They were making a lot of noise about warnings giving us time to turn off satellites from the solar storms, but light (admittedly not CMEs) from the Sun only takes 8 minutes to get here (crossing 93 million miles). In other words, their warning system would have to be very sensitive and very fast in order to be effective. On the plus side, astronomers studying the Sun already have a general idea when activity is increasing with our present observation equipment.

It provides an electromagnetic shield of sorts that deflects most of the radiation. Satellites are most at risk because they are outside our atmosphere. Damage can be done on the ground, but nothing like what would happen without our present "shield." Think Mars. It lost its electromagnetic field, and the rays stripped it dry.
Another segment showed and explained how this solar storm will cause 20x the damage of Katrina and cost over 2 trillion dollars in damage. Electric grids will be out, ect. And could be out for a few years! This means no transactions with Credit cards and all electrical equipment fried. Everything down.
With all of these warning happening in the world i am thinking that 2012 is real and our government is preparing to save themselves a screw everybody else.

Space scientist, David Sereda discussed his latest research on how Solar Flare, CME, and sunspot activity is affecting the Earth. Based on his observance of solar activity, he said he's been able to predict various earthquakes. I recently followed CME activity on Spaceweatherdotcom and we usually have earthquakes and volcanic activity soon after it hits earth.

We've seen less radiation coming towards earth from the sun.
Less radiation leaving from earth out into space.
But more radiation coming from the atmosphere down to the surface.
