wow, i mean, i have a couple of shirts laying on the floor in my room with an empty lunchable by my bed and thought that was bad, but this is a billion times worse.
The stupid thing about this show is that they need to just tell the person to leave the house for a week, throw all the crap away, and bring them back and start from scratch. Letting the person sift through it all will NEVER work!
I saw this happen to a friend of mine.. he had a really nice house then he started going to the goodwill around the corner and buying a couple of bags of stuff every day.. within a year you couldn't walk through his house. It was awful and I quit hanging around him because it was so bad. There were just little paths through his house and whole rooms you couldn't go in. He had a second house on his property that was empty and he started filling it up. Every bit as bad as these shows.
How many nasty ass ppl who are too selfish to even throw garbage away do you have to see before you have pretty much seen it all? None of this is really surprising or unique
@cashyaug Amen to that is makes me sick to hear how everyone pampers and coddles these selfish asses like they are victims of cancer and cannot help it. They are just extremely selfish. When did being an asshole become a fucking disease? 99% of their problem is someone does not stand up to them. That would not happen in my house PERIOD!
@211GD They dont deserve to have kids either. Can you imagine being forced to live like that? Why does the state not step and and SAVE the kids? They stick their nose in when they are not needed.
Hoarding is an inability to throw belongings away, right? Does that include trash too? There's so many things in there she can't possibly want like used food packaging that she could easily just toss out.
I think hoarders do this out of fear more than anything else. Yes, some of it does stem from plain old laziness, but more often than not, these people are scared. A single issue or crisis might trigger the scare---or a number of problems could set it off.
Hoarders are selfish. Period. They don't think about the welfare or the mental health of the people who live around them. They deserve to have their families abandon them.
Admittedly, I have a hoarding tendency of my own. I tend to hoard papers, books & magazines. The only difference between myself and the really SERIOUS hoarders is degree. I haven't let the stuff literally engulf my person or life, and I hope I never will. From what I've seen on past TV shows & on these YouTube videos just now, the consequences would be way too dire.
I know there is a perceived difference between hoarding and being lazy, but to what extent?? Every house I see appears to me to be a very obvious mix of both
They will have all their 'valuables' stacked against the wall, but they will also have piles of dirty dishes, filthy clothes and plain garbage thrown all over the place
I know many are too quick to dismiss the hoarder's personal issues, but many others are just as quick to start listing out a bunch of cliched excuses for them
@CyanoticFuture actually a kick to the face would do nothing for these people, I know because my mother and brother are hoarders. Most of them are mentally or emotionally ill. They have Obsessive Compulsive disorder....a fairly common disorder. Their obsessive behavior manifests itself in the form of hoarding...as opposed to someone who has the same disorder but checks the locks on their door 100 times a day (instead of hoarding)....pretty phucked up I admit
@inkey2 I feel for ya my mom was a bit of a hoarder she would keep things there broken or flat served no purpose after time and time of trying to clean things and having someone scream at you and freak over say a broken toaster one gets to the point they give up. Just feel defeated before the day even begins.

@ElectricShark I have to disagree with you , In alot of these cases people have their houses covered in Cat shit ... hoarding all the cats and objects /trinkets might be apart of a disorder (maybe). Being too friggen lazy to clean up after the animals is just that ..selfish laziness . They aren't looking to collect cat shit ...they just don't have the gumption to pick it up and dispose of it because they are nasty as hell and lazy
I have a question. First I'll tell you what I've seen. I have run across this show probably 5 or 6 times and watched about 15 minutes of it each time. I'll switch the channel and the go back in a few minutes to see what the "after" looks like. Here is my question: Is there an after? Is this a show about how to clean a house that looks like a dump, literally? Or is this is about "Can you believe how nasty this is?" If they don't clean it, what's the point of showing the before?
@loufalce You don't see that these people are sick? This show is complete bullshit anyway television is bullshit, it's ALL about makeing the veiwer feel superior. In this case, it worked. You have fed into this shitty plot. Congrats.
I get that it's a mental thing and whatever - but seriously? These people should NOT be allowed to own their own homes, have children, pets, etc... it's disgusting!! I know it's "their house" and it's "their mess" - but the ones with shit and mice and dead animals all over the house - just remember, they DO go out in public and open doors and push shopping carts, etc.... nasty.
