  • :o awesome song and meaning

  • i've noticed people saying that the video is random. it's far from random. every snippet is relevant to the themes of the song. watch a video like 'what makes you beautiful' by one direction. parking by a beach and then suddenly bursting into song for no apparent reason to then be conveniently accompanied by five good looking women. now that is fucking random.

  • I'm beginning to think PJ Harvey might even be better than Patti Smith. This is a pretty phenomenal record for an eighth album.

  • @LiamCrowley1990 Funny you should mention Patti Smith. This is what she posted on her blog last year. She got the album title wrong, but, never mind!

    HAIL HARVEY

Polly Harvey has a great new song from her forth coming album England Shaking.

Here is the beautifully shot Seamus Murphy video.

Where shall we take our problems......

  • @LiamCrowley1990 And in an interview for The Guardian: "[I've been] listening to Polly Harvey's new song - she has this new song, 'The Words That Maketh Murder' - what a great song.

"It just makes me happy to exist. Whenever anyone does something of worth, including myself, it just makes me happy to be alive. So I listened to that song all morning, totally happy."

  • una mujer simplemente genial¡¡

  • When I saw this video over a year ago and heard snippets of her album I said that she would win the Mercury. 6 months later her name was announced as the winner. WELL DESERVED. A CLASSIC ALBUM

  • LOL she's still rocking after all these years! GOod 2 see! I first turned on to her about 20yrs ago maybe longer! i still have the cassette "DRY" where's she's naked in a tub of water...

  • PJ is an acquired taste. When I first listened to her, I hated what I saw & heard. I didn't get the fuss. Then years later I saw her do something totally different on tv, and she even looked and sounded different. I thought I had confused her with someone else. After a bit more probing It dawned on me how good she is .She's certainly full of contrasts.

  • A lot of you are immensely stuck up about your love for PJ Harvey, saying how you are more open minded and more intelligence than people that listen to mainstream music. I'm not saying this is or isn't better, but liking this music doesn't make you a better person.

  • @33Pygmy Erhhhhhh? What? who says it does?......

  • I LOVE IT...! SHE'S BRILLIANT !

  • @levendsteentje You'll be pleased to know she listened to a lot of Neil Young as inspiration for the album. Late last year she was asked what current music she liked and she couldn't think of anything, she was still listening to Neil Young!

  • love. love. love. love.

  • She is brilliant live, and to each their own. For fucks sake.

  • @woland67 Yes. Seen her live 6 times. Faultless voice every time. Perfect at the Royal Albert Hall last October. Some dopey ones actually think the rehearsal clips are parts of the finished song. Seamus Murphy has said Polly encouraged him to keep the unflattering footage in. Seemed to be a lot of spineless, soulless, unimaginative, tuneless, corporate approved karaoke singers at The Brits this week.

  • I discovered her a minute ago after seeing a pic of her with Molko. I thought she looked cool and decided to check her out. I'm already in love. This is brilliant. <3

  • i only discovered pj harvey a year a ago and what i love about her music especially this album is how subtle it is. As in all her political opinions are so beautifully written and it's not in your face blah george bush is a stupid fucker (even though we know he is) its so cleverly written.

  • Not everyone is smart enough to understand how brilliant PJ Harvey is. One can only hope that people eventually will grow a brain.

  • @cbcastleberry Are you actually that arrogant or is this a failed attempt at ironic humour?

  • Just sublime, poetic voice!

  • lol @ all these mainstream pop 12 yr olds coming here because they heard about her on the brit awards bitching about how "weird her voice is!" this is called REAL music you twats! not the shite you listen to on the charts! You will never understand PJ Harvey and WE DON'T WANT YOU TO!

  • @sdfuy345 she is shite live i know.

  • @sdfuy345 hahaha amen to this !!

  • @sdfuy345 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH !! That is classic, couldn't have said it better and so true ........

  • @sdfuy345 Well I hate to be a snob but yeah, I'm not complaining if the wider world fail to get Polly. She can go on making great album after great album but it seems the pop kids will always leave her alone, and that's great. A national treasure of a very special kind.

  • @sdfuy345 Seriously! i think naked cousin is her best song, well its my favorite

  • @sdfuy345, I can tell you right now, I'm 13 years old, and I fucking love PJ Harvey. ;D

  • @sdfuy345 Yes we do want them to understand Polly and more. If they don't get her yet, they will at sometime soon. We need music to be all encompassing, not elitist! More the merrier, that way there will be a smaller market for the bland manufactured pop and a wider audience for beautifully crafted music.

  • the more i listen to Pj Harvey, the more i like her

  • Comment removed

  • @wiseooooooooooooo go away and listen to your one direction cd.

