He's a phenomenon. Bought the double-blue three-sided album while in the Army, 1968-69. Him and Hendrix were IT period. Saw JW at Santa Monica Civic Center 1970 or 71, the Johnny Winter And tour with Rick Derringer. My ears are still ringing from that performance; saw him again 74 in Memphis, couple years later in Nashville. He has the most blistering guitar attack style that is his alone. No one sounds like JW because there's no one out there like him, never has been.
Nice studio work. After this, Jagger/Richards wrote "Silver Train" for Winter. Yes, they actually wrote a song for Johnny. I see that as the ultimate compliment. And, man, Johnny whipped on Silver Train. Lyrics....? If you have teenagers... they should not hear it.
Saw Johnny with.... JOHNNY WINTER AND...at the FILLMORE WEST, FRISCO, in 1971. THEY played their live album note for note...F-cking AWSOME!!!!!!Those were the days
Don't really figure Johnny , or anyone else with any REAL self-respect, would seriously give a flying f-ck about some bubblegum organizations like GRAMMY's or ROCK N"ROLL HALL OF FAME bullsh-t...DO YOU?????
I remember being a teenager and seeing JW in Circus Magazine and he was holding a Gibson Firebird which I thought then--and still do--was the coolest guitar on the planet. About a week later I was in the record shop and picked up (his then new album) Still Alive and Well---and have been a fan ever since. That is such a fantastic blues guitar record with a great cover of the Stones Silver Train. The playing on that album would twist most guitar players fingers in knots. JW was the BEST!!
JW The Doobs,Los Lobos Little Feat Steve Miller The Fixx and more are not in the bogus hall of fame. Since they inducted Abba, Iggy Poop The Cure, and ready to welcome the beastie boys that verifies the place has No Credibility. How can you have an accredited music hall without the legends? Screw those induction committee jackasses.
I knew you when you played at my bar..way down the road...60 miles out of New Orleans..pass Buras La. I almost threw you out the club...Randys. We were almost in Venice La.
I have been a Johnny winter fan scince I was 13 and had the oppurtunity to be a stage manager at a club in Hampton Bays New York loading all the gear and speaker's up on the stage, I fell asleep on top off the speakers as he was tunning up. Was a great show "Still Alive and Well" now I understand how all the musicians and crew look waisted; They are exhuasted,.little high yes. Then he played the Garden. Amazing talent, blistering riff's. Clapton makes it look easy and Johny makes it look hard.
i must jhonny winter is the king of the blues and i love stevie ray vaughn i saw them both and would rather see stevie but jhonny come on hes the king no doubt in=m sure stevie would agree
Great playing, it's in his blood like Hendrix and they both sang on top of beautiful guitar playing. I'd like to see Johnny one more time in concert. I prefer the Rolling
Stones' version but Johnny could play ANYTHING, as long as it's a good song.
@jeffj257 There was a possibility years ago that Johnny was actually going to play with the Stones. Look it up. Never jelled but everbody was talking about it.
The leads on this are fantastic, the whole thing is recorded much more competently than the original. Winter sounds like he takes it seriously, while Mick sounds like he has an evil grin the whole time he sings it. I still prefer the Stones original album version over all others though for how grimy it sounds. It might as well be Caligula singing on Banquet.
Difficult to add anything to this Stones HorseFighter: fact is Johnny is from Texas, and the weather down there makes peole a little tougher than anywhere else.
This is why he could add a different dimension to this cover: did you notice that while in the Stones version it seems Mick is just "singing" the lyrics, Johnny is just speaking to the girl?????????
Ahhh yeah, a song about pedophilia on the road in the late 60's. Love that they could get away with songs like this back then. Could you imagine the outrage if someone has wrote this song now? lol. Moral Police! Moral Police!
I love this version.. only Johnny winter could get me to listen to the Stones...I prefer aggressive guitarists....his ability to own it is what makes this version a killer...I never knew my mother knew I could scream like that..for another example listen to the killer solo he does at the end of Jumpin Jack Flash from the JW And live album...of course he owned Dylan also....my favorite American guitarist...
Johnny knocked me out years ago with this rendition, it's actually just Johnny. Just an amazing guy, all the agony he expresses with such irony and soul. Dude kicks out the walls with this one.
@ sublim- yeah, I agree, JW does it better. Saw him a few years ago when he was really sick, needed help to get to the stage. Yet, he could still play.
Normally I wouldn't try to compare but in this case I just had a listen to the Rolling Stones version. Although both versions are brilliant I feel that Johnny ads a real touch of seriousness to the track where the Stones is more up-tempo and almost a bit flip. If you are talking about a "hanging matter" or a "capital crime" it sort of does well to give it a bit of gravitas. Well done Johnny!

@SubliminalAttraction I always loved johnny's work but I think he's really over stressed the vocals a bit on this particular cover. Jagger's subtle style fits the topic of the song a bit better as it suggests that there really is no hanging matter or capital crime in the eyes of the character he's playing out in the song. Hence it's Ok for a much older man to shag a 15 year olds.
Winters rendition of The Stones Silver Train is a much better comparison.... both are fantastic!
I had this album, dont know where it ended but I will never forget it just great all the J. Winter albums, I mean all the guys just dont talk to much about him since hes such a great rocker, whats going on? right?
