&S 700 is still in Portland, and since it's on the National Register of Histroic Places, I don't think it's going anywhere soon.

SP&S 539 is the engine that moved down to Arizona, and used to be in Battle Ground. It's an almost identical model to 700. It's a shame a few months after it moved, the Grand Canyon line shut down their steam service, so 539 will probably never run again...

  • Nice camera work mate....Awesome whistle....What a beautiful beast.... young fella got a front row seat ....

  • thanks. That front row seat was a bit of a liability when the whistle blew -- it was so loud it vibrated through my chest. quite a beast, indeed.

  • CHOO CHOO!

  • Is it just me, or is this the most gigantic locomotive ever?

  • excellent mucic for this amazing vid! Really breathtaking, the big and mighty steam machine! Something moves in our hearts when watching the slow and majestic power of these iron beautiful beasts, :)

Their powerful steam breathe reaches our souls...

    Thanx for sharing!

  • That is one mean whistle. I love the sound of steam trains.

  • thks 4 8 4

  • Great video

  • Outstanding video! Thank you so much for sharing this. We are taking our 6 yr old twin boys on this train Dec 4th. Can't wait!

  • oops, I meant Dec5th, 2009.

  • Its nice is it a northern or Berkshire type loco ?

  • northern

  • the tradeoff between the train and the boat is an old tradition that goes back for decades. Glad to see they still do it

  • God... what was this song again... I know I've heard this song. Someone please tell me!

  • And her whistle is awesome. Not as low and... dead.. sounding as the Daylight's.

  • Pat Metheny: Last Train Home

  • ok thanks.

  • The song is by Pat Metheny

The cd is called Still Life Talking

  • Hermosa locomotora aca en Chile tenemos la 820 que tambien es una increible maquina...saludos a quien grabo este video

  • muchos gracias. La familia de me esposa es Chilenos--de Santiago. I'm hopeful we'll get down to visit your beautiful country sometime.

  • Really nice video, good job!

  • Its amazing how big they are.

  • re: Oaks Park track: the old Niles interurban cars built in 1905 served regularly until the early '50s and were the fastest cars on the Oregon City line, regularly doing 55mph in the straight stretches. You have to wonder sometimes about the need for the extensive catenary systems of modern LRV systems.

This remaining track (now single) was privately held last I knew. Who owns it now and how often are steam trips scheduled?

  • This is one of the best steam videos ever. It is so well produced that I'm wondering if you might not have the original in higher resolution? Any chance you can repost it? It's also an outstanding example of rails WITH trails. Of course I fondly remember when it was Portland Traction rails.

  • It was double track from the Hawthorne Bridge (and across the bridge) to where the two lines separated at the Waverly Golf Course (Golf Junction). The downtown loop went north on 2nd to Washington and south on 1st. The rail was all #70. There was one riverside siding originally where log cars dumped into the river. That siding was where all the old wood interurban cars were burned for scrap. In my youth they scrapped all the Niles cars and the one remaining Mt. Hood Railway car. More...

  • Steam Train, Pat Metheny....WoW...love the boat tootin' at the steam....one of the greatest video i've seen....Top 5 in my book. Good work!!!!

  • Finally, a Portland steam video of something other than 4449! I like 4449, but the other Portland steamers are great too. AND I LOVE HER WHISTLE!!!

  • thank you for the video, my 2 year old is obsessed with steam trains he went nuts this morning when he saw it.

  • No kidding, I am 30 and I still freak out every time I see one of those!!!

    Cheers,

    5-9

  • mine too :)

  • omg i never thought those kinda trains were so tall

  • This is strangly comforting

  • "bye bye train" :P

  • És un vídeo impressionant i una locomotora més impressionant encara. FELICITACIONS!!

  • I LOVE STEAM TRAINS!!!!!!

  • ME TOO

  • me too

  • @coster993 me too !

  • At 5:20, The boat and train was saying hi to each other.

    Great capture of the horn.

  • BRAVO MAESTRO *****

  • Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays...What a great song !!!

  • Wow the cars have steam brakes!!! you dont see that anymore, and they also arent using a deisel pusher either. love that train.

  • it got song

  • Nice video. By the way, what is the background music that you added? Can you tell me the title or provide a music file?

  • I'm pretty sure it's Pat Metheny, "Last train home". A perfect song.

    Thanks for the vid!

  • why do excursion always park in this same spot, ive seen this and SP 4449 here

  • This is the Oaks Park Station stop on the Springwater Corridor. it is the most convenient place for the excursion train folks to set up their big tent for tickets, etc., and it is right next to the parking lot for Oaks Park Amusement Park, so train-goers have a place to park thier cars. it's also a pretty spot, right next to the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.

  • Go to Googel maps and go to Portland,Organ than go to SE 4th Ave/SE Caruthers St and right there is #700. Then stay in Portland and go to SE Holgate Blvd and go to the empty part of the yard where there is no track and the Round House wich she is stored is there.

