I do not know much about Japaneese culture, what I do know is that I love it's traditions. I'm from Nicaragua central america and we have traditions too, but none like this! It's beautiful, it catches my attention almost if I wish I were from Japan. The women are beautiful and the men no questions asked. How I wish I were back in ancient civilization. Except for the killings, lol
also, i love whoever you have doing the voice over. i love kabuki costume, make-up and performance but its hard to understand the storyline when i don't know whats been said. i can speak and understand Japanese, im even Japanese myself, well Japanese-American, but i never really thought that the singing was the narration. i always thought it was the accompanying musical piece. so thank you because now i can truly enjoy kabuki. <3
i luv all of the videos i have seen of yours so far and because of you now i know one of many, if not the best, of all kabuki performers...i was originally looking for videos on the new form of nihonbuyo but i saw this beautiful image and had to check out the video and now here i am.
The outfit looks very Chinese, even the makeup as well. I guess that's because allot of Japanese traditional outfits and performance arts are influenced from the Chinese.
Yokihi means "concubine Yang". Yu-Huan Yang, a extream beauty from the Tang dynasty of Chinese history, has a similar destiny like Egypt's Cleopetra..........
During the first 1000 B.C. Japan imported allot of culture from the mainland of China. And Yokihi is the Japanese pronunciation of Yang Kwei fei- family name is Yang, and "fei" at the end is a suffix meaning consort of princess.
This is a fusion of Chinese and Japanese theaters. The story is derived from an ancient Chinese poem in the Tang Dynasty, depicting the love between an emperor and his concubine, separated by the boundary between this world and the next world.
This unique performance is based on the famous Tang dynasty poem 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' by Bai Juyi, illustrating many of the key themes of the 7th century lyrics. A truly original and beautiful new fusion of Kabuki and Peking Opera by one of the great performing artists of our times.
Well, as far as chinese clothings go. What he is wearing IS authentic chinese opera style clothes. (But of course chinese opera clothings are a bit different from authentic ancient chinese clothings... )
Read the description of the video and it explains that the kabuki was based on a Chinese princese. That's why they dress with Chinese style make-up and costume.
Superb!!

yokihi is the mimick of "yang gui fei" in chinese. Yang is her lastname. "Gui Fei" is the highest ranked concubine of the emperor in ancient China.

strominheaven 3 years ago
weishuyang 3 years ago 2
sinonora 2 years ago 2
iysum 2 years ago
mikawa1205 2 years ago 2

concubine, not princess.
"That's why they dress with Chinese style make-up and costume"
i think he chose the opera costume instead of dance costume because wearing the dance costume would have made it very clear he's not a woman
