Fist of all get the drivers for you network card of your comptuer google it. Then open cmd and type without quotes "netsh winsock reset" restart your comptuer. Then go into IE options google it. Go to connections tab and click on Lan settings at the bottom. The only thing that should be checked marked is the Automatically detect internet settings. close ie and bring it back up you should now be on the net. This works well on xp, vista and windows 7... this method only makes a staic ip.

in order to get your own ip address and gateway info etc...don't you need your internet connection to work first?

if your connection doesn't work then you can't "fix" it with your method.

Thanks man. But i wasnt sure if it was neccessary to have the default gateway or the dns adress. Because mine wouldnt show up in "run" then my internet still wouldnt work eventhough it seemed like it for a second. Everything else worked out great though.

It is really defends what kind of internet problem you have. Most of router problem if you are using wireless what best to do is just turn off the router for ten seconds. that actually resets the system. After that you can log to the site of your router and configure the connection there by logging in your account and providing your password. that solves the problem in most cases.

the folder he showed her helped me fix what was wrong with my ethernet connection on my computer. i had to change the settings in the local area connections. the internet protocall (spelling?).. i actually had to change it to obtain an ip automatically for it to work. and it did! i am so glad. somehow it was set to its own ip that wasnt working for my computer.. the new one worked.
