I agree, it's an improvement over the butchered altered US cut. It's kind of like how New World did the same thing to Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind with their 1985 Warriors of the Wind cut. I grew up on both movies when i rented them on video when i was 5 back in 86 even though this creeped me out as a kid with that dummy, i'm an 80's kid. I even had my parents tape this movie and Warriors of hte Wind on video and now their uncut versions blows them away
I was really scared of the uncut movie as a kid. There was a part where the boy opened the closet and a big smiling mouth with lots of teeth appeared in there. I watched the heavily cut version of this yesterday and there wasnt that closet part in it. Can you tell me where is it in these youtube clips because I want to watch it again. Thanks!
Roland Emmerich has yet to make a better film than this one. Brilliant, brilliant movie! And Fletcher is one of the coolest and creepiest dummies in film history.
I agree, this one is one of my favorites and you remember this movie as a kid? did you ever see this in a theater when it came out August 31st 1986 in it's New World Pictures Dubbed heavily butchered and altered version? it's amazing how the US can butcher foreign films in that time like Legend or Brazil for US audiences and this movie along with those two are all three imaginative movies of the fantasy genre now in director's cuts.
I actually did see this film in the theater when i was seven years old, and it left quite an impression on me. I even had the movie poster hanging in my room for years afterward. Legend and Brazil are favorites of mine as well.
That's good to hear, i saw this on video back in 1987 when i was 6 and it scared the hell out of me and made me afraid of dummies and the same thing happened when i watched "Magic" on video with my family as a little one. Did Fletcher ever scare you? hope you enjoy this version and put some more comments on my MC Joey videos cause there's barely any comments.
Fletcher scared the living crapola out of me when i saw this in the theater. But once it was released on home video i watched it over and over and over again and started to become quite fond of the little creep.
What about Fats from Magic? do you think he's as scary as Fletcher?
I watched Magic when i was only 5 in 1986 when i use to live in St. Louis, my two big brothers were into horror and i watched it with them and my god the dummy scared me shitless and made me afraid of dummies. I watched Making Contact the next year and ditto.
Yes, Fats is just as scary to me. I remember seeing Magic around the same age on cable t.v., and the scene where Fats is used to kill Burgess Meredith in the woods nearly traumatized me.
Same here and that part where Fats stabbed the husband traumatized me. Both Making Contact and Magic made me afraid of dummies even of one of my brother's Mortimer Dummy, it wasn't until i was 11 when i conquered my fear of dummies. But Fletcher and Fats still give me the creeps.
Don't you think this movie reminds you of Dead of Night, The Twilight Zone TV Show, Poltergeist and even Pan's Labyrinth?
I had a Mortimer Snerd and a Charlie McCarthy dummy as a kid that i used to scare the hell out of my younger sister with. This movie reminds me of all of those films and E.T. as well.
I did liked those Mortimer and Charlie dummies in movies. How is this like E.T.? there's no aliens in it. It's like how people say Avatar is like Dances with Wolves and Ferngully combined, it's how how people compare this to E.T. if there is no aliens in it. That is badass you owned the movie poster and this movie on video since then, the german cut is a big improvement and has a good score that sounds like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Jerry Goldsmith combined.
@Johnlindsey289 No, there's no aliens in it but Emmerich was trying to make a movie in the same vein as Spielberg's earlier films. Joey's room was obviously patterned after Elliot's and the neighborhood looks a lot like the one in both E.T.and Poltergeist. The government scientists setting up operations at Joey's house is also very similar to what happened in E.T. All of the moving and flying toys are obviously a Poltergeist / Close Encounters reference and the red phone glows like E.T's finger.
@Johnlindsey289 That's right. My room was filled with Star Wars merchandise as a kid. Dark Knight and Heat are very similarly styled action / crime dramas.
That is a difficult question... but I think is relative to the place were you are from. And even then is difficult to say, here in Argentina for example Joey was on theaters so that would make it more well known... but actually is the oposite because Pinocchio had more air in television on the saturday morings when children watch more tv so its more remembered by new generations than Joey. I think both are very obscure Non-Disney-like films who deserve more views from a wider audience.
thank you SO much! i have fond memories of this movie as a kid, but naturally nobody every knows what i'm talking about when i mention it! fletcher is so creepy!
Well kind of but more like "The Twilight Zone" TV show which Emmerich was inspired by according to him on a interview that i did research on in a translated German interview.
