  • this is amazing, what brushes did you use!

  • Ah! MetisXJay~~!

  • @LaraYokoshima it would be great if you could make a tutorial video of this. i am trying to follow your steps carefully and you have really helped me a lot in colouring. this is inspiring!!! you are awesome!!!!

  • @ayuwaza Hey, glad you like it :)

I will soon upload a new video, sadly it is not very explanatory, but I will try to add some tips in it.

  • @LaraYokoshima ok!! looking forward to it!!! (^o^)~~!!!

  • I can't tell based on the picture screen- but do you add another layer for the shadows so you can erase them, or do you use a more transparent brush directly over the base color on your layer?

  • @myshadowcantdance I do my shadows in the same base color layer because that way I can blend them and make them look natural. Sometimes I like to add an extra shadow layer for a deeper effect, but in this drawing this was not used.

  • @LaraYokoshima great, thanks!

  • Wah honeydew syndrome really love it

  • And what are the settings for the Round Camelhair brush? I see you customized this one too.

  • @omigodcelebitchy Maybe you control those strokes from the "general" window box?!?!

  • Comment removed

  • do you draw the lineart with a vector tool or free hand it? i can't make up my mind how i should draw digitally lol when i try to free hand, the line art looks kinda sloppy.

  • @phoenix9909 I draw everything freehand, but digitally, with a wacom tablet. Vector isn't really an option for me, since it'll never look as natural like real inking/sketching. You could try vectorizing your lineart later, to retain quality when you want to upscale your drawings.

  • why do people keep on calling honeydew syndrome yaoi???

it's shounen ai cos yaoi HAS SEX AND THERE IS NO SEX

Either that, or i missed a HUGE chunk in this manga :P

  • Can you colour with Deleter ComicWorks in English?

  • @mertoness I think ComicWorks has some coloring tools, but still the best option is to color with Corel Painter, Photoshop and even Paint Tool SAI, which I've found to be an incredibly good painting software and it doesn't slow your computer down like, ever.

  • i like your music choices, haha!

Very nice picture *_* oh, yaoi ~

  • LOL at the music XD

  • did you have to flatten the image first, then color?

  • @UnholyMalucel Flatten? I don't think so, I need the lineart layer on top of the colors, at the very start there are 2 layers, the white background and the transparent lineart layer.

  • ur really good. i was just going to speed it up to look at the different steps but this song kept me from doing so.

  • as it leaves the image without color?

  • Omg, so sexy @_@ Can I have your autogr- *dies from massive nosebleed*

  • when i saw the video picture i thought it looked liek an uke! i was sooo right. :3

  • how do you blend it so well?!

  • @Henty1993 Hm, I guess getting familiar with the program and the tablet really helps. That and a lot of practice :)

  • Do you have a dA?*__* this is simply amazing!

  • @HirukoConnection Yeah, but nothing's in there. I have y!Gallery, Mangabullet, Pixiv and Tumblr accounts, as well as a Twitter. Check my youtube profile to get the links :)

  • I have a question, in your video description you said "My brush of choice is Round Camelhair with various settings." Is that only for the coloring, or did you also used said brush for the sketch?

  • @ForbiddenFish Just for the coloring, I explained that because all I do here is color :)

To sketch I can use the pencil or ballpoint pen tools in Corel Painter. Lately, Paint Tool SAI is my choice for sketching.

  • @LaraYokoshima Oh okay! Thank you so much for replying and of course, for uploading this video. :) Keep up the good work and damn, I so wish I could draw like that.

  • Thats the point I never get >< blending the shadows. I don´t know why I am to stupd for that but it just wonß´t work.

Absolutely awesome picture and coloring technique!

  • @roxasgirl1992 Don't worry, it all comes with practice and patience :)

Also, choosing the right brush and settings will help a lot.

  • Dude, this is like watching magic in the making. ;D

  • Do you know of any good corel painter tutorials? I have painter 11, but i'm so lost on how it works. If you know where there are some quality tutorials please do let me know! Wonderful work :) I'm not really a Yaoi fan, but I can still appreciate good artwork when i see it :D

  • I read the comic and it seems unfinished :/

  • nice job! I am new to this so videos like this are always a help.

One thing tho. When you add in the darker skin tones in, do you just use the brush tool set on a soft point or do you use the gradient tool?

  • Hadouken!<3

plus at first I was like "Is that a girl?" Honestly. Because some girls do have manly faces =3= But then I paused and was like "Oh 8D"

  • um sorry for the question, but how do you shade like that? It sorta fades. When you did his nose on 2:52

Thats what I'm talking about...it might be a dumb question, but I've only started coloring digitally a week ago...and have no idea how to color anyways.

