Nine O Nine is owned by the Collings Foundation of Stowe, Massachusetts. It was manufactured at the Douglas Aircraft Company plant in Long Beach, California in 1944. Following the war, it was used to collect air samples following tests at the Nevada Proving Grounds until 1952. There it sat until 1965 when it was sold as scrap. It was converted to a tanker in 1977 and flew as “Lady of Yucca” until it was purchased by the Collings Foundation in 1985 and restored to military configuration.
@cstrohmeyer Great Vid, thanks for Posting. It gives an even better impression what it must have been like for the Crews than the Film Memphis Belle did.
My brother flew on Aluminum Overcast another B-17 that tours around. I know there is one based at John Wayne airport in Orange County as well (Fuddy Duddy). There is a new aviation museum there on the general aviation side (opposite from the passenger terminal).
I know this plane flies around many locations in the country, it was just in Northern California & Medford Oregon. The owners were charging over $400 per ride and $12 to tour inside
They don't make 'em like they used to! Collings Foundation stops by for flights here in SF, NM on occasion. Always a treat!

Thanks for the compliment :)
The Song is "In the Mood", but this is not the original Glenn Miller version from the 1940s.

Ahhh yes... The bail out alarm.
When you are in kilometers above from ground which is usually crowded with axis forces, nothing else can make your day but the BAIL OUT ALARM!

Does this plane still fly around SoCal? Where is it based and how can we ride in it?

Nice! But i'm wondering, why the nazilogos? is the painting winking good-bye? or I don't get it!
Bornisen 2 years ago
My understanding is that these logos represent "shoot downs"
cstrohmeyer 2 years ago 2
The Nazi symbols are most likely planes which were shot down, by the B-17. Thanks for posting! Great to see these WarBirds still flying...
