That "leslie effect" is "Flanging. I used to play like this in the 70's. For me, this is not a pleasing sound. However, If I listen to the music only - it is good. Akkerman and Paco are brilliant musicians - and unless you try something, you don't know if it will work. Akkerman is a good acoustic player and I would have liked to have heard on acoustics only. Leslie's were famous on keyboards (Organs) - think I'll try my flanger again.
Akkerman is humble enough, De Lucia graceful enough, so something special happens. Instrumental poetry, musical storytelling, an unstoppable flow of inspired ideas.
I think Jan Akkerman is really a very good guitarist. Listen, for example, to his playing 'Hocus Pocus' with the band 'Focus'. As for Paco de Lucia, for me he is beyond any comparison: he is simply the best of all! Suprisingly, however, neither Paco, nor Jan were included in the list of the 100 best guitarists of all time. It's very strange.
@philgrey0207 are you referring to the bogus Rolling Stone Mag list ? As it was total bullshit ! No classicals, no flamenco only one real jazzer (McLauglin) altogether a joke . @illuminOz Thank you for your reference. Have you ever heard (or heard of) the young Russian guitarist Anna Likhacheva? If not, you may find some of her videos here on Youtube. She is only 18 but I'm sure she plays better than most of those listed in the Rolling Stone Mag. She plays the classical guitar. The Croatian Ana Vidovic is also quite good.
@philgrey0207 I've not heard of either but I like ALL guitar music so I will check them out, thanks :) I did come across this Russian guy who was a total freak of nature with the unbelivable sweep picking arpeggios he was playing, can't remember his name but from memory he played fusion so I will have a look for you so you can check him out :)
@illuminOz I'd never even heard Arkady's name before you sent me your post. Now that I've seen and listened to some of his clips I agree that his technique is superb and he's worthy of being included in some top of the world lists. Thank you for sharing the information. As for Anna Likhacheva, on the youtube there are clips of her playing the guitar starting with the age of four and up to seventeen. Now she is quite a beautiful girl, not only a very good guitarist.
@illuminOz P.S. I don't give you any concrete references because it's easy to find her: just 'Anna Likhacheva youtube' in Google or any other search engine - and there she is.
Then they should have played something more Akkerman-ish. Paco gets to hang out in his own element here... it's Akkerman who is in strange territory. So of course Pace comes off well. Would've been nice to see them go on a funk fusion number afterwards.
Muy interesante esta mezcla de estilos. Desconocía que mi guitarrista favorita (Akkerman) había tocado con el maestro Lucía. Muy interesante el sonido que consiguen
Kudos for posting this amazing clip. Most of today's musicians don't compare, they wouldn't have the guts to get together in this manner & jam. Today it's all about looks & image. As to who blew who away, it's irrelevant. Once you get beyond a certain ability, it's just a matter of personal style. Both of them are amazing guitarists.
The fact that this video was posted 4 years ago & it is still generating comments says it all.
I really enjoyed this piece. Never seen it before. With reference to certain negative comments on it, I would bring your attention to a Branford Marsalis quote, where he says that music can "transcend life through its honesty."
Wow, Jan was pretty courageous to use the electric with some phasing. Right when it started and showed the close up on Paco, I instantly thought "PLEASE let Jan be using his LP, please don't be playing acoustically just because of Paco", and BOOM. This video is a dream come true. It's so authentic, it's like they both were in studios that day with their own respectful acts and then the phone rang to meet at such and such for a jam (of course it was planned) - but still, so unexpected. Amazing.
Of course, two giants in guitar playing, but personally I find that the sounds of the two guitars do not match! On one hand you have the nylon acoustic of Paco, which (to me anyway) forms the base of this piece and Jan comes in with an over flangered harsh electric sound. Nothing wrong with it individually, but it just don't seem to match!
