@skitt1z1 if you have 2-(-2) that means you have two minus's beside each other which automatically turns into addition so basically it'll be 2 + 2 which equal 4
I dont understand how 2 - (-2) can be 4. How can takeing property away from the initial 2 make it become a larger number? it does not make any logical sence to me :S any help?
I learned an awesome model today at an interview, of all places. The "as compared to" model for subtraction. Take "7 - 2". This can be read as "7 as compared to 2", which leads to an answer of "they are comparably 5 apart".
It also works for subtracting negatives! "7 - -2" can be read as "7 as compared to -2", which leads to an answer of 9 since 7 and -2 are comparably 9 spaces apart!
:D Thanks so much... I was doin my homework and i dn't get it and i was mad then my mom showed me this and i watched it like 4 times! :D i kinda understand it! And u sound like u our from sweden or finland i can talk some of it! :D Mitah Kuuluu! or something like that my OLD friends mom is from there and they taught me lots! U sound alot like her mom with accent!
@tutoringecon No, it was some other store. But chances are the boards could have both been made in China... can't check mine now, it's screwed to the wall.
I created a tool to help kids with this very concept. It's a hard one, even for top achievers. My professors tell me that calculus students get caught up in the algebra, and I think the same is true for algebra students and arithmetic (negatives!)
Thank you so much for contributing to free knowledge! You're a star!

I made a colorful animation-style video on how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. I hope you give it a whirlio! (It's on my page)
