I was there at the Lincoln Center for Camelot that night! What a great memory. Is this available for download or DVD in a complete form? That would be a great keepsake.
They had weird costumes because it was an interpretation. It was also more of a concert than an actual full performance. Operas are done in modern or changed costumes all of the time. It's just a different interpretation.
The costumes were all over the place in this production. Arthur wore a suit for most of it, Mordred wore some kind of 80s punk drag mix. I'm sure there was method in it somewhere, but a rather hidden method that I, and I imagine anyone who wasn't the main costume bod, have yet to quite place...
Are you enrolled in some sort of voice program where he's teaching, or are you meeting him socially? Because in my experience professionals don't just "hand out" tips - they are paid for their time. ;) Have fun, whatever it is you're doing. I've met him a couple times - very nice, just like the rumors say, lol.
Lol. That's awesome! You are very lucky! I have connections through an old teacher. I also think that the teacher I take lessons from in Champaign, Illinois knows him. I'm in college in Oklahoma studying vocal performance. Just started singing 2 years ago. Wish I knew I could sing years ago... but oh well. ;)
At least you started in college! I started studying voice about 3 years ago just before I turned 40, and now I sing with a local opera group. Who knew??? It's never too late to start! Best of luck to you!

Forgiveness, but Marin Mazzie is a lousy actress. She will never make it to Broadway if she continues to act that way LOL Her voice is more opera-sounding than Broadway although it is a great singing voice. Nathans speaking voice is great (voice over career?) but his acting is also as hammy as Marin. This is so amateurish when compared to Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave's
I think they're being hammy on purpose. I haven't seen Marin Mazzie in anything else but I've seen Nathan Gunn in both comedies and dramas - he's a very accomplished actor.
it feels like that because they are required to project outwards in a large space, and it doesn't translate through a screen, which is a very tight performance arena. the technique is very different for working on a stage versus on film.
actually, i find the intimate moments quite honest. there's a palpable physical chemistry for me. perhaps it works for me because i view it as a recording of a stage production
Well, large arena or small, they really louse it up with their hamminess...like bad soap opera acting LOL I do admit their singing is beautiful and like opera, but their acting needs a lot of work!
@MastersoftheOpera well considering there is a difference in acting for the stage and acting for film, I would say you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. They are perfect for the parts
@MastersoftheOpera The point of old musical theatre wasn't to sound like today, that more operatic sound was what everyone did in the 50s and 60s when these musicals were written, because all singers, pop and otherwise, were trained professionals. Nathan Gunn is an extremely well trained, professional opera singer, and is also accomplished in musical theatre. Marin Mazzie is also trained and has many, many roles on Broadway from the Golden Era.
I think she has a fine voice, a little bombastic and contemporary sounding, but nice just the same. However, I felt her acting was a little mechanical and contrived. But please don't get me wrong, she's satisfactory, I just prefer Julie Andrews's singing and Vanessa Redgrave's acting in their respective performances of Guenevere.
Oh my Lord, her mouth bothers me so much. I tend to lean toward a more operatic sound and she is a little broadway for my taste. But she has a nice voice.
oh i know, and the fact that he's got his shirt off half the time has nothing to do with it. haha, i'm actually a huge fan too. i wanted to see him so bad at the lyric this season, but i nearly went broke seeing hvorostovsky in onegin instead

If they're being hammy on purpose then they don't understand the show----Camelot is not a beefcake comedy. It requires emotional honesty and truth.
And Mazzie has one of the worst voices I've ever heard.

Lol to echo Luindriel I think they are meant to be hammy. Nathan Gunn is actually a very, very good actor I've watched him in other performances.

@mlec91283 Gee, as one of the best leading ladies on Broadway in decades, I am sure Marin Mazzie is crying since you deem her only "satisfactory".
