The land owner is only using it as a "tax writeoff" to off set any gains he may have accumulated over the past year. It is a common practice. Where I used to live, there was a building that was occupied for over 35 years. The land owner is only waiting to sell the land to the City at a profit.
Horowitz rests on his laurels abt "entitlement", but what has he done with that land to help and improve the area? He is the epitome of the arrogant, ugly American that is so abt winning that nothing makes sense. The Garden was beautiful&useful. He was even offered his asking price for it, much more than he had paid. He was, and no doubt still is, a big, amoral, asshole who enjoys pushing hardworking, poor people around. He is such a wimp, he used namecalling as excuse to renege on deal he made.
Excuse, but the sale of the land back to the owner was very suspect, why wasn't it made public so that other potential buyers could bid on it? To sell back to the original owner under the table isn't the American way I was taught. These people were trying to be self-sufficient in providing their own food, good quality food. They weren't behaving out of entitlement, perhaps as new immigrants, out of ignorance of the way to do things, but not entitlement.

Here's the facts: The land was taken from the original owner under eminent domain and when the city didn't know what to do with the land after their plans for an incenerator were blocked and the riots destroyed the neighborhood, they said "look, have a garden". Well, the day came when the original owner got his land back and he said yall gotta go. The illegals got violent, racist and reactionary in the name of "injustice". Buy your own land, no one owes you free land.
First: Who is the first illegal here? The city that sells something illegally???? The one that buys illegally?? c'mon THis is where you can see SELFISHNESS in it's WHOLE. I just can feel pity for Horowitz !!!!
This is so upsetting. I googled the location (41st & Alameda in Los Angeles) to see if the garden was still there and was SO bummed to find two huge lots of dirt. The 12-year-old, 14 acre garden was bulldozed. I can guarantee that the only reason this garden was even an issue was because of $. The city knew that a large amount of people were living off of this land instead of buying their food in stores. Pure bullshit.
This should be a model for all urban cities, NOT something to be torn down and obliterated. This is progress people! Not another way to make a buck. This is true community building.

My father taught me that a truly decent man keeps his word. That was the kind of businessman he was.