So when are they going to do a show about trollers who post bullshit comments on youtube like they know what they're talking about? Yeah I know, I'd be on the first episode!
people who are so called trash horders are just as they say on the show.. l a z y.. they are looking for an excuse for attention and help and disability.. then they get mad an upset if the state comes and takes the children out of the home. or they use the excuse of being hurt as a child, or mom/dad dying. or sexual abuse.. see i dont and wont fall for that.. its a choice to change your life. not to feel sorry for your self..
@alaitain It's a mental disorder. I agree it's something that can be changed and isn't permanent, but it's not something you can just throw money at to make go away or wave a magic wand at. It requires more than that.
Some people do not deserve to be home-owners. There are many people who have nothing and it looks like this once beautiful home is wasted, filled with one persons massed posessions.
Hoarding is a western phenomenon brought on by mass consumption and greed. Suggesting it is an illness is just an excuse and an insult to true needy people of the world..
My Mother is a hoarder. My siblings have no contact with her anymore. My husband and I have tried to help her clean up but it's always an excuse not too.I don't want to get rid of these things because..One day I will do those crafts, One day I will fix that chair, One day I will use thoses tables at a party. These items are too good to toss, she may need it later at some imagined time for an imagined event etc. If you try to remove things she becomes violent.
@TerrorNoxArcana - my mother would hate me then. Because I'd take her crap and throw it out and not care what excuse she gave. Some of the stuff is OBVIOUS trash and you don't need premission to haul that away.
@TrixieBelaire I understand exactly what you're saying, but the problem is most of these people are truly mentally ill. My mom-in-law is one of these. The kids did a full clean and threw stuff out. She had a fullblown mental break down. She's now in a senior assisted situation - has to keep things fairly minimal. Her parents died when she was 16. She survived a fire that took everything they had. She has this fear of being "left with nothing". Trashing things didn't solve the main issues.
@BluBay39 - So as far as the show though, do they film these people because they are offering them free psychiatric help? And then go back periodically to see if the progress? I asked in an earlier comment "What is the point of the show?" Is it just to say Wow, look how sick some people are - take a look at how they live. Or are they offered help and we get to see someone pulled out of their illness and squaller? If you show suffering on tv - have a plan. It's not entertainment.
That's where the mystery seems to be. Is it past trauma or a physical brain dysfunction like schizophrenia?
Most of the people I've seen on the series were not always that way but became more pronounced when they got older and found themselves alone. But then there were also the younger, married ones who literally drove their spouses away with their dysfunction.
If that fool wants to live with all that shit, that is her problem. Just call health and welfare on her. Let the law handle it. Why on earth would anybody want to keep a used pizza box for years?
It's more than "they just need to clean up" It's a manifestation of what's going on on the inside of them emotionally/mentally. Very sad. Abandonement issues as well. They know that "things" don't or can't leave you, you can hold on to "things"
Logically they know there's a problem, they can "see" it, but they feel helpless and "buried alive" (just like the title of the show) When you let it get that bad you feel like your at the "point of no return" so you just keep doin it.
i just thought i would comment one more thing. I think we all have it in us to over indulge and then when it becomes overwhelming we call it a disease. My father was a drunk he wanted to quit. He did it the old fashion its called white knuckling it. sheer will power and the guts to face reality. A social worker would say its the wrong way but i say OH yes YOU can. its the best way. the only way. you think for your self. she was in over head. Her poor kids. too bad
@butters174 I agree with what you said. People go through slow, comfortable methods of getting rid of a disease, or drug addiction and IMO it's bull shit! You need to "feel the pain" of trying to "kick it" like heroine...Also agressive therapy for something like this so you won't easily fall back into it.
If you remember a "not so bad experience" coming off drugs for ex, what's gona stop you from goin right back to it? that's why the constant relapse's. You need to suffer to stop altogether.
My mom is a hoarder. It is a disease. A selfish one too. As kids, we couldn't bring anyone home. We were so ashamed of our place. The only places that were clean were our bedrooms. I remember throwing stuff away in my garbbage can and find the same stuff in my mother's room. It strained relationships too. My siblings and I haven't set foot in my mother's place in years. The kids don't get to spend the night at their grandma'ss either because it's not safe or sanitary. The whole place stinks.
@atlasshrugged2u We were not allowed to touch anything. Thank God, the trash was always taken out. We would toss stuff away while she was away and hope that she wouldn't notice. Half of the time she did though and would go the dumpser to get her stuff back. She would get panic attacks over it. It's gotten worse since we all left. Luckily, my siblings and I are really clean. We hate stuff and don't keep anything. You know it's a disease when your parent chooses stuff over you.
