Ray, I know for a FACT why the penises were removed. Most of those pieces were taken by explorers back in a time when it might have been seen as lewd or unchristian to have penises hanging out everywhere.

To avoid offending people coming to the museum, they would actually remove them. In some paintings they also painted over them, or covered them up. It's sort of a shame that they defaced so many pieces of art like that.

1) Most were damaged by periodic censorship fads.

For what it's worth, I thinks it's possible that the penises were removed to try and humiliate the statue and the Greeks - for the same reason the Persians and Muslims knocked the nose off statues, it was considered a symbol of the power of the figure and doing so made it less important (if you get me).
