@Shinobi1126 OUCH!!!, yeah you win. I think there is no question any ninja could pick up anything and use it as a weapon. I know this is not classical ninjutsu, or anything., this is YOUTUBE ha ha.
My wooden tonfas never last, the handles always come loose, so i bought a pair of fibre glass police tonfas which last. But i still have a go with oak tonfa. I've bought so many pairs of tonfa it's rediculous
Some interesting moves but my advice would be to unlock your footwork some more - make it lighter not anchored because you have some fast kicks when you go for it. If we have a match and I have a stick or sword you'd be as good as drunk. though ;-) keep posting - nice hand work.
great video. I have been wanting to get a set of tonfas so I can try and learn them...err well try to learn any martial art really. thanks for sharing. Also weird question but what is the dummy made of and how did you make it?
Quit insulting the guy. Personally, I know next to nothing about martial arts beyond common sense and a few self defense moves taught to me by a member of the national guard as a demonstration. To those of you who didn't insult him, thank you for doing something productive (Or, at the very least, not unproductive.)
I wish I could say more, but I can only make this comment so long. Keep at it, (advice you probably don't need), and thanks for posting. I've been interested in tonfa for a while.
@ShinobiMystic I personally came to think tonfa is the most apropiate weapon for melee defense even if you don't have much of training, it's kinda having your hands reinforced ....
Love your videos, man! I have a question though if you don't mind, what's the length of your tonfa, and do you know where to purchase some real tonfa ( I only have the training tonfa and they've broke after a couple of years)? Any help would be highly appreciated!.
Neat video- looks like a pretty fun training area too. Two questions: One, what's the song playing? I really like it. Second, I noticed at 1:47 when you went for that front kick, you dropped your hands a bit wide and low. I'm not too familiar with tonfa- looking to get into them in the future- so is this a defensive move versus weapons? I'm only asking because I used to do that when sparring unarmed and I'd get my head boxed, haha.
@muaythaikindaguy the song is shinobi by Dream Dance Alliance, and I guess I dropped my gaurd as a block for a low block. My other hand should be higher ready to protect.
its cool n all but ur one sided dude if i was to fight u i would take out ur right side first and for gabrienne86 tonfa r chinese japs jus took the idea
I have never used the Tonfa... It was never introduced in my TKD training... I guess that is a weapon with too strong of a Japanese affiliation to be taught in a Korean style. However I do admire how your arms become like armor when holding them... forgive me for sounding like a nerd but it's almost as if you were punching somebody witha Gundam fist!... Yeah I said gundam...you got a problem you haters?!
No way dude, yeah these are awesome defensive and offensive weapons. You can block almost anything, while dish it out with these strong block of wood. Mine is oak wood and the handle is getting loose. I have seen the ones police use are like super resin will never shatter or break.
Not that it's not interesting, however, techniques are done on both sides... and those warm ups can also be used as slashes, so personally I would not leave my arm so close to the body while performing those slashes ;)
Yep. exactly what I meant. The weapon that is attacking should always travel to it's full potential, even two more inches can make a big difference in a fight. Not to mention that it will help you to do more stronger and powerful slashes with tonfa ;)
shinobi san you should show how the tonfa is used to strangle your opponents from behind or as the shove attack with body weight concentrated in one point holding the tonfa both hands gives a bigger sneak up and dispose possibilety for a shinobi such as you are^^
i have no doubts in your capabilety to show that^^
dude awesome video ... i am about to get my tonfa ... and later another one hehehe... and i would do my besto to train as hard as you ... btw can you tell me the song's name plz is cool :P
I've been using the tonfa as my primary weapon for ten years now, and I have to say great video. And for those who are interested in it, its an amazing weapon. The best way to learn is of course off an instructor, simply because books and videos can't correct your errors. If you really want to learn from a book tho look up Fumio Demura, his books helped me. Well keep up the good work man, and hope the advice helps people wanting to learn.
Thanks so much bro. Yeah I love the tonfa and still work to refine my technique. Thanks for the source and I do hope it helps. Thank you so much for watching friend.
my primary weapon'sy fist but when your up against multiple people (more than 3 "big guys" i'd say) you need alternatives, batons are great alternatives, as they are blunt instruments of pain that can kill but you use them because you wont kill with them. If the world turned to anarchy my primary weapon would probally be an m9 bayonet and then a baton (probally the extendable baton). I love watching tonfa vids, some of these guys can move them pretty fast!
honestly, I noticed the discaimer, however I am currently unable to get instruction at the moment and I do want to learn how to use these things. any tips? safer beginner techniques and routines? please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
i have to disagree, think of the range of the weapons vs the range of a normal persons arms. to be up front, who ever was fighting unarmed against the person with the tonfas, would just get messed up. im pretty sure that any hits that connect to the head with the tonfa would be a one hit ko.

