  • what the song name

  • When I was about 7 I had a t-shirt with "Egbert' on it because I couldn't say his name properly. My first tennis memory!

  • Stefan Edberg, the example of the sportmanship. Perfect Serve and Volley, good footwork, and really beautiful shots. He is the Fed´s tennis idol by the way, so is not coincidence the quality of those giants of the sport, with such and elegance and class.

  • Edberg looks like he's one on the band members in the rock band Europe...

  • That was the coolest shirt! Everyone wanted that shirt. Becker was a monster! Two of the greats. Precision vs brute strength.

  • he does not plays tennis....he was tennis!

  • Edberg = when tennis is LOVE

without him , this love is gone and dead

  • Edberg's a great champion, and a gentleman. Anyone can act like Mcenroe, but takes a lot of class to be a gentleman.

  • Are you serious? YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

  • Love that comment!

  • Stefan Edberg= Perfect Tennis!!

  • Sweetest backhand ever.

  • I played squash, and there are 4 types of balls.

With proper balls you could have normal wimbledon.

    This is ...

They all play hen (animal) tennis

  • every grand slam had its game but now everything is rolland garros variation.

    now it is snail tennis

  • lol agreed. Unfortunately, the courts had to be slowed downed to accommodate the new equipment. Wimbledon's surface should have remained the same though since it would discourage baseline rallies and force players to develop their grasscourt game.

  • its amazing how the grass looks worn out all over the court where as today its mainly on just the baseline

i prefer the game today then the serve and volley back then

    it looked very dated

  • Baseline games = boring

  • each to his own

but thats why i love federer so much,he has the most rounded game.he is brilliant at the net as well as at the baseline

  • if Stefan Edberg would have played today he would have destroyed federer. Federer should cry like a little boy after Edberg been finished with him.

  • this dated serve an volley game would never work against players like roger and nadal today

  • If you put great players of different eras in one moment in time with equal technology, raquets, etc These matches would be phenomenal. You are making and assumption that one style of tennis is better than others. Let me remind you that great baseliners like Lendl, Agassi, Borg always had trouble with volley players like Sampras, McEnroe, etc.

  • of course they would have trouble *rolls eyes*

but federer in his prime would beat them all-hands down.he is the most rounded player the world has ever seen

he is niot called the greatest of all time for no reason and your ignorant insignificant opinion cannot and will not take that away from him:)

    jejejejejejejejeje

  • First off, he is not the greatest player of all time yet.

Second, Sampras showed quite clearly that net play is still very powerful in the hands of a good player. Even recently in the demonstration matches with Federer.

Third, how can you say he would beat them all hands down? When the technology in, say Borg's or Laver's time was light years behind. The shots made today were just not possible then and a lot of the demise of serve and volley is due to technology not talent.

  • now he is!!!

  • Hey, he might well be.

However, I do not believe that he faced anywhere near the competition that the other great tennis players had to face. All he really has is Nadal ffs. Its like Schimacher in F1... sure he has the best record, but he is in no way the best ever imo.

And in regards to my post below, I do not for one second believe that he would neccessarily beat the other top players of the past (again... keeping raquet technology equal).

  • You do not know what you are talking about.

I've been watching tennis since 1987. I had never seen anybody better than RF in these years.

Edberg is great player no questions about it.

He is 10 to 25 head to head against Boris Becker shown here (who was my favorite player back then).

Edberg vs Wilander : 9-11. Vs ageing Connors he was 6-6!

RF does not have competition? Bullshit! He just happened to be too far away from competition. Any in top 10 will kick Edberg;s ass.

  • Where exactly in my post did I mention Edberg?

If you follow the trail of answers back, you will see Edberg was not in question. It was Federer vs the other candidates for the "top" position... Sampras, Borg, etc.

Second... wow 1987... I am impressed. I have been watching and playing longer than that.

Third, yes I maintain the his competition is shit compared to what other great champs had to face- particularly in the 70s and 80s.

  • oops. Actually since 1984. A first match I watched was McEnroe vs Connors in Wimby final.

    Does not matter.

As I said I watched the game for a long time and I can tell that I have never seen anybody play better than Federer. Only Borg comes to mind as looking as superior as Federer (I have collection of his matches on my hard drive). Competition - between times of dominance of Borg and Sampras the field was more even in their strength allowing several players to be in contention. That's all.

  • The field now is strong as it ever was. Just a single player is way more dominant than the rest of the pack.

  • Yes, well, as someone who has been watching tennis for about the same period of time, I do not agree with that conclusion. I do not think the field is of the same quality. But ok, not much we can do about that.