@fahlou13 Yeah. Wow, I am so sorry. Have you guys tried to get her help?...I know it's expensive. It's just such a shame. I wonder If she sees it's a problem and has ever tried to change?...
@atlasshrugged2u Actually help would be free, but I'm now realizing that she just doesn't want to do the work that it takes to get better. She is cognizant of her issues. She just doesn't care enough to do anything about it. She has some unresolved childhood issues. We've been hearing about it since we were kids, We've all been very sympathetic but in order to keep our sanity, we've decided to let go of trying to change her. The help is there. She just needs to take it, but she doesn't want to.
Does she ever come over for Holidays with you guys and the grands? If so How can she look at how clean and well adjusted your homes are and not want that...It's truly a mystery. You sound like youv'e excepted it though which is great. I know you must have gone thriugh Hell as a kid. You abviously love and care for her, but at the same time your not goin to hold up your life, or stress about it which is the right thing.
@atlasshrugged2u She does come over and yes you would think she'd want a clean house as well. I offer to buy her new furniture and to help her decorate her place IF she tossed her crap. It never happened. When we see a clean place, it makes us feel good, when she does, it makes her feel empty that's the problem. They define themselves by how much stuff they have. We understand her disease, but it doesn't completely take away our frustration. Gotta go bed, nice chatting with you!
@fahlou13 Good night honey. And Good luck! I wish you all the best and will be praying for your family, promise. (I know people just say that, but I really will)
@fahlou13 try to never throw away stuff without her permission.that ruins the confidence she has in her family, and if she feels unsupported she will never trust you enough to help her deal with her hoarding issue
have you ever taken her on vacation away from home?maybe visiting another country would help her to get another perspective of life and see things in other way. the money she spends buying useless stuff can be well spent on vacationing and spending quality family time
@divacat80 Most of the stuff she has actually came from people who have no idea about her condition. She still has clothes from 30 years+ ago in case she loses weight; meds that expired in the 80s but keeps them in case the doctor asks about it, recipe books (she doesn't cook), etc.. She has a very backward thinking and really needs therapy, but she doesn't want to do it. It's frustrating, but we're learning to detach ourselves from this so we don't get resentful. Thanks for your best wishes.
My grandmother’s a hoarder, pretty much like this. It’s ridiculous, and she refuses to part with anything. She just moves crap around from one area to another. If her problem were laziness, however, then her apartment would be a lot cleaner: She’d have let us haul out most of that garbage years ago. Indeed, most lazy folks would be against drowning in a sea of their own clutter. Hoarding is a symptom of mental illness; and as such, it’s not precisely a choice.
I understand what hoarding is like, considering I'm also a frugal person and get emotionally attached to objects. But I know my limits and force myself to clear things out. They act like it's a medical condition - and it might be a mental issue - but really, it's just common sense. When you realize how much you have, clean it out.
mental disease LLLAAAAAAZZZZYYY your just fucking lazy who lets people walk all over you. your pathetic. you need a fresh start like people who claim bankruptcy who blame it on other people or say I OCD i have to shop. oh my goodness you know what just stay pathetic. america just keep doing what your the worlds going down down. My two unfavorite things is debt why pay now when you can pay later and WAIT I'll do it later. I am not in any debt because i am smart AND THINK REALITY.
@butters174...JESUS CHRIST MONKEY BALLS!!! I have never heard such a good point in my entire life. But you know what is even more annoying?... When people say they have a sex addiction.
what its real easy to pretend its not there? OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH MMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYyyyyy God people like you return shit? from your house. just stay in debt please. you'll pass around bed bugs and what not. you cant even piss in your house. what about your children how do they bathe where do they eat how do they look and smell for school you are lazy lazy lazy!!! people like who take advantage of the government or tax payers dollars need to be exsposed more often and pay a price like JAIL
Something this gay hasn't come out since Justin Bieber's last singl;).(SERIOUSLY).
These people are so fucking pathetic it makes me sick. All they do is ruin their house's on purpose just so they can get on T.V and pitty from wealthy pig fucking mongering citizens who want too make them selves beleive they have some sort of moarles.
Hoarding is not a disease...it is self inflicted life choice by which these low lives choose too live because they didn't go to college let alone High Shool.
I feel like I'm going to be like this one day. everything i own i feel has sentimental value in one way or another and most of it doesn't. i have boxes and boxes of junk that i dont need or use or want. i just keep. i feel like i need it.