  • @pbsixtythree how about you go and suck you dead nan and listen to this shit you call music, i think i would rather have inbreded sex with my mum then listen to the shit that coming out of my ear phones

  • @wiseooooooooooooo ... you just wasted minutes of life writing a comment that no one gives a rats arse about. unfortunate

  • @wiseooooooooooooo wow! ..I usually respect opinions and tastes that other people have on music. I don´t know how kind of music you like, but my guess is that you probably just like normal mainstream pop. And that comment over here, just states that you are an ignorant narrow minded fuck that can´t appreciate music that is a little bit "different" from what you usually hear on the radio. ...maybe you are just young and stupid, and after few years you will realize how stupid you were.

  • @jakobsson85 OHHHHHHH BITCH WHY DONT GO BACK TO YOUR LIBRARY AND LISTEN TO THIS SHIT, this was my opinion if i want to call something shit i have every right to call something shit, you or know other fucker will stop me now, if you are as hold as i think you are two words you arrogant fat little man GET LAID

  • @wiseooooooooooooo And everyone has the right to tell you what a thick plonker you are. Very limited grasp of English you have.

  • @shelleyslions ERMMMMMMM sorry, i do apologies, you sour old goat, go back to your crap taste in music and ponder on the thought of me being better than you.

  • @wiseooooooooooooo Your spelling is getting better. Well done. You're attitude just shows everyone is better than you. Way, way better. You seem to be spending a lot of time checking up on music you don't like. This is easy; you're like a village idiot that everyone can take the rise out of.

  • @shelleyslions Spot the deliberate mistake: 'Your attitude'.

  • @wiseooooooooooooo haha what a great comeback...you didn´t got that right, I´m not fat and little nor have I been having trouble getting laid. Just because that I have standard for music, doesn´t mean that I am misereble and bitter.

  • @wiseooooooooooooo We should congratulate Whitney Houston on being sober for a week and a half! :)

  • it's really good when i heard this was really good i didn't believed it ,now i can see that i spend a fucking year without this master piece

  • You listen to music like this, passionate, political, emotive, moving, incredibly beautiful and the product of a true musical innovator, and compare it's relative lack of success next to mass produced mawkish maudlin dross like Adele and the state of world music seems more depressing than ever. Let England Shake is music writing worthy of Grammys, at least Mercury had the taste and intelligencce to award genius where genius was due.

  • The UN? Well, they didn' t help Eddie Cochran, so...

  • Innovative.

  • What in heavens is that instrument she's playing?

  • @theCobbMob3490 it's an autoharp ;)

  • kinda

  • Sounds like throwing muses

  • I love the nod to Eddie Cochran at the end.

  • Intersting....

  • exactly what i imagined the video to be like. perfect

  • video's good and random. Each situation puts you off.

  • I love this song, but this video is way too random

  • @knivesout33 That's why I like it! The bit with the ballroom dancers synchronises beautifully.

  • Fuckin BrILLIANT!!

  • OMG this song is soooo imazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • lazyfox80 your friends sucks :)

  • the rural stomp on this song could rebel rouse millions

  • What Joh Bjelke Peterson fails to have accomplished, Nick Kave seems to have managed in spades, trumps, hearts and diamonds: world recognition and fame. ~ To co-ordinate murder group function by issuing words of a sentence, a sentence then spoken by the progression of murder group newtwork members through channels and into & out of safe house loops is, of course, for the stoops: the ones those who first spake such sentences walk all over every time they are repeated.

  • @Lieu3C4 what?

  • Long LIVE LanadelRey!

  • @maxmawell wrong video

  • what if i take my problem to the united nations?

  • @kitttykat13 Simple: You get vetoed by Russia and China.

  • @fabienmengus more vise versa. check out the record of appeals and vetoes the US has enacted for Israel.

  • @raysondetre Based on what the person you replied to wrote, wouldn't vice versa be Russia and China getting vetoed by you?

  • b-b-b-bird bird bird the bird is the word

  • Cool song, loads of nice classic rock references. However does anyone else get an odd feeling that the backing vocals around 2:14 might as well be singing surfing bird?

  • Polly Jean, you haunt me.

  • this would be an epic hip hop sample! do it mr. west...

  • @MBtopdog I'm guessing you mean Kanye? I hear he has become a bit of a fan of Polly's.

  • @shelleyslions yes. and i'm talking about the part from 00:37 to 00:51. now imagine this with a huge baseline: booom tschack, boom boooom tschack...

  • wtf is this :S

  • @Gman333Xferrari wtf is this? It'a brilliant work of musical genius! Something you're teeny brain can't comprehend!