There appear to be a lot of negative comments here and I cannot for the life of me understand why. As a working musician myself, what I see here are two excellent guitarists, albeit of differing styles (yes, I remember Focus in the early Seventies) getting together and playing for the sheer Hell of playing. The end result is amazing. It is not a boys pissing up the wall contest, it is two genuinely talented men having fun onstage. Take it as that and be happy it happened.
I see it as paco in awe of Jan, him peering over once in a while to see his lighting fast solos.Do not forget Jan was improvising, in my opinion to a more flamenco style of music familiar to paco anyway.
These two are (with Jeff beck) among the greatest living guitarists. I have seen all three live, and they are in a class by themselves. Although this is no polished studio set, it is perfect for that reason as well as the imagination and virtuosity on display. I love it!
For all the people complaining... I at first was thrown off by Akkerman's playing (I'm a fan of both players in this clip) but I think most of the trouble is the mix to honest, Akkerman's guitar is mixed too loud and the effect was slightly jarring. Apart from that it's an interesting combination of sounds and players... and Jan was in awe of Paco, he was hardly disrespecting his my his choice of guitar or effect...
Of all the comments posted on this thread, yours is probably the stupidest.
For a start, this is in the early/mid 70's and the leslie effect was pretty avantguarde back then. Read the other comments and the YT interview with Jan that accompanies this video. He is so respectful of Paco and refers to him playing like a 'Jet Plane' with better fingers than any pickpocket
Also, you seem to miss the fact that the whole point of this jam was to do something different.
Not only for his modest, humble and friendly attitude he should be praised. But surely we can see the passion and dedication Jan Akkerman puts into this work that is by origigin Flamenco. I am a dedicated fan of Paco de Lucia, but I start to like Jan Akkerman more and more!
Let´s just say these are the two best guitarists at what they do. Just because you don´t like either style doesn´t mean they are worse guitarists. Just because I don´t llike flamenco style but creative electrical guitar doesn´t mean Paco is bad guitarist. I just think Jan and Jimi are the most diverse and experimental guitar player of all (even Page).
What a hell Jan was doing there...I guess he took a beaten.;by Paco... but actually he did some good solos....But the guy who does the solo using the fingers not a pick can do so much more, can mix solos with chords etc...Look how stronger and clear Paco's note sound. It's kinda like santana jaming with John McClaughlin,.But in the end didn't sound bada to me... not at all.
I admire De lucia as a soloist, the way he pull the strings to get that sound, that finger technique,BUT,as a complete violonist a stay with JOHN WILLIANS,we just need to hear de lucia and willians playing the concert from ARANJUEZ
It would have been so easy for Jan to pick up an acoustic and for them to have learnt and played some pre-agreed piece of music. But they didnt and thats what makes this clip so great. Its so obviously not, pre-planned or organised. Just 2 guys from different backgrounds showing thier skills and banging out a tune together.
I'll tell you something else - It takes some balls to take the 'Black Beauty' and the leslie effects and play flamenco alongside the great one
@Epifonema After some times listening i though it fit well...akkerman does not know what he is doing as lucia does know...that is why he can not hold the base in the guitar when lucia is soloing, but his feeling as a soloist left a good remembering in de Lucia´s mind,i am sure,he did well,he did well...i understood after sometimes
I see it this way; at first there was two isolated islands. Then the both of them had the guts to bridging the gab. And notice that guitar synthesizers were spectacular at that time. Flashing it back into the now it sounds horrible indeed. And Paco; please explain your expression on 2:40
OK, a strange mix no doubt, but I think it sounds great..why all the bad vibes...real talent on both parts...actually it's amazing these disparate styles and disiplines merge so well.
Paco might be the best flamenco guitarist of all time. Jan is way more versatile. I even wouldn't find it strange if Paco felt a bit ashamed at this meeting for not being able to play along with Jan, butting letting Jan do that all the time. What if Jan would go and play his own stuff? Paco wouldn't know how to improvise along with that. Think about that.