  • i can't believe some ppl are so blind and retarded to think that the one with the pony tail is a girl!!!!!

    SERIOUSLY??!?!?! IT'S OBVIOUS THAT IT'S A GUY!! >_>"

    a rlly sexy one -w-

YAOI FTW!!!!! AWESOME PICTURE!!!!!! <3333 u are really talented!!

  • @XxONExX100 I just think they are blinded by their homophobic selves but that's okay, only yaoi fans will recognize it and enjoy it and that's enough for me :)

  • @LaraYokoshima I won't lie, I also thought that it was a girl as well. I was creeped out at first but I found out what Yaoi was and now I understand it. But I won't let that cloud my views on how amazing this art piece is. Nobody should discriminate against art. By the way, excellent job. I envy your coloring skills :'(

  • Simply amazing!! i watched your Dante video too and my jaw dropped! I can look up to your coloring skills. :3 I've been wanting to learn how to color digitally and I have Corel Painter Essentials 4, i guess its only a matter of getting it right. I will be sure to use your awsome art as a reference! Thank you! :D

  • @Ninjaz93 Thanks, glad my videos can be of help. I have tried Painter Essentials, sadly I must say that its brushes are not customizable nor have the same quality finish as Painter, so maybe it's gonna be a little hard to get it right at first. Still, good luck! :)

  • Whoever thinks these two were girls are obviously blind >,< Seriously they are too masculine to be females~ Anyways.... This picture is, well, I don't want to say darling but it is breathtakingly adorable C: Lovely picture~

  • thing about coloring, you have to be able to draw first.

    you can do both!

  • they look like the characters from the comics I'm reading - HoneyDew Syndrome.. X'D

Nice coloring and sketch btw! and I like yaoi.. :'D

  • @ColorfulGobstoppers It's actually a fanart for Honeydew Syndrome's creator. Glad you like! :)

  • anime guys are barely male anyway

  • @boothesquirrel Not all, it depends on context and series of course, so your argument is not really that valid...

  • Wait.. wut? that's a dude o.O

    f*ck...

  • Hey, at 1:11 how did you tilt the drawing? And really well done btw

  • Hadouken !

  • nyaaa!!! i want 2 draw like this!!

  • :DDD <33

  • Without words... Amazing!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, awesome drawing!! I'd like to know , how do you turn the screen like that? and the dark-to-pale color of the background? love your art btw.

  • The guy hugging him looks kinda like Gakupo/Gackpoid :x

Love this pic btw. I love the expressions :3

  • I feel stupid since i thought the one who is hugging was a girl. :/ Sorry for that. :d

  • this is really good!! may i ask some questions?

how do you turn the picture angle? ( i've just started using painter and i don't have a clue on anything!!! ^-^')

and what brush do you use to put down the base colours? (just wondering ^^)

if you know any good help sites as well that would be great ^^ thanks!

  • man i'm mad jealous. -.- I needa practice and get a good as you guys.

  • This is so pretty!!! They're so cute!!! >w< I wish I could draw like that... The only thing I can do is a anime girl's face... With the eyes and all... Not even a boy...

  • This is so pretty!!!

    They're so cute!!! >w<

  • ......Your fucking amazing and i dont think theres anything wrong with drawing two guys hugging. I've drawn anime gay guys before so whoever has an issue with your amazing are needs to see a doctor

  • @xoxoxoxAubyxoxoxox Wow, thank you for your support, very much appreciated :D

  • @xoxoxoxAubyxoxoxox i thought they were two girls ... lol

  • ......Your fucking amazing

  • Do you have a DA account BTW? xDD

  • @DanielaElric Yes, but I don't update there. Please see my official website to see my artwork.

  • OMG! you're so amazing! The coloring and shading are soo awesome! And you're right :3 they look sexy ^^ xDD

  • OMG, you are such a great artist...

  • I loved the music ahahah but damn maybe its just me but..i really have a hard time with shading >_< damn it i should take classes !

  • BL <33

which buttom is for gradient o_o?

did you separate line from background? (like the background for line is white or transparent)

i'm trying to use painter but i never understand it...

  • At 6:00, did you use a selection tool to shade his hair? o.o

  • @Chaos4blood You could do that or just lock the colored pixels so new strokes won't come outside and blur everything.

  • :O Are those two guys?

