how do news station get away with reporting allegations and making it look like facts? notice the words the reporters uses. "according to"..... "he claims"....etc.
WHY THE FUCK WOULDNT YOU SHIFT IT INTO NEUTRAL? these people who claim their gas pedals stick are simply retarded...they're probably awful drivers and just like most poeple, they cannot accept the blame and have to put it elsewhere...blaming an inanimate object is the easiest way to go
My mother owns a Prius. Trust me, the engine doesn't have enough power to override the brakes. The driver was not "standing on the brakes" as he says.
Try this one on for size - He was going to commit suicide to pay off his debts but backed out when the cop showed up. He didn't bring anyone with him, he has a mountain of debt, he gets his details on how to do it from the Saylor Lexus news, doesn't count on a quick response from the cops and now he has a very credible witness following along side him, something he didn't anticipate or couldn't learn from the news. It would explain the long drive - he just keeps pumping the brakes for 20 min
HOAX 4 CASH!! Sikes filed for bankruptcy in San Diego in 2008. According to documents, he was more than $700,000 in debt and owed roughly $19,000 on his Prius.
What A Loser! i have a Toyota camry 09 and i have never had a problem with it. People are just looking for ways to get money out of Toyota. also if you dont know ow to stop a runaway toyota or car! you shouldnt even be driving!!.....
In a panic state, brain operates on instinct alone. Explains the pressing brake pedal repeatedly & doing nothing else.
Risk homeostasis: new technology in anything comes at a risk (space shuttles disasters, train crashes, nuclear plant failures etc.). Can't ever design for perfection.
Too, investigations create false security: (a % of any makes/models have accelerator problems).

Where did all of Mr Sikes supporters go??? When this story first came to light, there was about a 50/50 split between people who thought he was an idiot/fraud and people who thought this guy was another 'victim' of toyota's death traps. I'm not saying toyota doesn't have some recall issues or problems, but this was clearly NOT one of them. Forbes magazine just posted an excellent article about this story and presents the facts very clearly. Google 'forbes sikes hoax'
Face it - not all cars are made alike or mechanically perfect. This car had the "Toyota problem" and it could have ended up with the driver and others injured or worse. Thank goodness he was able to get the car stopped without serious incident.
@hellriser112 , Same here! I have an 05 Prius and ZERO problems!! Even with this problem, Toyota owns any american made car! Plus, I remember not many years ago FORD had the gas tank blowing up issue! I'll stay with Toyota
toyota is going to loose that one. you have to watch what systems on a car you fill with electronics. The accelerator and braking system are meant to be mechanical systems. my dad worked for a nasa project once and says he has a fix for toyota's problem.
"I pushed the button... [mumble] shut it off. It didn't shut off. So I did it a couple more times... it did shut down".
Really? I want to go on record saying this guy is full of shit. He's trying to set up a huge lawsuit. I predict this guy has a history of fraud or injury lawsuits or both.
@blueshifter - I did a case search in San Diego county where he resides. There doesn't appear to be much if anything even with this common name. No James Sikes even appears to have any debt trouble right now in the county. Note a bankruptcy search did find a chapt 7 in '99 for *a* James Sikes but not sure if it's this one. My guess is its too risky to do what this guy did anyways (run in the back of the cop car to stop) for it to be fraud.
@blueshifter - I stand corrected. I found a Bankruptcy case in 2008 for a James A. Sikes and Patricia L Sikes in San Diego county. On the list of creditors is Toyota Financial services. Not quite a smoking gun but at least makes it worth looking into. I'll keep looking to see if I find more!

c644ever 2 years ago 2
@c644ever um...new cars are computer programmed for the brake not to work when the accelerator is enguaged...therefore it wont work
fosterbrotherlj 1 year ago
Who programmed that box - never heard of redundant systems? Brake must work at any time even when theres a brake by wire system!
c644ever 1 year ago
But he said, when he apply the brakes and he can smell the brakes was burning. So it probably it working.