  • @tubbythug92 Funny that, because my "teeny brain" prefers proper music like The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin - not this retarded garbage. She sounds like a special needs kid. Seriously, listen to the bit at 1:21 and tell me this is "a brilliant work" with a straighrt face.

  • @Gman333Xferrari At 1:21 is amazing, especially with Pj's beautiful face! Lol oh how cliche your musical taste is. Make sure to expand your musical horizons! Oh wait..I forgot you have a teeny brain!

  • @tubbythug92 lol whatever, have a nice day.

  • @Gman333Xferrari Yep, peddle on brah, Pj is too good for you.

  • Comment removed

  • @Gman333Xferrari That's your music taste? How boring and predictable. I love all three of the bands you mentioned and have been listening to them since I was about 6, and even I know that bragging about it and calling them "proper music" is for elitist twats.

PS: I got chills at 1:21. Your argument is invalid.

  • Let England Shake is SO GOOD and a reminder that war is out of control WRONG and the war-mongers need to be challenged ALWAYS!!

  • Let England Shake is so much more than a pop record, it is a profound, brave work of art. Anything Mick Harvey gets involved in is brilliant too - for sure the best release of 2011 and maybe my favorite of the last 10 years

  • i love you Polly

  • love me some polly jean.

  • Beautiful and haunting song. Ms. Harvey gets better with age. To the cat that said she sounded like someone with Tourette's syndrome singing: you, my friend are hopelessly tone deaf.

  • objective reason why this song doesn't suck (beside all taste reasons).

the line "what if i take my problems to the united nations..." is also in a very old song (listen to Summertime Blues- Eddie Cochran)

more actual than ever, isn't it?

  • I love PJ Harvey and her giant mouth

  • I LOVE YOU, PJ!

  • love the video - great record

  • PJ Harvey is one of the most talented artist of today. i respect everyone opinion however people who are so quick to pan things they don't recognize irritate me. there is a message to the song pay attention to lyrics and notice when artist are using styles and sounds from the past to give a song a certain feel.. take your problems to the united nations. think about it. this is not one of my favorite pj songs but a least i get it. and i don't think it "sucks"

  • FUCK YOU CAMERON !!!

  • @billordo Come on, 'Avatar' wasn't *that* bad!

  • It is "the words that MAKE murder. "

'Maketh' is the archaic form of 'makes', but noone ever gets it right....I mean, it looks 'interesting' right, 'th' at the end of a word... ? Bleh!

  • REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brody dalle ftw.

  • Love PJ... If you want, check out my music...Im starting up...need the support :) from Auckland, New Zealand x

  • i like... it?

  • hmmm... what to say..

  • MUR_EER MER_FER MUR_0ER MUR_1ER MUR_2ER MUR_3ER MUR_4ER MUR_5ER MUR_6ER MUR_7ER MUR_8ER MUR_9ER MUR_AER MUR_BER MUR_CER MUR_DER

  • just saw her live two nights ago and blew mins away! this song rocked

  • @jtruscheit You lucky b* ;).... I hope I'll see her live one day....

  • This music is not of my taste, but I recognize this is a good song.

  • @paranoidchileno01 If only more people were as smart as you are.

  • I love this woman's music.

  • still amazing

  • sorry, i hated this song the first few times i heard it... but something happened... it has REALLY grown on me. i love it... i can't get it out of my head... i can't stop thinking about it.

  • eddie cochran already tried that, luv

  • oh shite its bigmouth again. pls make it stop.

  • wow wow & double wow!!!!!!!

  • At last a propper artist with something totally new. :)

  • @kezadrone at last? PJ harvey's been around for a Looooooong time

  • @PuddleBurger :D Ok At last someone has had the sense to post this new track online for all to see. :)

  • godable

  • I played this video for a friend. He responded with "This song sucks!" I asked him why he felt that way and he had no answer. I'm slightly disappointed in my friend.

  • @lazyfox80 I can tell you why I think it sux...

Not original, standard way of singing with that little sad-ish schmalzy voice, as if her life is a din of suffering...the not very inspired guitar playing; the depressive tones, the complete nuttiness of her way of singing; as if she isnt really supposed to be out of the asylum. The simple drum, the ....well, should I go on?

  • @dervishmadwhirler And I respect your opinion, at least you could give a logical reason as to why you don't like the song. All I was saying is that my friend could give no reasons. He simply said, "it sucks."

  • @lazyfox80 Isn't "it sucks" good enough? It's music, it's not objective. Do you have objective reasons to like this song except that "it's good"?

  • Comment removed

  • @DNoolan Of course I don't have any objective reasons. As you said, music isn't objective, it's subjective. This doesn't mean I can't be disappointed in my friend for not liking the song though.

