@MrMeowmeowthecat if you look at guitar, its just the wooden bits inbetween the metal lines. SO the first fret is the bit between the top of the guitar and the first metal line.

This is easier but in the wrong key. You need a capo to do it correctly.

For all those people without capo's I just use a laurentien marker (because it's straight across) and hold it down with 2 thick pony tails. It works pretty awesome!

2 options.

1. get one, trust me, if you are going to playing guitar at all acoustically, lots of songs use capos, highly recommended.

2. BAR CHORDS.

pain in the ass, but a good tool to learn.

note, bar chords most usually cant replace a capo.

Just thought I would let you know that the song is played with the Capo on the First Fret Not the Third fret. You are write about the chord positions but if you have the capo onn the 3rd fret you can't do the solo .. Check out the video of Tom Petty's Free Falling he is playing it with the capo on the 1st fret

It's just like the regular A, but you move your ring finger down to the 3rd fret instead of the 2nd fret

very good man another way to play it is to finish off after the D, Dsus, D then take off your middle finger for the D chord and play that..sounds pretty good too!
