Clokey was obviously a very innovative guy. It's a pity that his work gradually became safer, more mainstream and more kid-oriented (the first Gumby episode, "Moon Trip," was pretty intense), culminating in the sweet but insipid "Davey and Goliath." I reckon Jim Henson's work went through a similar devolution: his early work on Ed Sullivan was strange and surreal; his later stuff was aimed at kids, although adults could tolerate it.

That such talents are herded towards kidservice is a shame.