No need to try to pull rank though. We could have got here easier without that attempt.

  • Oh, and since you bring up Edberg.

You should know better than just quote head to head results. He was ranked longer at the top than 2 of the 3 players you used as an example.

  • sadly, i have to agree 100%

  • This video bings me back great memories as well. I remember watching the final on a rainy Monday afternoon, having been postponed due to the miserable weather that plagued Wimbledon that year. I was just 11 and totally in awe of this two legends' talent. Y qué recuerdos escuchar a Matías Prats retransmitiendo los partidos de tenis ;-)

  • What made Stefan's serve so effective was the kick he got on it. Unfortunately it came with a price - back problems.

  • Great players!

  • Becker had also a better serve than Edberg not far away from that of Sampras, but I would see them equally great in serve and volley, if not even Edberg slightly better.

My favourite German player was Michael Stich, his volleys were great as well. His break throuh was much later, cause he finished school first regulary, but then his successes were not notable less than Beckers.

Also one of the best serve and xolley players in his times.

  • Edberg won so many championships, why did he always seem to be a little disgruntled? One might defend his demeanor by citing his pursuit of perfection as only champions do, but Laver wasn't disgruntles, Sampras wasn't disgruntled, Federer isn't disgruntled. Oh well, everyone's different.

  • Stefan Edberg was the best player when playing from the net. His volleys were the best, I have ever seen.

I think he was even a little bit better from the net than Stich, Sampras, Federer or Becker.

His best match was the US Open Final against Jim Courier, in my opinion.

  • Maybe his net game was the best. But as far as serve-and-volley, you have to factor in the serve too, not just when he's at net. And because of that, Sampras comes out on top in the serve-and-volley category.

  • Edbergs serve wasn't really the most powerful, but extremely effective for serve and volley.

Sampras was in general the more complete player. Edberg and Becker had disciplines in which they were undoubtfully great, but they had some weaknesses too. Sampras had disciplines in which he was great too, mostly the same as Becker or Edberg, but it is difficult if not impossible to see really a weakness in the game of Sampras.

  • Stefan Edberg = best backhand not even arthur ashes backhand could be that angled and that precise

  • His backhand was great as well, you are right.

  • Federer's backhand is right up there. Just look at the way he handles the power game and power serves of today. It doesn't phase him. As a matter of fact, he uses the pace off his opponents' shots. And angles? He's got the angles, control, and variety too.

  • Listen, man. You're creating a false enemy by creating a false "me vs you" situation.

Federer is not "mine" as you put it; and Edberg is not "yours" as you imply.

You need not to "pray" for any one's failure in order to bolster your high opinion of another.

  • Whatever, dude. Don't expect others to pay attention to you if you don't pay attention to other people. Heheheheheheh.

  • he didnt look finished to me today,or all week for that matter

he could win rolland garros this year, looking at how he played and beat nadal in madrid today

  • Winning Roland garros fed hahahahhahahahah? You'll never see it happening. Rafa lost today coz he was tired and playing in a faster tipe of clay and in altitude. The roland garros tournament has different conditions and Roger will have to deal with a rested Nadal and with Djoco who's playing great on clay. If there's a player who could stop Nadal run at the FRENCH IS DJOCOVIC not Fed.

  • excuses excuses :)

  • i guess RF just poved ur wrong haha hes the best 14 GS titles 20 consecutive semifinals I dont think nadal will achieve that!!!

  • but after madrid, Federer won at least Roland-Garros & Wimbledon! 15 grand-slam, he's got the new record! I don't think he is finish yet! He can win 3 or 4 grand-slam more!

  • Another fed's fanatic. 3 or 4 is completely unrealistic with the emergin new stars like DELPO, Cilic, Djoco and Murray. i'd say he wins two more an he's done. Trust me on this, next year will be fed's last year to win slams.

  • theres something weird watching this 2 men with short shorts, with this kind of background song. hmmm. anways. thanks for the video Just saw the High Quality part nice!.

  • Stefan edberg is the best Serve volleyer in history.

He Played smartly and it worked

  • yup, I hope to see a good player nowadays that can still do this.

  • Best volleyer overall, perhaps. But Sampras had a much better serve and better half volleys.

  • tennis is not a sport that can be subject of "opinions" such as some posted above.

these players, like many of their generation are artists. tennis has changed and it's lost its charme, this is a fact!

let's watch and admire in silence.

    a big thank to youtube!

  • This brings back so many memories for me it makes me cry. As a young teenager,(I'm now 32) Stefan was my idol. I'd sit in front of the television for the whole 2 weeks when wimbledon was on, taping every Stefan match. The most graceful and talented player ever. Tennis is not the same now. When are you ever going to see those volleys, back hands and lobs again? Love you Stefan.

