  • Why the video edit? How many times did you let it glow before starting?

  • @Oregon696969 You let the glow plug light go out then continue to turn the key, the engine turns over. if there is any kind of delay in this process, you have to switch off and begin again. Because Im holding the camera and trying to film it, this is what you see when I have to switch off and start again. Im not switching the ignition on several times just to keep making the glow plugs work before I fire her up. Im demonstrating the lights that come on and go out before starting. Thanks :-)

  • This video isn't relevant because the engine was started before you recorded the cold start.

When u put the ignition on in a cold weather, the glow plug light must be on at least 5 seconds depending the outside temp, but in your video the glow plug light is off after the check lights of the instrument cluster are off.

  • @awer26 What you see in this film is a cold start, -3 degrees C the engine is not hot. This is the first time start up on this cold morning, I have no control on how long the glow plug light stays lit, I wait for it to go out, then I turn the key. It doesn't stay on very long, in english climate.

  • what tipe of Diesel Fuell you have there?

  • @navistars Just regular diesel - NOT RED and NOT BIO DIESEL in the Sprinter

  • Hows the rebliability on the Sprinters. We have a Vito and ours is crap.

  • @jonny2k100 Can only speak from my own experience, all I can say is "Brilliant"

Maybe you just got a bad-un

  • @Bevoin1970. Maybe we did but we have heard from many people about endless rusting and failed electrics and the curse of the blown turbo which happened to us. It came out of the factory with a fault which has now been done. Well it was done a couple of years ago. But maybe your right we maybe just did get a bad one. But unfortunatrly it sounds like a lot of other people have aswell. Thanks for your reply.

  • haha, it bearly runs...lol

  • Be careful being outside for a long time, you canfreeze to death in this -3C hell!

  • @zaliasvelniass Thanks for the advice, very amusing :-))

  • @zaliasvelniass hehe you should come to Sweden in the winter when we have below -30*c :)

  • @coolakiIlen007 hehe i'm from Norway, I pis in -37C.

  • @zaliasvelniass trodde du var seriös med den andre kommentaren.. :P men nu förstår ja :) jo under -30c är de nästan skönare väder.. :)

  • My Sprinter just wont start in cold weather and the heater is not working. This might sound daft but could the two be connected?

  • @jonjoeamy By the heater not working I assume you mean the heater blower? only reason I ask is mine went too, was a simple fix, new blower cost around £75 and was fitted in 10 mins, common problem too.

Maybe your glow plugs need looking at by someone who knows, just a guess, fuel pump problems, air in fuel system via diesel filter / pipe connections, all possible causes of problems starting.

In answer to your Q I would say NO - Only lack of fuel stops a diesel from working.

  • @Bevoin1970 Hi, my heater is not working either... I suspect the blower motor. Please can you tell me where Ican find /get to it to change it.

  • @alanalton1 See at 1:20 look at the top right hand corner of the video viewing screen - that black sound damping material that you can see, well the heater blower is behind that...

  • @jonjoeamy You guys need to start buying vehicles that are built FOR COLD CLIMATES and vehicles that are built tough and have power under the hood. I'm referring to a FORD ECONOLINE. They are vans, but BUILT AS A TRUCK. I drive an Econoline everyday ( Local Cable TV company ) and NEVER HAVE PROBLEMS starting it even at -20 F outside. Those sprinters ARE A PIECE OF SHIT.

  • @alyr315 hahaha so u comparing an american car with an EUROPEAN car??? u know the quality of a ford its really inferior to an mercedes. Ford is considered the WORST american brand... i bet ur van will be in a yonker 10 years from today.

  • Why heat it 3 times? should start staright away

  • @MrSprintercdi Yes it does - especially when your not holding a camera and trying to show what lights come on, go off etc.

So I wasn't heating it three times as you thought.

All this was purely for the camera and not a normal jump in, turn the key and drive away type of day.

    Thanks for watching :-)

  • i got a mercedes spinter 311 alway get the parts from dealers they very dear, does it matter if i get parts from other dealers such as andwer pages, does it make any differnces

  • @kkhan42 No difference except none dealers will be selling copied parts and not original genuine Mercedes Benz made parts thats all hence the price difference.

Other parts will still do the job, maybe not quite so good or even for as long, but they work.

  • @kkhan42 try european car spares, they do the equivelant parts for all european cars including mercedes benz at a fraction of the original part.

  • That`s great! Thanks you very much! I will follow your advise.sure it will work.

  • Very useful, thx. Do you have any ideea how to reset the service mileage on this Sprinter?

  • @ravenhardrick Yes here goes:

    1- Turn to Ignition 2

    2- Press Miles "Twice" quickly

    3- Turn ignition off

4- Immediately press and hold in "Miles" button

5- Turn ignition back to 2

Should now "Beep" and miles reset to 18000 miles. ( Your miles may be different to mine )

    Job Done :-)

  • We've got a Mercedes Vito. It's a company vehicle. But on a morning it's really loud especially a cold morning. See it has part of the exhaust missing. Well it fell off but the same thing. Anyway it's 5 yrs old but when you start it it's a little bit smokey. But the worse time was when we took it through the wagon wash where my father works. Unfortunately the next morning it wouldn't start. To cut it short. The fuel tank had a crack in it. The water off the wagon wash had got in with the diesel

  • Oooops not good !!! Thanks for watching and hope the Vito gets better soon. :-)

  • Sprinter 313CDI 2005 Started in-16'C without preheating, i was pissed off because the eberspacher hydronic did'nt start that morning as usual..

