Shirley's pronunciation in Mandarin is even better that of the Chinese man who played San Lo. San Lo spoke flawlessly in English. Most Chinese people at that time spoke Cantonese.

Thank you mandyaan for posting this wonderful movie "Shirley Temple Stowaway part 1. I was disappointed that the male missionary's heart was cold. He would risk little "Barbara" being murdered just like her parents were! He did not have a loving heart because he did not put "Barbara's" best interest before anything else. Shirley Temple was incredible in this movie. You fell in love with her after one second of meeting her. Her sweetness and understanding that you chose happiness is so uplifting!

I don't know if she understands what she's saying and she looks like she's about 5 so I doubt that she does, but, every word an actor says is memorized off of a movie script.

I'm sure this film did very well at the box office in 1936 since people were eager to hear Shirley Temple speak Mandarin, as well as performing imitations of Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, and Ginger Rogers.
