my gf did this score. she lost her voice for a week. she loves this piece. Mosser does it good as well. Sumi has that technical advantage. Listen to her timing.
i would dare any of you cynical fucks to post a link of a more inspiring performance. anytime anyone is completely amazing, the first criticism is that they weren't musical enough. find something new to bitch about. people don't have to be out of tune in order to be perfect, simply because you have to be unhappy in order to be satisfied.
@littleomar6 I have 2 words for you: Edda Moser. And there's no need for you to be so angry either, people will like what they like, and you can't expect it to always be the same as what you like.
L'ambientazione ottocentesca è orribilmente Kitsch e fuori luogo, ma lei è eccezionale, senza gli isterismi cui si sentono obbligate normalmente le varie regine della notte.
perfect in this totally camp freudian bad taste show piece. she carries it with dignity. lets not fool ourselves. the queen of the night is a jealous old women past her prime. her singing is just a diversion. the opera is about her daughter and her discovery of sex and love. prosperpina is more important than demeter.
I saw a concert performance of Die Zauberflote last night at the Hollywood Bowl, with Sumi Jo as The Queen. She was not her best. She struggled in the second part of this aria and she fell painfully flat on the F. She could not hide her embarrassment and disappointment in her face. When the aria finished, she walked off the stage with her head down. It was an off night for her. I still love her, though.
Damrou's performance is very good. She is like Marilyn Manson.
Sumi Jo has better voice quality though...she and Moser (check her "o zittre nicht) has the technicality advantage, and perfect tempo progressiveness whenever they reach the F note...but all-in-all, they are all great...that's why we watch them here on you tube.
Not like me...a tenor that has no use...never took it too seriously. Just did it for college scholarship.
Yes it does matter. The rest of the aria was ok, but with such a well known aria like this one, things have to be perfect, because there are so many ok or even good versions, but not very many spectacular ones. Listen to Lucia Popp or Diana Damrau for a truly breathtaking rendition.
Oh wait, I'm not sure if Lucia Popp is on Youtube singing "O Zittre Nicht." I was thinking of "Der Holle Rache." Sorry about that, Diana's is still phenomenal.
PUHLEASE... nothing is perfect in opera, rather perfection is approximated. These artist make every attempt to sing a flawless performance each night they are on stage, so cut them a little slack if a note is slightly off.
Further, I'd agree that Popp had a wonderful interpretation of the QOTN, but I, personally, can't stand Diana Damrau's. That's just my opinion. There's a lot more to opera than The Magic Flute, so I'm excited for you as you learn more and grow your operatic knowledge stores:o)!
la interpretacion esbuena,la reina de la noche de mozart es una interpretacion muy dificil, es bueno poder ver los videos de estas divas internacionales, gracias
Oh my god. She looks like she's dressed like Cruela de Vil lol She scares de hell out of me... The singing is not that bad though... But could be a lot better. Diana Damrau seems to me like the best soprano in the Queen's arias.
Correction of Comment 2 of 2. It should read: "I've never seen her perform the arias from THE MAGIC FLUTE..." I don't think anyone has created an opera titled "The Queen of the Night," at least not yet. :-)
Comment 2 of 2. I've never seen her perform the arias from the Queen of the Night on stage live or even on video in their entirety (as far as I know, there is no DVD available here in the US). So I really appreciate your posting this absolutely awesome video. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Comment 1 of 2. Hello, Smoothiw. I've had the enormous pleasure of attending three different Sumi Jo concerts so far, and I own most of her CDs. A few years ago, I attended a performance of The Magic Flute (at the Los Angeles Opera) because she was going to be in it, but she did not perform due to illness. I was so disappointed to say the least!
<3 such wonderful technique

If you like Sumi Jo, listen to her performance as Olympia from Les Contes d'Hoffmann.

Fantastic concept and terrific singer. Too bad she never sang to the person she was "talking" to.

That was amazing! I like the change of costume from mythical to like um...40's - 50's wear, but kinda weird giving the story line of a myhtical land.

Again, a lot of people should just take the aria at face value. I really like the costumes and the set. They're different.

studio-like timing. what more if she did it in a recording studio. Can anybody post one just like this but a studio type recording?

It was precise indeed, and that is very much to be wanted.

Does it really matter that an F was squeaked? What about the rest of the aria? What about her lovely line and flexibility? I mean, really.

That was a very measly F it was barely held and it was squeaky in sound. I love sumi but not that F

Yeah, I agree. Maybe it's the sound quality, or she was having an off day, because on the recordings I have of her her F's sound perfect. =/
