I was 9 yrs. old in 1980 & that TD that Marcol scored to win the game is still one of the most amazing plays i've ever seen in my life, especially considering the scenario. The game was fairly deep into OT, there might have been only a few minutes left & the defenses dominated the whole game. GB held Payton to 65 yds. on 31 att. & his longest run was only 9 yds. GB almost tackled him for a safety late in the game too.
Chicago remembered that game & beat GB 61-7 in the rematch that yr.
I remember some of the first games I went to as a kid about 5 or 6 years old at Hillsdale and I marveled at how far he kicked the ball and as the ball went off and down the side of the hill and kickoffs going through the uprights. But seared into my brain is the backspin on the kickoffs almost to the point you could hear the spin from the seats. Had also the fortune to go to College with Manny Matsakis at Capital U. Probably 2 of the best college kickers ever especially at small schools.
Back in the early 70's I watched Chester warming up before a preseason game. He liked to warm up with 50 yard field goals. On this day he was hitting the ball very well. He finished his warm up hitting three 60 yarders in a row... and then quit. There was no wind blowing to help the ball. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it!
Many many years after that famous game against chicago I heard the radio play by play of that moment from an NFL films show on EPSN classic and the only other time I can remember hearing jim irwin get that excited was when chris jacke beat tampa in the last second back in '89
@uwtitanfan That was a GREAT game (or... at least a great ending) and I'm lucky enough to have it on DVD. I heard Irwin on the '89 team highlight reel and yes, he did go crazy. :^) But it was all part of the mood of the 1989 season, a very special time for Packer fans.
That Bears/Packers game in 1980 was a joke. Both teams were terrible. Crap teams and a crap win. The only thing on that field worth 2 cents that day was Walter Payton, everyone else, a joke.
@toeazy34 Payton was stifled that day (31 att. 65 yds.), Eddie Lee Ivery outshined him running the ball on that day (13-73). Payton did give his all though, like he always did, running like a rodeo horse & getting out of being tackled for a safety late in the game. Only Payton could've done that! Payton's is the best (& i'm a Packers fan) but he didn't do anything running the ball that day. Phipps throwing 3 INT's were what did Chicago in in the end.
I was 12 years old when you the "famous" kick came into play. I was at my uncle's house and remember betting the bus driver a quarter that the Packers would beat the Bear's. My uncle's are aging,(we are of Polish heritage) and the Marcol Touchdown is still buried in our green and gold minds/hearts. Thank you for the many memories! Dziekuja!!! JBJr
Chester, I was at that game in 1980. I was 13 years old. I'lll never forget that day. When the kick was blocked I hung my head. Then I heard the crowd roaring and I looked up and you had caught the ball and ran it around for a TD!! Plus it was against Da Bears. haha I was jumping up and down. So thanks for the GREAT memory I had with my Dad. That was only one of 2 games I ever got to go to and I lived in Wisconsin all my life until 98. Ill never forget you Chester Marcol....
Ha! I was at that game too, with my dad. It was the only Packer game I went to as a kid (made the Championship game in 97 and Reggie's last home game too). I was only 9 and did not know what happened until my dad told me. Do you remember it was replayed on the Alcoa commericals in the 80s? Great heads-up play!
@floridaeagle Ha ha! Wow. I was only a year old when it happened, but I've since seen it in replay. What a play. Chester looked like he was running for his life, and he still looks shellshocked in that post-game photograph where he's standing with Lynn Dickey! Good memories though. Thanks for your contribution to the Packers, Chester!
@usmmakp I found this thread while I was looking for the video clip but I STILL have not found it or seen it anywhere. I know it exists because as was mentioned it was in the alcoa commercial. and you know NFL keeps video of everything. In this day and age of digital there is no reason why this game isnt on a hard drive somewhere. I will keep looking and hoping someone posts it up.
Here is a pic I found of the play.

Thank you, would'nt surprise me. Above all his other stats. the most incrdible, if not bizzare, is that Page has 28 blocked kicks !!

I was at the 1980 game. Alan Page threw his helmet about 80 yards after Marcol scored