    ... YAY <3 Yay for yaoi ;3

  • what are the names of those songs and by who?

    nice drawing too :)

  • @DRxSqueakin ...it's on video info. Hadouken! - Music for an Accelerated Culture - Get Smashed Gate Crash and the one not listed is Declaration of War by the same band.

  • LOL.. You should make more videos before bed 8D

  • Can you tell me what you used to draw the characters please?

I just like the way that looks. :]

  • @IHeartRamune it looks like they may have been drawn on paper and scanned in.(you can tell by the way the lines are all texture-ized, but i could be wrong)

  • @valeoncat13 It was all done in Painter 9.5 at that time. Even the pencil looking lines :)

  • @LaraYokoshima lol well then your obviously a painter genius XD

  • guess i'm the only one that thinks the songs bad ass

  • Awesome song. And art!

  • do you still have that picture? Can I have it please?!

  • hmmm, do u know the manga, "king me" ?

  • @Zerowings101 Nope, sorry.

  • @LaraYokoshima yeah its just a fan made manga and I just thought ur characters look like the characters from king me. Nice drawing btw! :)

  • who's the boy and who's the girl?

  • @spawnninja64123 Both boys are characters from Nuu, so this is a gift for her.

  • It really looks complicated!

  • do you good sir/ma'am have a Deviantart?

  • @MrPanicR I do, but I've never uploaded anything there. You are still welcomed to follow my website.

  • How is it the original outline is not covered by the paint ?

  • @excaliburxz Because it's in the top layer and colors are not applied on it.

  • daaayum you're awesome at this!! do you have DA for an instance?? :O

  • lovely! I also have painter ix, and I was wondering how you pop out the extra brush settings? And which setting you use to lay your base tones? thanks!

  • @Sinacious All brush settings can be changed in the main General window, which usually is already there when you start the program. You can use any kind of brush you want to paint the base tones, the only recommendation I can give is the opacity must be at 100% and use a brush that doesn't leave any textures... or you can use a pen too, that way you can ensure the colors are flat and crisp on the edges.

  • wow lily number 2

  • Cute drawing! I just got Corel, and am trying it out, and had a question. Did you do your lineart in Corel, or another program? If you did do it in Corel, what brush did you use? Thanks. :)

  • omg first time i saw it i immediatly thought jay and charles and then i was like wait charles is blonde.lol

    this is gorgeuos beyond belief

  • UNF UNF UNF

    YAOI.

  • I love your art.....so incredible.....and also your painting is incredible...

  • what are the brushes you've use here?

  • your an amazing drawer <3

  • woah, this style is amazing. This reminds me of this other artist, you draw just like her, and she did yaoi also. People called her Lily or something. She had a website where she posted her drawing, they were mostly naruto drawings, just wondering if you were the same artist. Please respond

  • @velstor Sorry, don't know that Lily gal. Thanks for the comment tho.

  • @LaraYokoshima Well you draw truly magnificent. May i ask just one more question, where did you pick on your art style? I love to draw anime type stuff also and wish to get better, if there is anything you recommend then i would really love to hear it.

  • @velstor My style evolved very slowly I think, since I've been drawing for more than 10 years now and I tested several other styles influenced by my favorite artists. I ultimately decided on a more bishonensque style, but yes, it took me a while. All I can suggest is you choose a style line and then develop your own with time :)

  • @velstor Hoshino Lily?

  • @Kaorune No, sorry. Why suddenly people confuse me with that wonderful artist is beyond my comprehension O_O;

  • can you tell me what program you use to take the video and making it faster? I use camstudio and virtual dub and I don't know how to compress the vid in virtual dub and it takes hours for saving =/

  • i only wan to say one word

    Amazing !!!!!!!

  • I hate you!

you make things seem sooo easy! x/

but thank you anyways- you helped out a lot.

  • can you tell me the settings you used for your brush?

please and thank you (awesome drawing btw)

  • It's been so long, but I think it was resat 60%, bleed 30% and opacity 80% or something like that...

  • @LaraYokoshima Thanks i'll try that. :D

  • what brush did you use to color it on corel? :)

  • This is such a good tutorial! <33 I definately learned some things here to help me with colouring my lineart. And the music is good too. XDD

I love your drawing style by the way! The guys looks great. ;) And the one whose smirking reminds me of Soubi from loveless for some reason...

    Great vid!

  • so you used the same brush the whole time? round canmelhair?

  • Yup. It's a simple illustration.

  • hi! i love your art! it's really good!...umm...

just a question...hope you could answer...how do you color without covering the outlines? i notice that while you're coloring the picture, the colors don't overlap the outlines...how do you do that?...i've been watching diff. tutorials but they're using a different technique...

