This reminds me of the Detroit car show. Whether or not any particular vehicle has great attributes, the car companies always lather "models" all over the cars, hoping to convince everyone that their new box of bolts is sexy (at the very least) & like this video, occasionally there's a Corvette, Mustang, Charger or other style that out classes any "girl de jour" that might be draped on the fender. Kay Starr at her advanced age will remain immortal. Those "cliché" girls married, then faded away!
Speaking as a professional vintage clothing dealer, and judging from the hairstyles and "outfits", I'd say this is from circa 1960 - 63. Songs had a much longer lifespan back then than today. And yes, this was created to be eye candy for guys in saloons who were a few beers in. Still, great to see Ms. Starr and a wonderful slice of period culture. I enjoyed this far more than just about any video made today. I'm sure Rollo Tomassi watched this a few times...!
The point is, we don't need bimbos shimmying in the background. This is Kay Starr with her greatest hit that should be enough. I've been told these Scopitones were shown mostly on machines in bars, so I guess they figured more men would watch than women, but even so...
tallpaul521: Who are you and what is your performing history. To open for Kay Starr is really something. I saw her in Vegas in the 50s. Surely one of the all time greats. Thanks.
This was the first song I had ever heard by the incomparable Miss Kay Starr from my mother's Capitol Records 78 rpm single. It brings back so many memories to see this vintage piece, and also a question: could today's older artists get MTV and VH1 play if their videos were more X-rated? As these artists will never get played through these outlets on their talents alone, I am some would indeed go for it. Starr had a fantastic delivery primarily heard in black vocalists, the exception is Timi Yuro
OK - I'm trying to appreciate this for what it is, given that this art form had to precedence. That being so, Kay Starr does a great job - but the dancers and camera man's fixation on their bodily parts reminds of me of poorly executed Burlesque.
But you people posting need to keep these Scopitones in proper historical context to appreciate them as well. Don't forget the majority of the western world (Western Europe & the U.S. -- where this is from) Scopitones were made in the early 1960's (1962 to be exact for this one) which was at least four (4) years before (1966) that the National Organization Women was formed and Betty Friedan wrote her feminist, "The Feminine Mystique".
That should have read: "National Organization of Women".
Of course, don't forget even after NOW was formed & "The Feminine Mystique" & even after more of the sexual revolution we would still get a lot more tentilating views of the female body than maybe should be shown in later music videos. I mean after all is what going on this vid. in 1962 any more or less insulting to women than what we would get in some of Madonna or Britney or the Spice Girls (or substitute any # of artists) vids?
I'm no prude, but I think the other women in this are totally unnecessary and incredibly tacky compared to Kay and take away from her classy look. I love her and this song.
I love the moves these women are doing. So strange, how minimal and repetitive they are. Barely dancing, clearly designed to show off one or another body part. Some creative person could probably study this thing and find a lot of inspiration for... something. This is one of my all-time favorite scopitones.
amazing song, but what`s with those dancers? totally ruined it.

Thanks for this! I had the pleasure of working with Miss Starr as her opening act back in the 1980's -- a classy lady.

Were the dancers specifically picked for their lack of talent? This is one trashy video! It's an insult to Kay Starr.

Yes, 1952. Although this Scopitone wasn't filmed and released until 1962! I also love these women. Certainly wouldn't mind taking a spin with them!
