Just recommeded pregnant women or infants not eat more than 170grams a week. Even with Dolphins and Tuna, fish eating diet is healthier than beef/pork based western diet, grown by hormone additives. Japanese have the longest life expectancy in the world and studies show Japanese are more intelligent (higher IQ) than westerners by 6-7 points.

Have the dolphin slaughters stopped? I doubt it. There were many protests in Japan when this movie was screened because many don't see anything wrong with what they are doing and they saw it as anti-Japanese. Without dolphins, underwater ecosystems would suffer and inevitably crumble. We kill cows because some people's diets require the protein from their meat. Besides, cows are not even near endangerment, unlike dolphins.

You do make a good point about the oceanic ecosystem, but I disagree about diets that people require because of protein because fruits & vegetables give enough if not the same amount of protein as meat.
@shazil888 Well, you can get sufficient proteins from nuts, however, but vegetables are very poor in providing protein. Soy is a decent alternative of meat, but meat is still a very good source of protein. You can hunt birds and large game, and that is similar to a predator catching it's prey. You don't have to get your meat from a mass-slaughtering manufacturer (Although most people do).
Dolphin meat isn't expensive. Neither is whale. I oughta know I just bought some whale meat a couple of days ago. And from the beginning of life on the planet, species have gone extinct. Over millions and millions of years, about 90% of ALL the animals that have EVER lived on this planet are extinct. They are GONE! They are GONE and the ecosystem continued without them.

I just got back from Monterey and we saw Wild Dolphins from the window of a restaurant and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and it made me think back to this movie.

This just makes me cry. The Cove itself made me cry too, especially when he walks in with the television, showing the truth to everyone in the room. "Most of the animals are killed instantaneously' at least, that's what the Japanese guy said and then all of a sudden, there's Ric O' Barry, showing the footage of the animals dying "instantaneously". It's interesting to me that "The Cove" and "Food Inc." were both nominated. One of the main points Ric O Barry suggests to some of the Japanese government agents to remove dolphins from the fish markets is because of "mercury poisoning" from the meat. "Food Inc." also is about the raping of healthy, natural foods. If people were more informed about their food as in "Food Inc." no one would want to buy mercury laden (2000 ppm to be exact) dolphin meat. It's all interrelated. It's all about food.

I think a lot of viewers inhere misunderstand the message of this documentary: It's not to say "OMG is so evil to kill dolphins"; it's to show that there a completely unjustified and extremely inhumane killing going on. There's no need to kill the "excess dolphins", most of the japanese population don't even want the meat - this is only done because it's tradition, because the Taiji whalers are afraid of loosing money and because it's convenient not to change.

Have the dolphin slaughters stopped? I doubt it. There were many protests in Japan when this movie was screened because many don't see anything wrong with what they are doing and they saw it as anti-Japanese. The only way it will stop is if there's a culture change in Japan and unfortunagely that's unlikely to happen any time soon. In general, the Japanese attitude to animals is sickening. Without dolphins, underwater ecosystems would suffer and inevitably crumble. We kill cows because some people's diets require the protein from their meat. Besides, cows are not even near endangerment, unlike dolphins.
Dolphin food is expensive, which means only the rich people eat it. They eat it because they're rich enough to, not because it is required.

You do make a good point about the oceanic ecosystem, but I disagree about diets that people require because of protein because fruits & vegetables give enough if not the same amount of protein as meat.

Soy is a decent alternative of meat, but meat is still a very good source of protein. You can hunt birds and large game, and that is similar to a predator catching it's prey. You don't have to get your meat from a mass-slaughtering manufacturer (Although most people do).

If every dolphin died tomorrow, it would NOT cause a MAJOR extinction event (wouldn't matter much at all). And about snowball earth, nobody really knows. Some think it influenced evolution, which pleases me greatly because perhaps snowball earth allowed us humans to be here, as we are today.

This just makes me cry. The Cove itself made me cry too, especially when he walks in with the television, showing the truth to everyone in the room. "Most of the animals are killed instantaneously' at least, that's what the Japanese guy said and then all of a sudden, there's Ric O' Barry, showing the footage of the animals dying "instantaneously". Just amazing (not the killing, but revealing the truth). You did a great job and you deserved this Oscar so much. Lots of Love from The Netherlands.

It's interesting to me that "The Cove" and "Food Inc." were both nominated. One of the main points Ric O Barry suggests to some of the Japanese government agents to remove dolphins from the fish markets is because of "mercury poisoning" from the meat. "Food Inc." also is about the raping of healthy, natural foods. If people were more informed about their food as in "Food Inc." no one would want to buy mercury laden (2000 ppm to be exact) dolphin meat. It's all interrelated. It's all about food.

It´s a great story and what they are doing demands the utmost respect.
BUT stating it´s the best "documentary ever made" is too easy.. To be one of the best it must embody all the different disciplines; camerawork, story, editing etc.
If you base it on solely their actions, "Burma VJ" should get the Oscar. The video journalist are in direct risk of bodily harm or death every day and many of them died or "vanished" into the prisons..

I think a lot of viewers inhere misunderstand the message of this documentary: It's not to say "OMG is so evil to kill dolphins"; it's to show that there a completely unjustified and extremely inhumane killing going on. There's no need to kill the "excess dolphins", most of the japanese population don't even want the meat - this is only done because it's tradition, because the Taiji whalers are afraid of loosing money and because it's convenient not to change.
