Poenari is a different castle altogether, Bran castle was built by Teutonic knights. Bran castle has been given the hard sell by the Romanian tourist board. It appears that according to different sources, he only spent a few days in Bran's Castle prision, but never really lived there nor was his castle, in fact i'm understanding it was built in the 14th century. What is supposed to be his castle is some contruction now in ruins, called Poenari castle, I guess his tomb with his remains dissapeared in a lake someplace near a monastery. Another mystery to add.

I had heard that there were plans to build a Dracula theme park in Romania like EuroDisney, I hope they at least try and touch on the real Vlad Tepes with this park and don't just devote it to Bram Stoker's literary character.

ok im coming back to say im suprised at all this.how can you sell something like that away,its an intergral part of heritrage and probably the main reason for tourism (sorry romanians i know theres more in romania but others do not).why will the government not buy it,what if they just sold the houses of parliament and big ben one day?of course, no government would let that happen so why the castle? what if they turn it into a hotel? probably a holiday inn written in neon on the side!

ok,i was there at that very castle in 2004,it was much whiter which i thought was a freakin shame,it should have stayed grey stone like before,anyway it looks better now its faded.other thing people need to realise is that that castle, is NOT THE HOME OF DRACULA!it never was,he visited a few times.HIS castle,is a ruined craggy thing up a mountain in south transylvania,at a place called 'Poieniari'.i wish ppl would get it right!anyway GO VISIT,i had one of the best trips ever.blackbox disco!!

Now, this is where I make enemies.......sadly, most of the tourists who buy those geeky dolls they sell will know nothing of the real man. Vlad was infinitely more terrifying in the flesh than Stokers creation. Breathtakingly brave in battle, but a bit of a bastard even by 15th century standards! Was he good for Wallachia? Damn right he was, perhaps the first true Romanian nationlist. You could say he needed to make an omelate, and broke many eggs!

The Castle was not Vlad's original home. Out of the people he had captured, he sent the young and strong out as slaves to work on building his castle while he had the others killed.

True true Tiger dude. I went to Romania, Bram is 30 minutes from Brasov and is a tourist whore trap. I never made it to Poenari or Sighisora but will return. Amazing how a documentary gets the castle's name, the locationa nd history completely fucking wrong. Disgusting.

Sorry, this isn't Dracula's castle and never has been. Dracula stayed here briefly before attacking the Saxon merchants of Brasov. Poenari is a different castle altogether, Bran castle was built by Teutonic knights. Bran castle has been given the hard sell by the Romanian tourist board. Also, Vlad rarely used metal poles to impale people, he had to use wood as he impaled so many people!.........This brings me to my point....Beware estate agents!

I have reviewed one reputable source that stated Vlad and his retainers commandiered Bran for 1-2 days before assaulting Brasov to ''deal'' with the Saxons after they refused his trade negotiations. I cannot comment at this time whether or not the Transylvanian Saxons took refuge at Bran and tried to mount a defence. It was not his seat of power of regular home in any event.

I hope they will keep it open for visitors, it is such a romantic castle, tiny and at a great location. And I think the village would miss the revenues from the tourists having a break and meal on the way there.
If you go there for the first time to visit (you really should!), plan a full day as on the way up to the castle you will find a display of history and an open air museum well worth hours of examination.
It is not far from Bucharest.

Back in those times it was necessary to be a little (or a little bit too much) of a killer to survive the violence wave and anarchy of the constant changes and wars amongst nations. Dracula was a cruel person but that is justified as his territorry was in constant danger coming from the west and the east. Hungarians and turks were the big menace to his minions. Search for a similar character, Ivan the Terrible....he's more or less the russian Dracula because he was that cruel.

Guys, I don´t know who is the fool to believe such a thing but it does´t surprise me anything at the moment...look...Dracula is a historical character who lived in 15 century, and the novel was written in 19 century with important mistakes in the documentation, this smartass in this video doesn´t even know that the castle was built in 14 century(1377-1382), doesn´t know that Poienari Castle was a different castle, and never lived in Transilvania

Poenari Castle is Vlad Tepes the 3rd's Castle, not Bran Castle. I wouldn't want to buy Bran Castle, I would however like to own Poenari castle (even it it is just ruins.)

And yes, Poenari was Vlad`s castle, but the Bran castle(the one shown here)in which Queen Mary lived is just the castle where Stoker placed Dracula, but actually nobody can assure you that Vlad even spent 1 night there, as he was the ruler of Wallachia, not of Transilvania as much think...

Wallachian princes have for long held possession of areas north of the this line (Amlaş, Ciceu, Făgăraş, and Haţeg), which are generally not considered part of Wallachia-proper.

Beautiful castle!Vlad Tepes wasn't the monster of all of those horror stories....as he was a strong christian orthodox fighting against his enemies to protect his country...he fought mostly against the turks...as they were a big menace for Christian Europe back those times. I understand he used to have an emblem of a dragon in his chest as a war talisman, giving him the name Dracul...resulting in a deformation of his nickname in Dracula...but he wasn't a vampire as in mith....

Yes!thanks for sharing... I did read a little more about Vlad and his place in real history. It appears that according to different sources, he only spent a few days in Bran's Castle prision, but never really lived there nor was his castle, in fact i'm understanding it was built in the 14th century. What is supposed to be his castle is some contruction now in ruins, called Poenari castle, I guess his tomb with his remains dissapeared in a lake someplace near a monastery. Another mystery to add.

Hi!I am from romania and we learn about vlad tepes in history classes.He actually was a good leader and his people loved him.He used to kill only criminals and thieves (or any other enemys) by pulling them into spikes.But all these were for his people's sake.I really admire him,but i do think he might have been a little too cruel.P.S. Actually,the citizens called his father Vlad Dracul(meaning devil),because he had a dragon-like talisman on his chest(but he also was loved by his people).;)

he was called dracula because of a nickname he earned at one point when he and his army was warring against their enemy. he was nicknamed Dracul; in which is tranlated into Dragon. so Dracula came from Vlad's nickname. Vlad also had a tendency to impale his own citizens for not paying taxes.
