@jfeltes The tape is not to protect the mirror from smudge, that could be easily clean. The tape is to protect the mirror from scratches until the rest of the projector is done, and ready for testing.
Did you check the link? In the link there is an instructable of how to do that, There I did explain that you don't need the mirrors if you not too worry about the size of your box.

would be easier if you wore gloves so you didn't smudge mirrors

I wood really like to try to make this but do u really need the Mirrors or can i just put it all in one line ?