I once met a person who has anti-hoarding behavior. Her house is 95% empty, even after one year of living there. No bed, some furniture, less than 10 dishes and bowls. I am guessing her wardrobe is 60% empty. I actually like it. It is very clean and spacious.
My parents are hoarders, and iwas raised like that, and when i met my boyfriend 3 years ago.....he litterally shoveled the house out with me while my parents were on vacation. they were pissed, but..really you cant reason with them, jsut do it. they always wanted it cleaned, but always "sorted" aka did nothing. now they have a friend of mine come over every week and straighten up for like $50. (i moved away from home soon after the clean) we threw out litterally 1.9 TONS of garbage at the dump
@LuckyClover678 People might not even know she's like this. Most hoarders know their behavior isn't normal, so they probably don't invite people over out of embarassment. My mom is a hoarder and we never have anyone come over to our house. We haven't since I was a little kid. It doesn't stop people from giving her stuff. Especially if she can pick it up at their house.
@pinz2022 yer right , most of the hoarders ive seen have been white , kinda like on animal planet 80-90 % of the animal starvation cases (not hoarding but just having 1 or 2 animals ) and starving them half to death have been black people. Strange huh
There is difference between a 'collector' and an out-right slob! This woman is to lazy to even throw out the kleenex that is laying on the bathroom floor!! What a disease infested germ breeding ground!! It should be quaranteened!!
@candyberriche - See, I never understood the desire to "collect" either. I've just never had an interest in having a bunch of "Stuff" to just sit around and look at. That pin just never fired in my brain to want to own a bunch of basically worthless crap.
@ShallAnnDara yes some people are checkers always making sure doors are locked and whatnot some people wash their hands and shower alot some people are neat / organazation freaks and hoarding is not being able too get rid of anything or always needing stuff
@transdrole - I have kind of thought that before. If a friend came over and took a box full of junk out and dumped it....would the person really know the difference? Or if a teenager living there just said "No, not in my room" and hauled all the crap out of his or her room....what is the parent going to do? Really? Nothing, that's what.
What part of the phrase "compulsive disorder" don't you grasp? You might as well be asking "Why can't an alcoholic just stop at 1 beer, or drink juice instead?" Obviously, it's not that simple.
>> "Easy. Hire a dump truck and haul it all to the dump." [nobleheight]
And good luck getting a compulsive hoarder to agree with that, let alone in one sitting. You'd have just as much luck taking a heroin needle away from the hands of a junkie.

I know it's "their house" and it's "their mess" - but the ones with shit and mice and dead animals all over the house - just remember, they DO go out in public and open doors and push shopping carts, etc.... nasty.

people who are so called trash horders are just as they say on the show.. l a z y.. they are looking for an excuse for attention and help and disability.. then they get mad an upset if the state comes and takes the children out of the home. or they use the excuse of being hurt as a child, or mom/dad dying. or sexual abuse.. see i dont and wont fall for that.. its a choice to change your life. not to feel sorry for your self..

It's a living nighmare
TerrorNoxArcana 1 year ago
@TerrorNoxArcana - my mother would hate me then. Because I'd take her crap and throw it out and not care what excuse she gave. Some of the stuff is OBVIOUS trash and you don't need premission to haul that away.
TrixieBelaire 1 year ago
@TrixieBelaire I understand exactly what you're saying, but the problem is most of these people are truly mentally ill. My mom-in-law is one of these. The kids did a full clean and threw stuff out. She had a fullblown mental break down. She's now in a senior assisted situation - has to keep things fairly minimal. Her parents died when she was 16. She survived a fire that took everything they had. She has this fear of being "left with nothing". Trashing things didn't solve the main issues.
BluBay39 1 year ago
@BluBay39 - So as far as the show though, do they film these people because they are offering them free psychiatric help? And then go back periodically to see if the progress? I asked in an earlier comment "What is the point of the show?" Is it just to say Wow, look how sick some people are - take a look at how they live. Or are they offered help and we get to see someone pulled out of their illness and squaller? If you show suffering on tv - have a plan. It's not entertainment.
TrixieBelaire 1 year ago 3
@BluBay39
That's where the mystery seems to be. Is it past trauma or a physical brain dysfunction like schizophrenia?