@killercrabman no, that is not how flamenco works. I can also play scales along with music but that's not improvising. Try finding ANY video of paco improvising. Even playing in another style. You will not succeed cause there are none. You will always hear him play stuff you already know.
@DrStench13 dear Dr paco try to improvise all his life but flamenco is always in his head and in his blood and any time when he tries to improvise it's sounds like flamenco but IT IS IMPROVISATION......he said that.....so there is no reasons to argue anymore about that......
i only had this song on tape way back in the seventies from a program by the TROS called Steenbok (a story about Jan Akkerman). and now so many years later it's on viedeo!! Jan is playing on a solid state LAB series amp L9. I must admit Jan 's been blown away by Paco, but also Jan admits he had been run over by an aeroplane!!!!
akkerman se equivoca de largo eligiendo un efecto tan espeso. no se distingue practicamente ni una nota. al contrario que paco con su pureza habitual. en definitiva, una fusion un tanto extraña.
To prove my point I first knew about Paco de lucia from Di meolas LP Elegant Gypsy, before that I had never heard of him. After I began to listen to him in his own right, so Paco your plan worked but only through a Jazz guitarist. I am not knocking him BTW Music is a business.
For me this is what good music is about. Two skilled players feeling eachothers soul and trying to communicate in different languages. But they definitly share this universal language called music.
To all the critics; if you don'nt feel what's happening here you have to listen better or you donn't understand enough what music is about.
I'm shure Paco or Jan donn't give a damn about showing off on eachother.
If this was the case something like this would never be created.
@torro2009 I'm so glad that amongst the nonsense spoken here, your comments show great musical taste and openness. I have greatly enjoyed this and found Akkerman's contribution beautiful. It goes without saying that de Lucia's is also.
Two top notch guitarists in their respective fields. De Lucia is one of the premiere commercial flamenco guitarists; Akkerman is one of the premiere rock guitarists. De Lucia was a master in his style, though, whereas Akkerman was a jack of all trades, and demonstrated more depth of playing. I'd like to see these guys team up with Steve Morse.
-Akkerman is obviously a hell of a musician performing in a background in which he didn't feel comfortable enough. But I wouldn't be as harsh on him as he seems to be.
- Paco de Lucia did actually start playing out of his style when he chose to tour with Corryell and McLaughlin in the early 70s.
- To say that Corryell, Di Meola or McLaughlin played flamenco whereas Paco didn't have to change his comfort area to get closer to those players is plain wrong.
De Lucia isn't seeking any kind of interaction with Jan Akkerman i.e. de Lucia plays rather egocentric for himself whereas Akkerman is gently supporting de Lucia. Akkerman acknowleged in Dutch that he just supported de Lucia.
For those that comment on akkerman here saying he is no good or mundane or whatever ask yourself this question, Have you ever seen Paco play out of his style with anyone else?...NO.. but many guitarists have played out of their fleld with him. So do not knock Akkerman or anyone else.
@totopovic Of course he is and was BUT have you ever seen Paco jamming with anyone else outside his own field but he wanted other players to jam along with him thats my point, did you ever see him with a gibson or fender...no. Demeola and Coryell etc had to play flamenci but he never ofered the other way did he? AND He was smart! why should he. But someone like Jan here bit the bullet and had a go..
Jan is an accomplished acoustic/classical guitarist and lute player. It would have been real easy to put these 2 together acoustically, but this is much more interesting.
Paco is playing songs he already knew and its Jan taking all the risks. (I couldnt see Paco playing along to Hocus Pocus)
No-ones criticising Paco, but this is in his comfort zone.
