dang for how high this song is for belters and how good every elphaba has performed this song i cant believe that SJB (before she went on 8 shows a week) that this song was a step higher that would have been like very hard to do 8 times a week wouldnt you agree!?
Did you hear that applause? Did you hear it?! I watched that retarted Avenue Q song, and it sucked. I mean, how did the Muppets win against something like THAT. Sure, it got some applase...but I repeat--DID YOU HEAR THAT?! They were cheering through the whole song, not just at the end. Even when Idina says her line at the beginning, she got applause. By the end, these people were cheering like they were at a rock concert. So my conclusion is--WHAT HAPPENED at the 2004 Tony Awards???!!!
@elphabagalindafiyero I believe that both shows are amazing, but the right show won the Tony. To judge Avenue Q by one song is very wrong. The show is hilarious, and appeals to people on a much broader level than Wicked does. People I know who have never loved a musical in their life fell in love with Avenue Q because the characters are easy to identify with, the music is awesome, and the show is flat out hilarious. Wicked is definitely amazing as well though.
@elphabagalindafiyero Idnia did totally butchered the phrasing. If Eden Espinosa or Stephanie J Block were Elphaba, it probably would have won. But don't be dissing Avenue Q. It's hilarious.
@gmr2broadway Yeah this wasn't the best she has ever done but it didn't sound flat to me except the part near the end...but it was obvious she wasn't getting enough of a breath while she was singing so it didn't sound great, just good.
@gmr2broadway I was thinking the same. I'm wondering if she was sick or something because she usually sounds out of this WORLD. It's not completely distracting, but I did notice it. I was more thrown by her breath control o__o She sounded like she was gasping for air lol
seriously, how the F did Avenue Q win that year???? it makes absolutely NO SENSE!!! an amazing show like this, and the one that takes home the prize includes puppets LITERALLY getting it on while on stage!!! can we say NC-17?
It seems like you people are assuming that I don't think she is incredible, that the song is amazing, the musical is genius, or that I am not empathetic to her asthma or how nervous she must have been. I was simply commenting on this particular performance which I don't think was her best.
I wish this show was on more tony award shows because dumb ass shows like "Lion King", "Hairspray" and "Rent", have been at the award shows MANY times but wicked hasn't.
i'm in musical theatre, and when i don't breathe my voice sounds like crap and there isn't any power. it's a law of (defying) gravity that you *have* to breathe, especially for a song as emotionally powerful as this.
Why is indina breathing that loud? Should't she have been teached not to do so?

As much as I love Idina Menzel, she kind of has crazy eyes when she's singing. Definitely not one for the closeups.

@eh442 its the emotion that she brings to the performance! I think facial expressions really add to a show! :)

Idina is talented... but that was downright painful. She was so incredibly flat... can you guys not hear that?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
She got behind of the music and she's a bit out of key. She seems nervous.
drsteinke1 2 years ago
she had an asthma attack right before this =(
714fearless 2 years ago
thats the point she is nervous and scared of the citizens coming to get her. Later in the song she becomes stronger
Moconnor834 2 years ago
DUH!!! she IS nervous. it's a lot of pressure, and she is just an amazing actress. she so deserved to win that award.

Wicked should of won a Tony Award for Best Musical instead of Avenue Q. It's rigged.

wow, then any annoying comments I may have said I take back,
If she had an asthma attack before then, well done to her it was a really good performance in that case