  • Simple, I just color in another layer so my lineart remains untouched :)

  • omg hot. Haha. ^^

  • what type of brush is that? WHat settings

  • is this yaoi and do you have a Deviant art?! Great pic!

  • MaY i kNoW yOUr NaTiOnAlIty PLs?

  • Don't people read profiles anymore? :(

  • The mUsiC Rox!!! iT sO sUiTs This TuToRiaL!! cOz iT aLsO ROCKz!!! yeah!!

  • Everytime I use a blender brush in painter it makes white marks on the areas with no color..... The white marks cover the lower layers

  • Please be more specific. Which brush are you using exactly? Some brushes leave white traces on new layers because the resaturation value is very low. What I suggest is using a flat brush (no effects) to apply a base color, then lock the transparent pixels and then apply shading, that way no white residue will be left.

  • It's the blenders type brush, all of them. All the blender brush variants leave the white blotchy areas when you smear or blend off into a transparent area.

  • I see. The problem is you are using those blenders on the edges of 1 color layer, not to actually blend two colors. I tested them and I don't think blender brushes are made to work on different layers. They work fine on the canvas layer and if you use layers, just be careful not to use it on the edges of a colored area. I assume then that you are trying to blend two colors on two different layers. It will never work that way.

  • @MAiKUxArt I had the same problem, only it didnt do it before until corel got an error and closed then when I came back it did that wierd white mudge thing :/

  • Amazing. Just amazing.

How do you blend in layers without getting all the annoying white spots on the transparent areas?

    Thanks for your time.

  • I'm usually very careful when filling with the base color first I guess. A dark background is recommended so you won't miss anything.

  • Also how do you color on the lineart without painting over the lines? Or does Corel painter just work like that?

  • I answered this before: the lineart is on a separate layer above the rest of the color layers, so no matter what, the lines will never be covered nor smudged.

  • Oh, ok thanks so much :D

  • How many layers did you use? They are the things that mess me up right now cause' I'n not entirely sure how to use them.

  • Do you think you would ever consider creating an actual tutorial? This was really impressive. I've seen lots of tuts, some good, some horrible, but they are truly a great learning experience.

That aside, this was really cool (shounen ai/yaoi = FTW). *Off to part 2*

  • Thank you for your comment :)

I've been considering doing a tutorial video now that many people have asked the same question. I do have tutorials online at my website, but they are downloadable PDFs.

  • what's better for coloring photoshop or Corel Painter?

  • For me it's Painter, but it all depends of what you feel more comfortable with. Some people do amazing stuff with Photoshop too.

  • People should realize that there's nothing wrong with male and male, female and female couples, they're as natural as straight couples. Perhaps, we should focus more on the ART, instead of the subjects. You know, how the line art is very clean, and how the coloring reflects the artist's preference and style, etc..

  • @Makilore the subject is a part of the art. if they were to judge the art in whole, they have to consider the subject as well. if not, what will the art be about?

  • how can i get the tool boox on the right...but not the color mixer or layer the other one ? >.> please

  • Check the Window menu on Painter and select "Brush Controls > Show General". Or simply select "Arrange Palettes > Default". It should also bring the default windows up, then you can just organize them as you wish.

  • where do you get you pictures from that you color

  • I ahve a question LaraYokoshima, how can i keep the lineart or made teh lineart like this?

  • Um, I don't quite understand your question... what exactly do you want to know?

  • How I put this... how can I make the lineart expressive.

  • I don't know... really. Look, I don't mean to be rude, but unless it's some sort of technical question, I cannot give you a good answer. I don't think anyone can teach how to become an artist, you just have to learn for yourself and practice a lot. Your question is rather vague.

  • You are not rude no problem, I'm not quite good to make questions soo it's normal you answeering that way I undrestand.

  • No offense taken. If you read descriptions more often, you would know that it is a guy and that this is a shonen-ai themed drawing.

  • which tool do you use to rotate the picture while coloring?

  • Um, the rotate tool.

  • yeah XD but where's it located? sorry for asking such dumb questions..

  • On the tool window where the open hand is, keep pressing and the rotating tool should appear there, or just press the E key.

  • what did you do to bring out your lines at 1:00??

  • @ekd4594 Had to set the layer to multiply mode since it wasn't looking so good when I started coloring the dark hair :P

  • ooh~, thank you very much!

  • *clapclapclap

    awesome artwork

  • by the way, for this particular drawing, did you do your lineart digitally or otherwise? O:

  • Digitally.
