This movie was doomed from the beginning. The director did not have experience filming abroad and the crew had so many problems with street gangs who at one point demanded something like 50,000 dollars. It could have been a great movie with a setting in 1930's China. So many people say that Madonna and Sean are what made the movie flop but with poor direction the two of them really didn't have much of a chance with this film.

Oh come on! This movie wasn't so bad. Yes, first 30-35 minutes are boring but later this movie becomes better and better. I said so because Shanghai Surprise has so many haters.

Madonna is so beautiful and hot here. Maybe I'm crazy but I really love this movie. (sorry for my english)

madonna's stunningly beautiful in this movie! i'm watching it right now and all her features are hypnotically perfect. i also noticed the box cover's description has an error. says the movie's set in 1937 but only 1st few minutes are. the rest takes place a year later.

This is so peculiar: The movie SUCKED, the 2 leads gave BAD performances, but you CAN'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THEM. Is that what they call "star quality"? BTW, the song is LOVELY.