  • I totally agree, Jennifer.

  • Fuck off ... you know nothing mate...

  • i guess you started watching tennis ( i said watching ´cause i doubt you´ve ever practised it ) a couple years ago and don´t know anything about it if you can´t appreciate the talent of these two players . sorry for you. the guy that made this video knows tennis and loves it that´s why he can say what were awesome points..doesn´t mean players today are worse ( probably different). start learning honey

  • you're a moron, a fucking stopid idiot who doesn't know anything about tennis. please give yourself a favor, don't ever come back to this forum to say something like that. These two guys are two of the greatest players on grass that have ever existed period.

  • you don't know anything about tennis my dear, what do you want me to do? you're insulting two top ten players ever by saying that Fed would crush them. Fed is equal to sampras and sampras never crushed them. Agassi at 35 almost beat fed at the 2005 us open final and agassi never crushed these two guys. Your knowledge of tennis is pathetic.

  • You are not a fucking loser. You just don't know anything about tennis so you should be banned from posting here. I didn't mean to make you feel like a loser but your comment was way out of line.

  • Fuck off idiot. You said that Fed would crush these two legends of the game 6-0,6-0,6-0. Who's the retard here? This video is for people who admire and respect these two legends of the history of tennis. You're just a kid who doesn't know shit about tennis. Why don't you do us a favor? get lost and stop posting here. Edberg was my idol in the 80's. Probably you were not born in the 80's. I won't keep wasting my time with a kid like you.

  • @pulverapa you want me to tell why? well i can give you reasons even though i don't have to, because you're stupid enough to find it out by yourself...ok here we go

    1.changed surface speed over years

    2.changed rackets technology over years

3.bad trainers to teach decent serve& volley style

4.lazy-ass players, that doesn't like to teach technics, that requires some thinking, instead of simple ball smashing

...not enough for you? i can go on and one...just give me reasons...

  • @pulverapa oh and my dear beleive me! if Federer or Nadal or anyone played with the same conditions like back than with top players and confident of those time believe me they'd never stood a chance...and you know why? its simple, because BACK than there were all the conditions for SMART players to win, while today there's all the conditions to win for ball smashers like Nadal or Djokovic...should i continue?

  • @Summon256

Players adapt to the conditions, it would be stupid not too. It takes a massive amount of skill to time the ball like Nadal and Djokovic do, and both have tremendous feel and touch around the net. They are really moving tennis on to a whole new level.

You should't compare different eras though. In 25 years people will look back on Nadal and Djokovic and they will be out dated. Each era should be appreciated for what it was.

  • @SamCoreJ no it shouldn't some changes are just wrong and not worthy...no more volleyers dominating these days what makes me stop watching tennis...its boring baseline mashing, no more serve and volleyers no more tennis for me...so you say you appreciate unacceptable unintelligent atitude of players nowadays? i see...

  • @Summon256

Is that what I said? If thats not putting words in someones mouth I don't know what is. I wasn't rude to you, and don't really understand why I got such a condescending comment back.

  • @SamCoreJ rude? so it sounded rude to you? i'm sorry dear flower next time i';ll be more careful not to abuse your precise smooth personality when i try to reply to you...are we okay? ...and since you started it all lets just say its MY OPINION...BEAR WITH IT! or STFU...

  • @Summon256

    "are we okay?". lol

  • @SamCoreJ ...not educated with English as well as i see...well...what can i tell you thats tragedy, big big tragedy...

  • @pulverapa oh and you know what? you still know nothing about tennis...

  • @pulverapa reactions on people, resulting your comments marked as spam determines you're the one who sucks..get over it people don't like you...now you can cry...i let you...

  • @juandi2570 LOL you're absolutely right man, the Swiss is nowadays the best one for what concerns class and volleys, but he's nothing compared to these two... I still own an horrible Fila shirt like the ones which were weared by Bum Bum Becker, and I'm proud of it! I guess that tennis started with McEnroe and is ending with Federer and the unkept promise Roddick, but it's my personal opinion, nothing more than that.

  • Well no doubt in anybody's mind that federer is one of the all time great player. But you know what when you say He could beat these guys 6-0, that's wrong. Since how many guys from the current lot know vollying. Vollying is an art and that means precisely how well a particular player covers the net. Now the two players here know that art. And yes, Stefan Edberg, arguably is the greatest serve and Vollyer of all time. So when he will play with Federer(given they are of same age), anyone can win.
