There are a lot of people that think that the Death Note brought Light misfortune, or that he would have been happier if he never found it. I disagree. The Death Note and the events it led to were the first things in Light's life to truly challenge him, to break him out of the apathy he felt about everything. Even if he lived to an old age with a normal life without it, he wouldn't have been half as alive as he was with the Death Note.

If Mikami were smarter, he could have left a blank between the names. Then, when no one died, he could have written Light's name in, saving his "god". Even if they were sure of their plan, he could have at least added Light's name at the end when it didn't work. Light would still be suspected, but he would have been able to escape.

@Darkfire315 Or even better, when they suspected the note would be tampered with, mikami could have torn out a page and held on to it in case of emergency. That way no matter what the deal with the books he had a legitimate page on him at all times.
