  • For me, this is the best ''Giant Steps''of all times... Impressive.

  • Hey guys I found an amazing band from NYC... look for AfroMantra Azul Infinito, it's from a Chilean Cuban drummer and the band is simply smoking!

  • 2:22 - Brecker likes it!

  • it's amaizing!!!!!!!!

  • *disliked

  • whoever the diliked this is a cocksucker

  • Astounding technique, meaningless notes.

  • its impressive but i get no feeling from it. no emotion for me. it seems like he thinks playing this way is enough, pianist like oscar peterson, hiromi uehara, art tatum, mccoy tyner, they can play fast but also be very meaningful

  • @MCalixte89 Dude, what are you talking about is the most bullshit - this is what we see and hear here is a heroic act...

  • @valter8530 if you want to hear real avant garde jazz piano, listen to Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus, Vijay Iyer, early Keith Jarrett, Andrew Hill, Hiromi Uehara, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, man also check out John Coltrane in the 60's, late Miles Davis, Phaorah Sanders, who ever that dude was that played sax with Coltrane in the 60, " duck" something. Man thats Avant Garde buddy. I love Gonzalo, I just dont like when he tries to explore avant garde because it doesnt sit well with me

  • Increíble! Y qué joven Rubalcaba...

  • This is just so amazing, it's GOD. His rhythmical sensitivity is unbelievable!

  • i felt like quiting piano after hearing this..... amazing!!!!

  • i cant listen to the entire thing. Its too awful. People find this noise pleasureable? Really? I get "the emperors new clothes" vibe here. Its the technical skill that is supposed to be impressive, right?

  • @brutalgeneric No, not at all buddy, it's that these notes are acquired tastes. These harmonies require a lot of experience to be enjoyed. Nothing played here is in any way illogical.

  • @HamerD is just cientifically the hardest or harder than comon playing

  • J_E_S_U_S_C_H_R_I_S_T

  • "Smack" --- the sound of my jaw hitting the floor.

  • How many bands can play this much on-top of the beat (starting around 3:10 and on) ? They're driving it straight ahead and beyond - perhaps within the cuban tradition of playing Palánte.

I'd venture to say not many take the risks.

Julio Barreto on drums - come on! It doesn't get much better (and this is 1992!).

  • @TiqueO6 Sorry, that's OT but i wonder how you managed to make the video start at "3:10" and post it here ? Can you point me to a FAQ point where this is explained? Thanx in advance.

  • @FroguetteMiNote

it's very easy; just type the time into your comment using the typical punctuation. In this case it's the " : " or "colon" mark which separates the numbers as follows; minute:second or 3:10.

  • @TiqueO6 Sorry for not reacting before, YT failed to warn me about your answer. Many thanks for this tip! I'll try it now: 3:10

  • Chopin Lizt Mozart Bach all togheter. Rubalcaba o Gênio numca acaba...renova reaparece...

  • Comments about "sounding robotic" & "not being able to play the changes" are simply hilarious.

  • el no es humano...

  • makes me think of prokofiev. this is not jazz. this is something else. the question is can he play the changes. It seems that his harmonic memory so strong and uniquely adapted to his style that he is unable to pull away from the gravity of it. This seems to prevent him from being able to play the heart of the chords. The music sounds robotic. Even there body language speaks robotic.

This must be a result of playing electronic keyboards, as the sound is not rooted in organic wood/metal

  • @K43TOC

haha dont worry they can play the changes this is just how they did it this time

  • @K43TOC Robotic?? You´re kidding, right? I´m a harmonica player and I don´t need to play piano or keyboard to see that this guy just BREATH MUSIC with every single hole in his skin! Regards from Brazil my friend!

  • @K43TOC

don't base your opinion on this one recording...he's got plenty more out there that will convince you otherwise.

This one obviously cuts in at an intense moment. What happened before and after this?

I've seen him/them play changes for days, dynamics like getting softer and more intense as the night goes along.

Tone production on the piano in an intimate setting which had my piano PHD friend in tears!

  • @K43TOC Maybe you think G.R. goes to far. That is a matter of taste. As to his approach being informed by playing electric instuments I cannot disagree more. Without intimate feel for the mechanics of the piano technique of this quality would be impossible. Most of that tremelo stuff does not come off on electronic keyboards. You say he is robotic, but I say he is very precise and has intimate connection with the mechanics of his instrument.
