There's a theory going around that Dredg is taking a stab at popular music with this album - that it's one giant concept, satire album. If that's true, then it's a stroke of pure genius. If not, well, it's an okay album. But... I seriously believe the theory, especially in the lyrics of a song like this.
Love it, i can sway to this with a babe and have a good ol' time with it. Album is about a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. Don't listen to the haters. Many fun chorus's and beats on this cd. Calm melodies. Very dredg-esque song writing. Not a powerful rock album, but definitely an album for true dredg fans, not fanboys of certain sounds of certain albums.
I don't see why this album is so hated. Although it's not nearly as good as their other work, I still think it's a quality and original piece of work. The beauty of Dredg is that they are always changing and evolving their sound, and although it seems as if quite a few of you don't seem to embrace it, why don't you sit down and listen to the album a few times? I've done that and although I didn't like it at first it has grown on me. I'd much rather have them progress than stay the same soundwise
@TeamRivalLive The main reasons are that either people think it's changed too much from their previous works, they find the drop in the quality of the songwriting too great or they simply like guitars more than the electronic and synth sounds from this album. Dredg took a large risk when they changed their music so much and the fact is that the listeners largely don't approve of it. It's somewhat like LP's new album, in that it grows on you, but it just isn't as good as the others.
Just beautiful! Dredg always amazes me in different musical ways! And, it sounds really natural....They can do whatever they want. There are people who just don't respect the musicians. Anyway, like them are plenty, like dredg just dredg!
I am AMAZED at the lack of innovation among dredg fans who think this is "crap". What the fuck are you people smoking? Music is just like anything else in life...It's about moving forward. New sounds...new styles...new horizons...new places...new people. Looking forward.
Learn to love change and something different and unexpected. You can either be crushed by the wave...or learn to surf. It's your choice.
Ha.. This pretty much sums it up. This album is a disaster, after The Pariah I was afraid this would happen... CWA was more mainstream sounding than El Cielo, but it was still a great album. The Pariah was borderline awful, and this is just miserable. What happened to creativity? Remember The Canyon behind her? Traversing? Triangle? Symbol song? I hoped this album would be better, what a shame.
Maybe you guys should consider the fact that this is Dredg you are all complaining about. These guys have been doing their own thing for so long why not keep trying new and different ways to express themselves?
Who cares if they wanted to go in a more mainstream direction for once? It's still the best fucking mainstream stuff I've heard in a while.
Stop whinging and appreciate what Dredg are creating for YOU.
Oh no! the nothing indie band that I used to wear like a badge as a teenager sounds DIFFERENT! Fuck these sellouts! This is like some Justin Timberlake shit! I like to drop names like that because they're easy targets! Can you tell how indie I am, guys?? CAN YOU??? D:
the problem is not that the new album sounds different, but that it sounds bad. "Catch without Arms" sounded different than "El Cielo", and still it was a great album. But "Chuckles.." IMO is mostly just bad. The songs sound like standard-radio-pop stuff, which you have heard thousand times before. They are no more as deep and emotianal and beautiful as the former albums.
@AmazingAnts It sounds to me like your not so much a fan of music, as you are a fan of thinking the music you listen to is better than everyone else's :P
@KnaveMurdok i dont think that the music i listen to is "better" than everyone else's. in fact, i wish that many of the ""unknown"" bands i listen to would gain greater public attention, because imo they just deserve it. everyone should listen to what he wants. And I simlply dont like the new Dredg album, especially this song. i cant understand why you seem to have a problem with that.
@AmazingAnts mostly because I like Dredg, I like the new album and I like this song, and I think it's being harshly judged on what seems to me as an arbitrary and unfair set of standards. I also have always known Dredg as one of those bands that sucks in the pretentious fly by night music nerds, who will latch onto an obscure indie band and then dump them as soon as they want to change their sound, or sign to a new label. It happened to Upsilon Acrux and now it's happening to Dredg :(
@KnaveMurdok simple. the beat is horrible and way too simple for Dino... there is barely any of mark's great guitar work... and the lyrics are not that great. like wtf? here we go, go again, following all the trends? it's catchy... which is what they were going for but it's not very memorable... like el cielo
as opposed to night falls, beneath candle light... writing lyrics about a room and making it so beautiful... yep..
@impaledonion I've been listening to Dredg since I was about 17 (2000-2001 era) and while I admit this is a new direction for them, I don't understand, or agree with the notion that this difference somehow means it's a bad song. I'll admit I miss the "earthiness" of the band's sound, if felt it made them very unique, but I also recognize that as a bygone era, just as I recognize that Incubus couldn't stay a funk-rock band forever. Perhaps I'm just more accustomed to the changing of the tides.
@AmazingAnts Lol. Every band has their ups and downs guys. Dredg is just making it more comercial, so more people can buy :) For me Dredg is still an awesome band but for me El Cielo was the best album they made. Critics are always good for experience even if they are bad, I agree with that this album is worst than The Pariah but that's part of the experimental music, isn't it? You don't know when something is going to go as good as it was before, I know a lot of people liked it depends on likes

@KnaveMurdok I was cool with the change from leitmotif to el cielo, and from el cielo to CWA, and from CWA to pariah... so I am accustomed to change.
This new stuff; however, isn't that great and I really hope it's a one time experimental collaboration.
