I've been living near Tokyo in a capital city for years... Perhaps his winter is much warmer than ours. But his heating bill in that uninsulated shack must be about 30,000 yen a month or $300 bucks. No, joke.
I've been living in Yamanashi for 8 years. This is certainly rare, even in the country housing and especially land is VERY expensive. This guy is very blessed. I do think it may be possible to get lucky like him if you know the language, are serious about farming and your chances would go up by 80% if you married a Japanese like him.
WWOOF's website has plenty of listings now for people wanting to work in the countryside...a lot has happened since this was filmed. The internet has had a tremendously important affect on organic farming, for the better!
i wish i had the chance to travel to the country side when i went to Japan but i didnt have the money and i didnt have the time. I dont think i could be a farmer, growing up in LA i kinda like the city life
im from the US and with all the media that japan pumps out, it's rare to see footage of the agricultural and country life. the short documentary was quite refreshing :D. makes me a little bit more proud that I grew up in a small town.
That is a life I'd love. I've always been a farmer at heart and would jump at the chance to get a free start in farming even if it is just rice. I feel bad for rural Japan in that agriculture is so important to the world, yet so many don't see it as such. Without farmers, you have no food to eat. Farming isn't easy but it is very fulfilling.
Someone asked the same question previously, but I really am curious to know where this is in Shikoku...any idea? Also, if anyone knows more details about this story, could you please share? I've been wondering about how this whole thing worked out, or perhaps how it started out...any extra information would be greatly appreciated.
I live in a fairly rural part of Japan (near Shikoku). There are tons of abandoned houses. I would like living there but my wife must have all the luxuries.
Man, I would give up my bankster job immediately and make a move! This would be a life, away from hypocrisy...

So they just gave people free land who want to settle in the Japan countryside? Is this common in Japan?

I dont understand how rice farming in particular is dying out. Are they importing all their rice now? Or is it big business who is doing it?

If I ever came to live in Japan, this is where I would want to be. I love the outdoors! And I love the slow life :)

I want this to be my life. Maybe not necessarily japan, but a nice wife, some kids, a rice field and a goat is all you really need.