well i gotta give props to you for creating helpfull vids, really shows, the people who talk shitzer and the people like you who do something for martial artists.
tonfa should be made legal to use in streets lol..
Hi, I see that you are familiarized with the tonfa and nice moves by the way.
Could you please tell me what is the best style of tonfa to use or do you know some good website about tonfas? I already searched a lot and found little information about the different tonfa styles and what are they more suitable for...one more question, what is the average weigth of a tonfa?
If you look to the right in the related video list, the videos by Hempev have been really helpful in my training. I like the traditional okinawan karate forms for the Tonfa. I think you should choose a style that best fits your body style and dynamics.
Avergae weight, depends on what it is made out of, wood, metal?
I asked my father, who is very skilled in building the finest things out of a bare piece of wood, to make me a wooden tonfa. I showed him several images of tonfa and he made a prototype out of pine wood.
I wanted to know the average weight of a tonfa, so that when my father makes the definitive pair of tonfas i will be using, he makes them with the correct weigth, not too heavy, making them hard to maneuver and not too light, making them lack in strength
Tonfa are incredible weapons. I love how they are so effective at defending but in an instant can extend and reach far beyond to deliver lightning fast strikes and devastating thrusts. I can't wait to begin training with these. Well done Shinobimystic!
flailing/ swinging strikes and traditional hand position strikes dominate your techique. There is much to be shown holding the Tonfa in other grips- using the handle to strike, hook or pin your attacker. Grip changes are essential to master with tonfa use.
umm wouldent it be fun to show how to disarm someone using a tonfa against you or how to use it against other weapons? just a thought keep up the good work^^
i prefer the bo, i think its easier to handle, and it has a bigger distance, but i think all martial arts weapons have their own plus and minus, so your training vid looks pro to me^^
Check out my bojutusu and bo staff video's friend. I have quite a few. Thanks for watching this stuff though. I love training in martial arts weapons.
I have been working with Tonfa for a little over a year and change and the thing to remember is that it's a "brawler's" weapon. Efficient brutality over finesse. Grab, dislocate, block, and disable, are just a few things you can do with it. The Police use what is called the PR24, or Nightstick, though anymore they use a straight baton that extends or is spring loaded.
i love the tonfa, and always considered them to be a very 'pure' weapon; almost an extension of your body (unlike weapons such as the flail or nunchaku, which have an element of uncertainty and a moment without control whenever you strike something).
it sounds strange, but i think someone can get really good with nunchaku, but one can really 'know' the tonfa. there's a subtle difference between solid weapons (such as swords) and ones with chains or segmented parts.
Thanks for watching. I see what you mean about the weapon being solid and more able to be "known" I can use the Bo staff well but I cannot use the 3 section staff.
cool vid cool moves but your going to either have to train against a real person or put arms on it
you will understand why fast moving arms without strength can still block any and all attacks if you'd watch a couple of my vid( thought aimless they may be at the moment)
I actually just purchased some tonfa to practice with. This helps me out alot. Is it possible for you to post more tonfa instruction? Is it possible to post some tonfa instruction with audio instruction?
I see on your dummy that there is a lot of give and the tonfa just passes by it, what happens when you go up against something hard and it bounces back? Do you think a heavy bag is good for tonfa practice?
I would like to see one on your day to day training whether a description or whatever, I read Stephen Hayes book and always wondered how long most people train. subbed
Tonfas are a fun weapon to practice, and they are also very practical for self defense (police officers around the world still carry variations of the tonfa to this day, for example) Good video.
To be honest i haven't been watching your videos for quite a while. I have to really commend you though, your form and techmique have noticably improved. I'm impressed brother
great vid if at all possible could you do a few more tonfa vids eventually i'm going to achive a hihg enough rank in my Tora-Ryu Bujitsu studies to where I'm allowed to choose my 4th weapon (between the nunchaku and tonfa) I've already decided to go with the tonfa and would like some early experience with it. Arigato Ggozaimasu!!!
very cool to see this vid. i thought all of us and i gave dan in case hi is in the intro and forbidden clay and i said we all use nintai intro after title then our own so we all have same beginning then our own. are you cool with that mike. nintai then our intro. also is it so muddy you have to wear boots still instead of tabi. very wet here and snowing all night and right now. my yard and town are covered in a fresh blanket of snow. and so cold. cool aplications with dummy. 5 stars
Yeah I'll start using the nintai then my own logo/into thing. Yea I've been wearing my tabi more. But I think it was supposed to rain the day I filmed this.

Thanks for your kind words, I know I got more muscle weight. I really love the song in this video it is called Shinobi my Dream Dance Alliance.
I like teaching with no or little words because youtube is world thing and not everyone speaks english and I figured this speaks to them more.
Do you ever get emails in another language I do sometimes.

Thanks, I love the tonfa's but haven't made a video about it till now.

Tonfas are a fun weapon to practice, and they are also very practical for self defense (police officers around the world still carry variations of the tonfa to this day, for example) Good video.

very cool to see this vid. i thought all of us and i gave dan in case hi is in the intro and forbidden clay and i said we all use nintai intro after title then our own so we all have same beginning then our own. are you cool with that mike. nintai then our intro. also is it so muddy you have to wear boots still instead of tabi. very wet here and snowing all night and right now. my yard and town are covered in a fresh blanket of snow. and so cold. cool aplications with dummy. 5 stars