Well we dont really know that. His technique and skill are without question, but he has never really stepped far from his comfort zone. Search on Jan's history even on YT and you will see classical playing on Acoustic and Lute, straight up blues, supporting Jazz singers, playing Gypsy with the Rosenbergs, ground breaking prog-rock with Focus. He went through a serious Funk phase and pioneered work on the Guitar Synth - his musical versatility is almost unmatched
@hulldanfan I think Paco wanted a larger audience and to do this he had to be seen with the popular rock / Jazz players of the day, so thats why Jan is here. How about Jan playing acoustic and Paco on Gibson? that might have been good? but Paco was quite clever to stick to his known territory. PLUS we do not know how much was paid to these Jazz guitarists to play with him. Its a business not just about music. Anyway it worked and Paco seemed to gain from these exploits.

DrStench13 1 year ago
@DrStench13 OFCOURSE HE COULD,THE BLUES SCALE IS LIKE DRINKING WATER AND PACO IS A FRIKIN BASKING SHARK.think about that.
killercrabman 1 year ago
@killercrabman no, that is not how flamenco works. I can also play scales along with music but that's not improvising. Try finding ANY video of paco improvising. Even playing in another style. You will not succeed cause there are none. You will always hear him play stuff you already know.
DrStench13 1 year ago
@DrStench13 watch?v=FlAyEN07JjI if this is not improvising...i dont know what is.
hideare 1 year ago

WELLBRAN 1 year ago
For me this is what good music is about. Two skilled players feeling eachothers soul and trying to communicate in different languages. But they definitly share this universal language called music.
To all the critics; if you don'nt feel what's happening here you have to listen better or you donn't understand enough what music is about.
I'm shure Paco or Jan donn't give a damn about showing off on eachother.
If this was the case something like this would never be created.
torro2009 1 year ago 2
@torro2009 I'm so glad that amongst the nonsense spoken here, your comments show great musical taste and openness. I have greatly enjoyed this and found Akkerman's contribution beautiful. It goes without saying that de Lucia's is also.
Best wishes, Kevin Morris

Two top notch guitarists in their respective fields. De Lucia is one of the premiere commercial flamenco guitarists; Akkerman is one of the premiere rock guitarists. De Lucia was a master in his style, though, whereas Akkerman was a jack of all trades, and demonstrated more depth of playing. I'd like to see these guys team up with Steve Morse.

The universal language of music: Jan Akkerman Netherlands, Paco de Lucia Andaluz, and they merged the language of his guitars to achieve this marvel.

culillo1882 1 year ago
Just a few of points on this.

WELLBRAN 1 year ago 25
@WELLBRAN hahahaha paco only playing his style .... what a joke !
paco is the god of guitar
totopovic 1 year ago
@totopovic Of course he is and was BUT have you ever seen Paco jamming with anyone else outside his own field but he wanted other players to jam along with him thats my point, did you ever see him with a gibson or fender...no. Demeola and Coryell etc had to play flamenci but he never ofered the other way did he? AND He was smart! why should he. But someone like Jan here bit the bullet and had a go..
WELLBRAN 1 year ago 2
@WELLBRAN
Spot on m8
Jan is an accomplished acoustic/classical guitarist and lute player. It would have been real easy to put these 2 together acoustically, but this is much more interesting.
Paco is playing songs he already knew and its Jan taking all the risks. (I couldnt see Paco playing along to Hocus Pocus)
No-ones criticising Paco, but this is in his comfort zone.
hulldanfan 1 year ago
@hulldanfan but on the other hand, paco feels comfortable anywhere :-)
mikulasvselicha 1 year ago
@mikulasvselicha
He went through a serious Funk phase and pioneered work on the Guitar Synth - his musical versatility is almost unmatched
hulldanfan 1 year ago 15
@hulldanfan I think Paco wanted a larger audience and to do this he had to be seen with the popular rock / Jazz players of the day, so thats why Jan is here. How about Jan playing acoustic and Paco on Gibson? that might have been good? but Paco was quite clever to stick to his known territory. PLUS we do not know how much was paid to these Jazz guitarists to play with him. Its a business not just about music. Anyway it worked and Paco seemed to gain from these exploits.