  • @lazyfox80 Your friend is right. This song just sucks. Most people who claim to like it just do so to maintain their hip image.

  • @lazyfox80 Maybe your friend doesn't like it because it hasn't been fed to him 6 times a day by commercial radio?

  • Comment removed

  • @lazyfox80 i can totally understand that. PJ Harvey's talent invokes response from us that we don't normally do. and when someone else can't see what we can...it's natural to think we are looking at a Frankenstein!!!!!! ....................

  • @lazyfox80 it does kinda suck

  • @lazyfox80

    because it's girl's music.

  • Can't stop listening to this... What a fantsatic song.

  • Does anybody know what effect is on that acoustic guitar in the beginning?

  • @madeyes4u Just some reverb? And I'm not sure it's an acoustic guitar, but I wouldn't know.

  • @TheEloeo Maybe some delay too? And the more I've listened to the song, the more I think it's a zither. After all, she is holding one in the video...

  • Love it. One of the few artists that truly ... inspires... me. Makes me want to get back into making music, that is.

  • Witam polskich słuchaczy dobrej muzyki

  • Polska ;]

  • This video's (well both video and song) are pretty awesome.

  • stunning

  • This is fricking ace.

  • I love <3

  • LET ENGLAND SHAKE album of the year

  • Meh. Ill just go back to listing to machinedrums rooms.

  • The best song of the year!

  • @desarme yeah try again. something from the foo fighters album WASTING LIGHT perhaps.

  • @musiclover2161 yeah try again, MUSICAL OPINION

  • down by the water is a decent song. but this is just crazy boring.

  • Exceptional! It is sad how the star system is burying unconventional music but it is even sadder how the majority of the people has raised barriers to their musical interests (AND NOT ONLY)

  • @imrahilla Kind of been that way forever. Things come around after the fact, though. Why can't folks enjoy having something special and personal?

  • This is not how PJ usually sings. She's singing an octave higher than she normally does and in a sarcastic manner to emphasize the death scenes she's trying to convey. If you had followed her 20 year career you would have known that. She does sometimes do 'mainstream' sounding stuff but you'd have to go back some years.

    watch?v=mq_mxj3kKJQ

  • Not weird at all to my ears. Only seems weird to those whose ears are tuned to easy listening, mainstream crap.Just because Pj's music is usually unconventional or avant garde doesn't make it bad or weird.Sometimes you have to dig a bit deeper, but most people today can't be bothered.

  • @m06een00 i can be bothered. i search for new music ALL THE TIME. how i found a band called the civil wars. they are new and awesome. cuz their music sounds good. and they were rewarded for that by being nominated for awards.

  • All music starts somewhere right??!! all unheard of, underground non-mainstream bands. its only music that people like ENOUGH that makes it go mainstream. IMO. you can market a band the way you want to but if the people dont like it, its not going to go anywhere. thus it wouldnt be mainstream. and the bottom line was, i was really talking aboutthis song. and not all of her songs. you gotta admit, this sounds a little weird!!

  • @musiclover2161 Well said. she does sound like she is having a seizure.!!!!

  • @musiclover2161 What if you take your problem to the United Nations?

  • At the end of the day it doesn't really matter if a song's original if it sounds like a woman with tourette's attempting to sing

  • @TheBARNICLEisintown I cant vote this up ENOUGH. THUMBS UP. THUMBS UP. THUMBS UP. THUMBS UP THUMBS UP.

  • @TheBARNICLEisintown exactly my toughts... but.....

  • DOWNLOAD STARCH RAVEN ON ITUNES.....BEST ALBULM

  • i see pj going thru her nick cave period still...

  • @TheBillswill Her hair's always been that colour....

  • Weird for weird sake.....

  • What is the name of that instrument?

  • @nirconn Its called a Zither. It also goes by the name Autoharp.

  • God I love PJ

  • If you think there is no good music nowadays, then you are not looking.

  • @lucasboden at first I thought this was a joke. her voice is terrible. is this what you call good music?

  • @musiclover2161 Yes, this is good music. This is original music. The only thing that's terrible is your opinion. You can easily not like this music, but you can't say it isn't good! I set up a YouTube account just to point out your ignorance. (Shame on me, but hey, peopl need to learn). Have fun listening to Justin Bieber and all your X Factor shite!

  • @Adebayjim see i diagree. I listen to all kinds of music and i just dont get th is. and I do not like JB or anything on x factor. (i can tell your uk) which is probably why you like this. i listned to a couple of her o ther songs and they arent half bad, just not my type. i like jgood rock and roll. or as you call it "original" music. really any music written in full by the artist is "original " so your argument doesnt really hold water.