  • -3° c'est rien, pas besoins de le faire préchauffé 3 fois!!!! meme a -20° sa démarre au quart de tours!!

  • Je sais il etais mon defaut. Merci pour l'observation....

  • idiot! dont step on a gas when the engine is cold!

  • Thank you ! Have a nice day too...

  • kerniuz; he hardly 'stepped on the gas', it was probably not even 3,000RPM (and for like, a second) and the engine had already been running for some time. That's hardly going to damage it. Flooring it to the limiter for half a minute as soon as it started, well that is a different story.

  • I have the same mercedes and i have a problem with starting up the engine when it is cold. I think the problem is with the diesel heaters, how do i take them down? is iti complicated?

  • I have never had to do this, Check that you dont have air bubbles in your fuel pipe, you can see this if you follow the plastic pipe which comes from the top of your diesel fuel filter.

You may have either air being sucked in from one of the pipes on top of the fuel filter , check your pipe connections and rubber O rings, or you have an injector problem maybe..? Take a good look at your plastic fuel pipe on front of the engine while the engine is running. Can you see air bubbles..??

  • What's the point here? -3 is not really cold. I'd expect it to start without problems, nothing else.

  • Each cold start hurts. Him and me. :´-/

  • All Sprinters we have here where i live use to crank long before starting . I think you have a different engine in your van . I heard one today cranking for at least 10 -12 seconds before it started . Typical Sprinters .

  • Not so here in England, all the Sprinters I know start like mine within 2-3 seconds. The only time I have experienced difficulty in starting is when an injector has gone down, or there is air being sucked into the fuel system from somewhere, like the connections on top of the diesel fuel filter.....

  • i work on the current model sprinters and i do find they are poor starters, however the old shape1 like in this vid were better

  • I'd better hang on to mine then by the sounds of things... :-)

I hear my shape is slightly better on fuel as well ?

  • yeah a little the new 311cdi is a 2.8l so when loaded up and doing general van like duties it is a little thirstier the older 5 speed like ur 1 is a good deal faster aswell, the new is really just geared to pull weight at the sacrifice of final drive speed.

  • in Canada, where it gets to -40 in the winter, I have never had a problem starting m y sprinter, the only not so positive thing to say is that the heating system is poorandthat the windows are often fogged up.

  • - 40 sounds very cold, makes - 3 look quite warm :-))) My windows also Fog up in certain weather conditions until the glass has warmed up enough. It is annoying especially when you are in a hurry to drive off.

  • Look at your entries, whether the drainages are clogged and eventually was formed under the plastic a small biotopes.

Have you ever changed your cabin air filter before?

    I've no problems like this.

  • Comment removed

  • actually, I let it warm up for 3 minutes then I go, the problem is not with the truck but with me , I have the bad habit to get into the truck and try to start it right away. One has to insert the key give it a half turn, wait a few seconds and start it. Thank god there is a safety mechanism that makes you wait about four seconds to try to restart the engine

  • Im sometimes like that, just jump in and turn the key... ha ha

When the Sprinter is first switched on and started, it will not rev above 3000 revs per min.

  • That was 1 of the best choices You've made in your life I think! ;-)

  • awesome - air con model too?

  • Nah, I have to wind my window down to get air con.... ha ha

  • Sounds excellent.

Our 1996 Sprinter is at 300k miles now, engine and gearbox still like new. Can't beat a Merc ;)

  • Thanks. It's a good work horse !

  • oh and the build quality on the new 1 has a few little niggles such as the brake calliper slides, the low pressure fuel lines at the tank sender unit are often not attached from factory, the 1 u have is far superior.

  • excelent truck

  • Thanks !

  • in america its called either a frieghtliner sprinter or a dodge sprinter

  • Thanks for the insight, didn't know that.

  • i remember we started the car at minimum -9 outside a winter:P 5min of trying till the car is started. clakclakclakclaklckallll claaaacckkkkk brummmmm like that

  • That sounds like a Tractor to me.......... :-)

  • Mer Sprinter <3

  • how many miles it done??

  • 220,000 plus now

  • theres no need to turn it on and off till it starts..just wait 10-15 seconds for the glowplug sign to switch off then start up

  • If you only turn on the ignition, leave it, then try to continue to turn engine over it wont turn over. You have to turn ignition on and continue turning the key fully all in one go. I didn't do this because of holding the camera etc so what you see is me fumbling around rather than straight starting.

  • So what, you started it cold... nothing special. Cars are built to be started cold, it's not summer all the time.

  • Thankyou, glad you liked it !

  • Me and my dad hired one of these vans once, damn it was powerful :>D

  • Well I filmed it in 16:9 but I still have borders, Why ?? anyone help ??

  • No but i also wants to get rid off them . Good start of the car .Mercedes are reliable cars
