Bekonscot was always an inspiration for me...But I never had the money - or now the space - to make a decent sized model railway in the garden...or inside for that matter :-(
model engineers are not wealthy we run about scrap yards looking for materials , but as long as you get fun out of building something its better than not having a go
Interesting video, yes it proves that you can build a OO layout outdoors, but surely in these smaller scales it looks more of a 'Train-set' than a model. Don't discount the larger scales as being too expensive, they can be just as cheap as OO if you're prepared to kit and scratch build. The right choice of plants can also give you a very convincing landscape.
that vid is gd and bad gd cos it is instuctinal and bad cos now i REALLY want a garden railway but i cant afford it atm and i dnt think my dad will let me
all you need is a million pound house,a few hundred grand spare and your away, mind you I couldnt see any of the cheap (expensive) crap Hornby now turns out do a lap on that line!
you got thousands of miles of desert to the east of you!!!!Cant you live on the fringe and buy a few hundred acres for a thousand dollars, the land would be no good for farming but fine for model railways and its always sunny.
Are you joking? In California, land is very very expensive, and we DO have thousands of miles of land to the east of us, but very very little of it is desert. Mountains and great planes are not the same as deserts. And you most DEFINITELY can NOT buy a few hundred acres for a thousand dollars.
A thousand dollars will get you several square meters, perhaps.
Even out in the middle of nowhere, 1 acre is still probably around 8-10 thousand dollars
I was being sarcastic,I forgot that sarcasm is rarely used in the USA.Anyway, you have thousands of miles of empty land, and I'm sure some of it must be for sale, over here we have bugger all,not even enough room to swing a dead cat and by god do they want shitloads of money for even the roughest, crappiest bit of land usually between two other buildings.Dickhead gordon brown wanted 250,000 houses built this year, who the hell can afford them?? NO ONE!!So far they have built only 80,000,SHAME
i use sarcasam alot and im american and who buys a few HUNDRED ACRES JUST TO PUT A MODEL TRAIN LAYOUT ON people in california are really crowded { i live in virginia} some arent most are if you just live in the suburbs you can see whay your neighbor is watching from your house into his window and look a his 25 in tv just saying people in the us a crowded to
Thats not what my map of the USA says, also did you know that the UK will fit seven times into the state of Texas yet it less than hals the population of the UK??Yeah,I bet your all packed in like sardines over there along those dead straight XXthousands mile long roads.
If you use nickel silver track, the oxide is conductive and you dont need to clean it,otherwise if you use brass track as said previously you need a cleaning wagon.
i have a large lgb railway outside and a oo layout in the loft, i have bought a lgb track cleaning loco and to be honest it doesn't work as well as i hoped it would, i would love to have a oo layout outside because you could fit more in the layout in a smaller area compared to g scale, I am only 17 and spent most of my money from birthday and xmas and work from being tiny, i just worried what i will do when i move out and have to start over, or even if i can afford a house with a suitable garden
If your lucky enough to have the money to afford a house with a big enough garden, you can go the 00 way with nickel silver track and get more in.Did you know that you can get nickel silver G scale track from Peco that doesnt need to be cleaned? It's a little more expensive but will save you alot of trouble. The choice as they say is yours, but in the current climate if you have £195K to spend on an average house with average garden lucky you!
i dont, ma mum and dad bought our house off the council less than a 100k lol just lucky it had a big garden :D i have afew more year there yet though, i have got 4 yrs at uni still do so, i will just have to see how the market is in afew year but i am not getting my hopes up. the only problem is i dont tell any of my mates because it isn't exactly the cool thing, they wouldn't understand and i do not no anyone else in my area with oo or g gauge layouts, it appears to be quite a select hobbie,
When buying a council property if you have been there quite a while they sell it to you for an extreme knock down price,Maggy thatcher started all that off in her reign,I have a couple of friends whoose parents bought the houses they had been in for 40 years and they paid peanuts for them. There's loads of people out there that do model trains, nothing to be embarresd about,it may not be "The cool thing" but its better than standing on the street corner drinking white lightening.
Good video but how did Paul lay the track is there more to this video or is that it?? Cheers.

Very instructional video. Out here in California in the States, space for model railways is at a premium and outdoor is an attractive option.