Most of the people I've seen on the series were not always that way but became more pronounced when they got older and found themselves alone. But then there were also the younger, married ones who literally drove their spouses away with their dysfunction.
pinz2022 1 year ago
If that fool wants to live with all that shit, that is her problem. Just call health and welfare on her. Let the law handle it. Why on earth would anybody want to keep a used pizza box for years?
hiiamrick 1 year ago
It's more than "they just need to clean up" It's a manifestation of what's going on on the inside of them emotionally/mentally. Very sad. Abandonement issues as well. They know that "things" don't or can't leave you, you can hold on to "things"
Logically they know there's a problem, they can "see" it, but they feel helpless and "buried alive" (just like the title of the show) When you let it get that bad you feel like your at the "point of no return" so you just keep doin it.
Very sad.
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
i just thought i would comment one more thing. Her poor kids. too bad
butters174 1 year ago
@butters174 I agree with what you said. People go through slow, comfortable methods of getting rid of a disease, or drug addiction and IMO it's bull shit! You need to "feel the pain" of trying to "kick it" like heroine...Also agressive therapy for something like this so you won't easily fall back into it.
If you remember a "not so bad experience" coming off drugs for ex, what's gona stop you from goin right back to it? that's why the constant relapse's. You need to suffer to stop altogether.
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
My mom is a hoarder. It is a disease. A selfish one too. As kids, we couldn't bring anyone home. We were so ashamed of our place. The only places that were clean were our bedrooms. I remember throwing stuff away in my garbbage can and find the same stuff in my mother's room. It strained relationships too. My siblings and I haven't set foot in my mother's place in years. The kids don't get to spend the night at their grandma'ss either because it's not safe or sanitary. The whole place stinks.

@fahlou13 Wow! Im so sorry you have to go through that. I couldn't imagine. Did you guys not have to do chores growing up?...
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
@atlasshrugged2u We were not allowed to touch anything. Thank God, the trash was always taken out. We would toss stuff away while she was away and hope that she wouldn't notice. Half of the time she did though and would go the dumpser to get her stuff back. She would get panic attacks over it. It's gotten worse since we all left. Luckily, my siblings and I are really clean. We hate stuff and don't keep anything. You know it's a disease when your parent chooses stuff over you.
fahlou13 1 year ago
@fahlou13 Yeah. Wow, I am so sorry. Have you guys tried to get her help?...I know it's expensive. It's just such a shame. I wonder If she sees it's a problem and has ever tried to change?...
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
@atlasshrugged2u Actually help would be free, but I'm now realizing that she just doesn't want to do the work that it takes to get better. She is cognizant of her issues. She just doesn't care enough to do anything about it. She has some unresolved childhood issues. We've been hearing about it since we were kids, We've all been very sympathetic but in order to keep our sanity, we've decided to let go of trying to change her. The help is there. She just needs to take it, but she doesn't want to.
fahlou13 1 year ago
@fahlou13 When your right your right!
They have to "want" to change.
Does she ever come over for Holidays with you guys and the grands? If so How can she look at how clean and well adjusted your homes are and not want that...It's truly a mystery. You sound like youv'e excepted it though which is great. I know you must have gone thriugh Hell as a kid. You abviously love and care for her, but at the same time your not goin to hold up your life, or stress about it which is the right thing.
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
@atlasshrugged2u She does come over and yes you would think she'd want a clean house as well. I offer to buy her new furniture and to help her decorate her place IF she tossed her crap. It never happened. When we see a clean place, it makes us feel good, when she does, it makes her feel empty that's the problem. They define themselves by how much stuff they have. We understand her disease, but it doesn't completely take away our frustration. Gotta go bed, nice chatting with you!
fahlou13 1 year ago
@fahlou13 Good night honey. And Good luck! I wish you all the best and will be praying for your family, promise. (I know people just say that, but I really will)
atlasshrugged2u 1 year ago
@fahlou13 try to never throw away stuff without her permission.that ruins the confidence she has in her family, and if she feels unsupported she will never trust you enough to help her deal with her hoarding issue
have you ever taken her on vacation away from home?maybe visiting another country would help her to get another perspective of life and see things in other way. the money she spends buying useless stuff can be well spent on vacationing and spending quality family time
good luck, really
divacat80 1 year ago
@divacat80 Most of the stuff she has actually came from people who have no idea about her condition. She still has clothes from 30 years+ ago in case she loses weight; meds that expired in the 80s but keeps them in case the doctor asks about it, recipe books (she doesn't cook), etc.. She has a very backward thinking and really needs therapy, but she doesn't want to do it. It's frustrating, but we're learning to detach ourselves from this so we don't get resentful. Thanks for your best wishes.
fahlou13 1 year ago

@LuckyClover678 People might not even know she's like this. Most hoarders know their behavior isn't normal, so they probably don't invite people over out of embarassment.
