Just like anywhere, the poverty level varies. Some parts are very bad though. On this trip, we had a woman walk 5 miles with a broken leg just so she could be treated, we were most likely the only doctor she would ever get to see. We were up in the mountains for one of the medical clinics and thats where it seemed like people were hurting the most. I would say those living conditions were worst of all, you could see a distinct difference as compared to the cities.
They dont have much, even water is a great commodity to them. As for the orphans, I didnt really see many. Whenever I saw kids, they always had parents with them, but that mightve just been the nature of the clinic. Im not positive, but the kids probably had to have a guardian with them in order to be cared for. All I can say is that this trip could probably be up in the category of life-changing as I got to see how others live.
Is the poverty real bad? From what I've heard it's pretty severe in some parts of Guatemala. Are there a lot of orphans there? God's calling me to start or plug into an existing orphanage somewhere in Central/South America or Africa and I'm trying to get a feel for what's out there from folks who've been places firsthand.
