  • Well, Wiz... you DO know what you are talking about! Giving someone a baby a few weeks old? That's scary! They are probably wondering "What's a crop?" We can't educate the world, can we? Sure hope he survived. I went thru a lot of digital thermometers as a breeder... thanks for the CORRECT info...

  • Well, I can't really see much on the video, but your bird sounds adorable. It also sounds like you guys really love your grey!

  • i keep my parrot in me waredrobe

  • im getting an African Grey in the near future and i was wondering what advise do yo have for new owners?

  • Well, Make sure you have the right food toys and enviroment to help them feel at home quicker. Spend time with your grey even if it's slowly and spend time with your bird and have your bird in your activities even if its taking him with you around the house and do not feel let down if the bird does not bond with you quickly.... it takes time some greys take longer than other; just be nice and loving and when it comes around it will be the best pet you ever have

  • yeah im getting one as a baby, like a few weeks old... my aunt is giving it to me cause shes breeding them

  • Are you having to had feed the baby? If so I would not reccomend doing so unless you have time not to mention you will need a book about hand feeding the bird otherwise you could harm the bird, formula needs to be at a certain temp, to hot and it will burn a hole through the crop of the bird. Not to mention after use tools need to be cleaned throughly everytime and needs to be sanitary cause they can get crop infections.

  • my cage is a ferret cage, its called the ferret palace, its four stories but i can take them all out to make it suitable for a bird, and the horizantal bars are spaced further apart from the vertical bars, theres one horizantal avery 6 inches, and a vertical every 3/4 of an inch. the dimensions are below

  • I peronally would not use the cage becuse greys can climb the bars and sometimes chew on the bars I would get a suitable bird cage before I get a grey....... they also need a certain bar spacing in there cage and doll rod perches do not work with them to well; I use manzagna branches and rope perches.

  • i think im going to have to leave for school at around 7 each morning, and my cage is only 4ft tall, 3 wide, 2 deep. what time does urs wake up?

  • mine goes to sleep pretty late, like around 12 1 am and wakes up around 10 am. what kind of cage do you have? Do you know the model?

  • how much time out of the cage and attention do these birds need, would a grey tolerate being left in its cage until i got home from school around 330Pm

  • THey do need a lot of attention, my birds wings are not clipped; she has a cage she can some in and out of at her own will. What time do you go to school? I am sure a grey can stand being locked up for that long; or you can get the birds wings clipped and let it come in and out of the cage BUT they have to have a lot of toys to keep them busy with.

  • they are really bad somtimes our vet says ours is going through its teenage years hust now so maybe thats why it bad all the time

  • Ya, I can see why people and vets say they are smart as a 5 year old, but there is one thing they left out..... they sure act like one too lol. Mine is so naughty she flys around squaking; but I let her act herself as long as she is not doing something wrong or being very destructive and getting into things she is not supossed to.... I also found it is rare to see anyone keep there parrot for long than 10 years it seems like.....

  • Your grey is pretty cool. How long have you had your grey and how old is it?

  • THanks :D I have had her since she was 4 weeks old and she is now 1 1/2 years old. SHe hatched Oct 5th 2005.

SHe has learnd a lot more now though; her personality has really come out since she learned how to fly though! Do you own a grey?

  • Yes I have had mine for 25 years and she tlaks alot too. They are like people only cooler. They are a longer than life partner.

  • THats 100% correct! I would never trade my bird in for another animal even the smartest dog or animal you can throw at me! I never realized how much I would of fallen in love with her. I never even liked birds before

  • until I started to hand raise wild birds or injured birds

  • Sorry about the spelling, and I agree 100% that they are wonderful pets. My grey has trained me well. I had another one and she got out and flew away on me a few years back. I had her for 12 years. It broke my heart, I hope that wherever she is she is healthy and happy and not dead. Her name is Cleo, and my 25 year old baby girl is named Max.

  • OMG, you scare me with your responses to both of your birds. Banging the counter and favoring the grey over the B&G macaw. Please get a clicker and learn how to train with that instead of the banging and such. Your bird with thank you and I will sleep better at night.

  • WTH are you talking about???? If you think I scare you then you better be afraid of everyone owning pets cause my animals are spoiled to death; so if you think something is wrong with the way I handle things...... something is wrong with you!

  • Yup, sure is!

What I would recommend ritz is when Mine bites i let her know it's to hard and I always tell her to be gentle before she puts her beak on any part of me it works but when she is playing she tends to get rough with me and when she bites a little hard I put her down and tell her she was bad and walk away letting her know what she did was wrong and that when she bites hard she knows playtime is over I don't yell at her but I tell her in a stern voice

  • I agree having an african grey or any parrot is like having a child, def not like a dog at all the need constant stimuli.Talking to them alot helps, but if your going to own one you need to commit to it they are def like children.Having an open cage helps, but like wizard says they can be a bit of a pain when guests arrive.wizard and ritz have the right idea.

  • Dudes... not a beginners bird. Start with a finch, or a cockatiel or something. We have an A.G., and she's wonderful, but VERY time consuming. Plus, they can be moody the first 2 years. NOT for beginners!

  • well mines coming up to two years, will he/she ease up one the biting. sidney is very good iwth my father who is the most closest to sidney, but everyone else he bites alot. any training you could recomend

  • I love african greys...They are so cute when they talk (( Mock or whatever they do ^^; ))

  • feather dust? they natrually produce dust but it doesnt fall off like human dandruff or anything, natrual showers keep them clean, but even if you didnt shower them they dont have alot of feather dust

  • i am thinking of getting an african grey but i read that they produce alot of feather dust, is this true?

  • Hi i agree i have one. name of enstein and he is a crack up. he sings day oh and good morning and sneezes and coughs and little things like that.

    thanks for the post

  • but it varies on what type of bird since they all have different personalitys. for the most part as long as you talk to them give them lots of attention they will be your best friend a life long companion.

THey are not the kind of birds you lock up in a cage and only let out for an hour or 2 a day you have to interact with them and give them love if they want love.

  • well, they are time consuming because they need alot of love, but i really spoil mine and hes out of his cage alot and his wings are not clipped. she is an extremely good bird, but can be anre, its like taking care of child really. I have 3 kids, my 7 year old son my boyfriend lol and my bird :)

  • how are african grays to keep?

  • lucky is smart.
