  • Being a kid in the 90s, for a long time I didn't have any problems with the changes to the OT.

Now, I sure as hell do, and seeing this helped shape that opinion (all that work, and all for nothing.)

And on behalf of my generation, I'd like to apologize for everything that's been done to Star Wars to make it more appealing to us.

  • Mark Hamill is such a gentlemen.

I wish more young actors and actresses these days would display that reserve.

He was and is a remodel to do many people.

It is his fault I grew up to be pilot I think.

  • Tree Wars and The Jedi Squirrels: The Battle for Nuts!

Down with the Death Bug Zapper!

    Awesome post. Loved it.

  • Thumbs up for VHS!

  • thanks for posting. i've never seen this, i came looking after fanboys were bitching taht it wasn't on the blu ray (i admit tho it would be nice).

very good show! so fun + informative! thx again for posting. =0)

and hey, mark hamil's debut in voice-over! =0D

  • "remember the cantina scene? everybody loved it..cept George" -_-

  • @MajCinematic My pleasure - not sure why it didn't make the bluray set like the other ones did...

  • @VWVVWVVWV --Because in this documentary Lucas states: "A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing." Arguably, this is a fundamental truth which he seems to have forgotten while making the Prequel Trilogy.

  • @ProfessorGamez Agreed.

  • I remember watching this on TV circa 1983 (i was 7), infact i recorded or my parents did on to good old VHS!

  • forces of light and darkness locked in mortal kombat well then where's scorpion ? nah JK LOL star wars FTW !

  • Bless you for uploading this in one video. I could just smack Lucas for butchering the original films, especially the blu-ray versions. I want the originals re-mastered, not all the tinkering!!!!!!!

  • Funny I just found my old VHS of this video which prompted me to search for it on the internet which brings me here. The memories I have of popping this VHS in as a kid in the late 80's absorbing it all in.

  • @UncleRabbit1: I'm sorry but that is an incredibly BACKWARD attitude, without Lucas' vision (no I'm not a Lucas or Star Wars fanboy!) but I can acknowledge what he and ILM has done a lot for motion pictures, I think your comment should be directed at filmmakers (such as Stephen Sommers who sodomise and exploit this technology)if there were no CG, how would Iron Man or Transformers have turned out, also Jurassic Park, The Abyss, T2. Look at Benjamin Button and my fav Davey Jones, amazing stuff.

  • CGI should be used for things traditional special effects simply cant do, not replace traditional special effects. That chase scene in the forrest would have been 100% cgi these days, it just doesn't work. Like spiderman for instance, those city shots that are 100% cgi are just so fake, imagine if they had modeled the city and film it with a 2 fps camera and model spiderman in with modern day cgi, imagine how good that would look today. I guess the problem is $

  • not seen this in yonkies..thanks for uploading :D

  • @VWVVWVVWV #signed! no matter how well done CGI may be - it lacks the "warmth" of the models which lucas used in the original movies. the ships did not feel artificial. you somehow knew the really existed...

  • This looks better than the copy I have that I recorded from HBO back around '88 or so. Thanks so much for uploading this!

  • This documentary is the reason why I make videos. Plain and simple.

  • It’s amazing how much this documentary contradicts the teahouses and thought processes that went into making the prequel trilogy. It’s so much more satisfying, because you don’t constantly see the actors on a green screen. No wonder Lucas doesn’t want it on the Blu-ray.

  • @VWVVWVVWV that and a million other things =(

  • I remember watching this multiple times as a kid. One of my local libraries had the VHS, I always really wanted those toys they were using for the speeder bike videomatics.

  • The way I see it, CG is a useful tool, but it should be used in tandem with traditional effects rather then being the be-all end-all. Some people get it, like on the Pirates films, the Millennium Godzilla series or Guillermo del Toro's works and Jurassic Park is still the standard I hold effects up to because they had the sense to know when to use robots and when to use CG.

  • I'm looking forward to seeing a hd version of this! I hope they didn't update the special effects.

  • @VWVVWVVWV Lets just say George did some of his old tricks in Episodes 1 2 and 3. And Why? Because I saw it!!

  • "Special effects is a tool, means to telling the story. Special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

  • If only George used the same amount of attention to detail on the new trilogies....

  • @VWVVWVVWV It's not all about special effects. The downfall of the prequels was poor writing and bad directing. What made the original trilogy great was that it was a collaborative effort.

  • I am going to get killed for saying this but I think that traditional optical compositing from the seventies and eighties is in many ways better than the cgi that they have today.

  • @UncleRabbit1 They were also a great deal more difficult to do. How many stories do you hear about people doing traditional composites using pirated printers? It taught you not to waste film on useless shots and only show what was most important. Unlike today where a few clicks of a mouse can do anything, and you can embellish all you want...

  • @UncleRabbit1 there is a big differnce between Compositing digitally and actual CGI, the Digital Technology helps for better compositing, but the rest is technique, that comes down to wheather you use a real model, or a cg model, You could take original film elements, scan them digitally, then composite them digitally, and you would get a better result than using the older tools, but in those days that was the best they could do, and should be respected, the problem was choosing cg models

  • @UncleRabbit1 I too totally agree. Did mean you got to see all the films in the cinema again tho..

  • @TTempest1989 I remember seeing The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in the theaters in San Francisco first during Empire's original 1980 release and 1982 re-release and Return of the Jedi during its 1983 release and 1985 re-release. I saw all of the prequels in the theater as well.

  • @UncleRabbit1 So true! Real movie magic involved models, puppets and costumes all of which were 3-D props that existed in actual, physical environments. They were much more imaginative and true to life than CG which is fake 2-D images. I would much rather watch a stop-motion animated Taun Taun or hand-operated Rancor puppet any day! Dennis Muren, Phil Tippet, Richard Edlund and all of the real movie magicians will always be the best! Thank You original FX masters! We will carry the torch!

  • @UncleRabbit1 Set props and actually objects will always be better than CGI, mainly because they are ACTUALLY there. Hence it looks more real. But I'm not that upset over CGI, its good use for some stuff.

  • @UncleRabbit1 A-bloody-men.

    TWO CHEWBACCA THUMBS UP!!

  • Is is to cool to see that back then everything had to be built where today everything is done with computers.

  • This is great, thanks.

  • @54min 21sec is it the same George Lucas speaking who did the horrible episodes I-III ?

  • @filmnoirist I'm afraid so.

  • @filmnoirist He certainly isn't inconsistent with the Lucas of today. The prequels most certainly have stories, and damned good ones. Have you seen them?

  • Hello in TV LAND!

  • Man I never thought i'd ever see this again. Thanks so much for uploading!! Takes me back to bygone days when it was always hot and sunny :)
