The first truck I ever drove! ( Not counting the the Ford 9000 a friend of my dad let drive down the highway at age 14 from behind the wheel at 2 a.m. on a Saturday morning from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids. :-) )
Im lookin at a 1980 Transtar thats single axle with no sleeper. has a 290 cummins with a 10 speed. its a solid lookin old truck, iv gotta get batteries and throw in it so i can start it to hear it run before i buy it but we had a 2070A truck once with a 290 in it and i loved it.
My dad used to own a '72 IH Transtar cab-over with the sleeper back way back when...I remember a few excursions I took with him...Dammned if it didn't feel like riding in the front end of a bus, only a little higher...
At 1:35 The one with tilted cab is not Transtar but Unistar CO 7044, more powerful than Transtar, with 4WD and a removable rear axle. I don't know how many units were made but I'm sure that they were very few.
Found me a late 70's Transtar in the local trader paper. 200K miles, 8V92T, excellent original condition...basically as nice as you could expect to find. And...for $5000. I'm very tempted.
Awesome vid!!! When we moved out here to Oregon from Maryland in '79, The Global Van Lines semi trailer that hauled our stuff was pulled by an IH Transtar sleeper cab COE, Awesome rigs!!!
4:15 I like the old gmc astro in that pic also them and the IHC transtar to me these were very well built trucks! didn't most of the old transtars from the 70's had 290 cummins in them?? I know some had the 400 but they're the same engine as the 290. I never seen one with a cat or detroit in them.
sad that the older trucks are gonna dissapear and get changed for the new plastic ones...love the older stuff with the chrome. i like the one at 1;50 and 3;20 the most. nice vid fumess! 5stars
I loved that Australian "Road Train" Model!! About how many of those were built and were they constructed in Australia and or New Zealand? And does I-H still maintain plants over there?
Loved the North American Van Lines pics. North American was broken into 3 divisions: 1) Bedbuggers, 2) Electronics, and 3) New Products. My father worked in new products starting in 1976. Something I never understood, in new products (van freight) you had to have a single back axle truck, due to taxes. I guess with the old weight limits, the single axle didn't hurt you. I was glad when he quit and bought a K100 but I still have a place in my heart for the old International COE.
yes they did make a big bunk i think from 66 to 76 they where the small bunk and from 77 till 81 they were big bunks and u can tale by the big bunks by the sleeper vent window has no ring around it its a smooth cab were as the small cab vent window sets in with a ring
there's always been something really creepy about the cabovers, especially the bullnose...idk but they kinda scare me for some reason...but i like them...
I checked it out your right its a bigger sleeper. Might be a custom job. Thats the only one I ever seen, you think they would have sold more than one of them.
where did they all go ? i still think they were a nice looking truck very tight on the inside . i spent alot of time in them as akid and when i started driving in 1983
And lot of owner operator still like the cabover but wish they made a bigger sleeper something like a 100 to 120" on 260"wheel base.Something like a trucking highway camper.Clime out then clime back in from the side.
I made a lot of money in a 1975 "one legged" Transtar and a shiny 290 cummins, hauling sticks from Ky and NC to eastern US. it was a time when "buttons, pump shims, and big cams, could make a single stack blow blue flames, that was fun, but, no power steering, poor heat and almost no A/C, and most of your sleeping was over the doghouse. and nothing but AM radio. but like I said I made a lot of money.
When I drove it for my friend. I had him put new tires on it and battery's. one Year later I bought it from him for $2000..The front end is tight (no wobble) the rest is in very good shape too. Heck the 8 track even works....
Thanks guys. I have driven a lot of cab overs in my past and I have to admit that, The transtars will always be in my heart. The orange one at 2:20 was my dads. also the one that I spent most of my childhood jump seat time in. The blue and white one @ 3:30 is mine. I bought it from a friend of mine and I'm the forth owner. It spent most of its life in southern Fla. then up here it was parked in a warehouse at all times.
Thanks guys. I know about the bumps of the cab overs. I too drove many of them. the orange one at 2:20 was my dads and the blue and white one with the fifth wheel at 3:30 is mine. I'll do a couple more when I get time. I have about 1500 transtar pictures alone......
Very nice... I was going to do one just like this but my vid was over 10 min long so youtube wouldnt let me upload it... And yes i had over 10 minutes long of just transtar pics!!! 5/5