  • LOL at 5:44 where you see a gap in the firebox!!

  • It also could look like it was used in "The Polar Express"!

  • The engine used in Polar Express was Pere Marquette 2-8-4 #1225 from Owosso, MI.

  • Think about how much coal that the fireman has to shovel in the locomotive!!

  • An engine that size would be equipped with a mechanical stoker. Much easier on the back!

  • no, but it would if it were oil fired.

  • Unfortunately we don`t have big steam trains like this. Very nice, look ad my video movies and watch smaller steam trams of the Nederlands.

    Thanks Bye bye big steamtrains!!!

  • That was a big train, a video to treasure

  • Lucky kids! My 3-yr old loves the video. He'd like to know though, why is the train going backwards at the end?

  • The route that the train takes is a little odd. It moves forward, south, about 1/4 mile, stops at SE Spokane St and then reverses for about 2 miles or so, northward, towards downtown Portland. Then it stops again and moves forward, south, back to the original starting point at Oaks Park.

  • Great video, thanks. I loved the shots where you are moving at the same speed as the train, studying it moving, then looking over to the boat on the water, great shooting!

  • I'm glad you liked it--the train moves at the perfect speed to do those shots, and the path is right alongside the tracks, making it pretty straight forward. Pulling my son in the trailer and negotiating the path with other people walking and riding along made me feel good that I simply kept from crashing into the fence.

  • That's the stern wheeler Portland Rose isn't it? Or is that the Willamette river queen? Either way it's a great shot.

  • harry potter lol

  • name of song pls

  • Pat Metheny Group: Long Way Home

  • ah whoops, the song is "Last Train Home"

  • That was awesome, I love how the vessel and train communicated there.

  • but the music's too sad ! smoke get's in your eyes! and is that cycling and filming? brilliant...

  • the last of the good old fashioned steam powered trains

  • My little two year old adores this clip, every time we search YouTube for steam trains, this is the one he goes for!

  • so glad he likes it! what part does he like best?

  • About 2:30 in, where all the train chugs past with all the steam!

  • Steam trains & clipper ships,are magnificent.

  • cant beat the steam train can you

  • Nice video! But she is her own soundtrack methinks!

  • I really enjoyed the soundtrack, especially since it did not mute/muffle the sounds of the train.

  • Beautiful Beast!

  • Super ride-along camerawork and a terrific train.

  • thanks. It was fun to try and keep the camera steady and simultaneously keep from crashing into the fence. The 4449 holiday train is running this year and I am currently shooting similar footage for a new video to be uploaded soon!

  • Sounds like the Amtrack song to me. Nice video, & thanks for sharing! Yes, the riverboat & train whistling to each other was very cool.

  • babies!

  • That thing is beautiful. Thank you so much for that.

  • pat metheny....last train home...good song. cool video, my 3 year old loved it.

  • Loved how the riverboat, & the train said hello to each other! Nice video!

  • Great litlle movie! My son loves it and wants to watch it all the time. Well done with the Pat Metheny-music. Thanks!

    Arold Langeveld- The Hague- Holland

  • choo choo

  • My dad hired on the SP&S in 1944 and was the fireman on this engine several times.

  • An awsome Northern style steamer still rollin the rails. Thanks much.

  • I love the trade off between the boat and the engine. Also nice song to go along with the video.

  • The boat whistle took me by surprise--I was busy with the camera. The responding engine whistle, some 12-14 feet away from me, was so loud it vibrated through my chest. Glad you like it.

  • right at 4:10, very beautiful dude thanks

  • i need to change my trousers. that was life affirming. spectacular

  • Nice vid

  • Very good.

  • Love the music! "Last Train Home" by Pat Metheny, my favorite Pat Metheny song.

  • One of my fav's bigger than the 2 2-8-4's th&b ry. use to have which both are scrapped in 1953. Sad.

  • Good job riding your bike and shooting the train at the same time. If I attempted that I would probably fall off.

  • Shooting the train riding the bike, and also pulling my 2-yr-old in a trailer behind me...I did come close to clipping the fence a few times. Would've been ugly but ultimately maybe a more interesting video.

  • Would be a great video if you drop the music (the engine IS THE MUSIC) and drop the narration at the end.

  • Your video is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1920's railway centenary tobacco cards and a short clip of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway.

  • 最爱我们的前进

  • I love all steam trains..I have a lot of videos and know alot about different trains but never seen this one. What a great surprise to find a fine one like this.....

  • Big drive wheels on that sucker. I like that deep "steamboat" type whistle.

  • That was really Great!

  • Good job...my son just loves it!

  • dam t hats a big fucker

  • SP&S #700 - The 'Lady of Portland' - the most beautiful Northern in existence. We love her to bits.

tac, mrs tac, and the family ig and crow

  • nice pacing shots, i couldn't do that when i chased on my bike.

  • This train moves at a perfect speed to ride easily alongside.

  • WOW

  • I love 700!
