don't blame ridley Scott for the voice over blame the idiotic masses
when the studio tested the movie with the audience it was the audience that didn't get it, so the studio force Scott to put in voice overs
their are moments in time when the people don't deserve the quality of artists, and leaders they get
I'm happy that their are Micheal bays, Bush jr's, and obama's people deserve to suffer under the corruption, evil, greed and vision less talent of today
A lot of the Blade Runner director's cut, sans voiceover, makes no sense and/or doesn't give enough information to follow the plot. The problem is that the people doing the voiceover apparently WAY overdid it, explaining things that didn't need to be explained. I say apparently because I've never had the opportunity to see the full original cut. But the director's cut is too unclear.
Right on, Frank. All versions with that bloody awful voice over should be burned at the steak, no two ways about it. And by the way, test screenings are nearly always a bad idea. Never mind the audience. It's almost as bad as over hyping something.
@MrLouKaas the Voice over was in the 82 cut but not the 92 cut or the 81 workprint, and it's not in the 07 Cut either. you should get it. Possibly the best documentary ever made on the making of a difficult film. Usually they're "oh we all got along so well" etc, but not Blade Runner!!
When I saw this as a kid, I liked the voiceover, but now it makes me think of that of the McKenzie brothers in Take Off, and, well, it kinda ruins the best part of the movie for me.
Darabont is the best famous BR fan by a mile. He knows exactly whats going on AND if you idiots who think Deckard is a replicant want to know how that ruins the rest of the film - give Frank a call, he'll tell you!
@FormulaOneSpy No it's not. Think about it. That point in the film, Baty learns to love life right. Cut to a blue sky, the first clear, blue sky we have seen the whole film. It's supposed to symbolise hope. It may be a tiny bit clunky, but it still isn't as bad as the voice over.
@IfIfsandands Yeah, but but there's suddenly blue sky in a place where there has been only acid rain during the whole movie. I think it was rightly fixed for Final Cut.
it was pure coincidence. they ran out of time and had to rebuilt the set in a studio, that's why they had to reshoot the final with the dove flying away later. also, the dove was too wet to fly when hauer let go of it because of all the rain. see making off.
@FormulaOneSpy Yeah I just saw the movie again (DC so no voice over luckily ) and this scene (blue sky) stroke me as rather odd. Just moments before we saw a pretty dark sky and then suddenly it's blue again...
I just watched The Final Cut... awesome movie. I have to say, though, I am very interested in seeing the version with voice overs, just to see what all the talk is about.
@instantdeath99 Yeah, it's like watching a comedy. I'm glad the film endured long enough and the demand remained high enough for a final cut that saw that damn voice over removed.
My friend and I did a re-enactment of Ford trying to get away with doing the voice over poorly. It's posted on YouTube under "Blade Runner Voice Over Coercion."
Lwt me tell you something. I love Ridly Scott's and Frank Darabon't work. They are between my top 5 directors, but.... guys.... nothing, i mean absolutely nothing can change or substitute my 1982 (or 1983) cineam experience when i stayed sitting on my seat long after the endcredits went off. There is only one Blade Runner movie to me and Ric k Deckard is not a replicant... think about it, it would be too easy in life to sacrifice for a replicant being a replicant. He made a total contradiction (
Yeah I like the Final Cut better. The voice over sounds really annoying, I've also read that Harrison Ford intentionally did a poor job reading the lines because he was personally opposed to the idea of a voice-over narration being added in post-production, and thought that doing a crappy reading would convince the producers to leave it out but they put it in anyways. I also like it without the voice-over because you can just really soak up in the haunting and beautiful music and imagery.
I watched the VO version (when it first came out). They added it because after some sneak previews audiences were completely clueless of what was going on in the film. VO has a long tradition in noir films; however, the final scene's VO was clumsy beyond belief and utterly unnecessary. Definitely stick to the director's cut.
@giger79 I watched both version - german (with VO) and english (without) - and I have too agree the VO in the german version really fits and makes the moment even sadder. Therefore I still prefer the old "german" version. A rare thing, usually the German translation really sucks.

haha, I completely agree with him on this. The voice over throughout was just bad, partly because it was unneeded, but mostly because it was delivered so damn poorly that it couldn't have been anything other than intentional.
Ha ha, I love how clearly detached and monotone Harrison Ford is during the narration, like a clear "F*** you" to the producers for making him do these retarded voiceovers.

Sorry, I usually agree with Darabont (despite his BUTCHERING the ending to 'The Mist') but I guess Im among the few that LOVED the narration version of 'Blade Runner'...it gave it a grand 1940's detective flick tone, I think it was far superior to the 'directors cut'...

Haven't seen Blade Runner, but yeah, I hate when movies do this. Like they need to TELL us what we can see with our own god damned eyes.

@cheezemonkeyeater
It's not the filmmakers fault though, in case you don't know, they sorta forced him to add the VO after the test screenings.
There are seven cuts total it seems, though three are the most famous, with the final cut being the most polished, correct, and finished version.

Harrison Ford narrated the way he did because he thought if he read his VO poorly enough, it wouldn't be put in. But it did anyway. A shame.

I didn't really remember the VO by Ford stepping on Rutger Hauer's " Time to die " speech.

That's one of the main reasons why Ridley Scott re did it and cut a lot of stuff out! And gave us a final cut! I agree with Frank D.
AZBound3 2 years ago 5
The funny thing is: In original englisch, the first Cut with the VO is absolutly bad.
but in the german dubbed version, I like the VO First Cut. Because the Actor, who speaks Harrison Ford, was so sensitive about the VO.
Ford didn't want the VO. You can hear that he ist bored and try so Sabotage this Idea.
But in the german Dubbed Version it works very very well! :)
Bigmac79 2 years ago 20
Interesting... but why are you watching a dubbed version of this masterpiece? :)
giger79 2 years ago 4
When you live in germany you don't have a chance :)
Before the days of DVD there was no chance for seeing it in original.
The first time I watched the movie, I was 12 or 13. Iv'e recorded it from TV on VHS and I loved it. (the first cut!)
Now I've got the Ultimate Edition with the First Cut, the Director's Cut and the Final Cut.
And I watched all three in original.
And it is right, in the original it is far better without the VO.
But here in Germany the dubbed Version is more famous.
