  • I can't believe UMG signed this nerd LOL

  • Did you seriously just call Craig Finn a nerd?

  • I so so adore Craig Finn's voice. Loved him ever since LFTR PLLR.

  • but hey kinda looks like a nerd

  • can anyone tell me the piano part for this?

  • the hold steady are fantastic, this album rocks!!

  • Can someone clarify if the pianist is also in leftover crack? Or was at one point in leftover crack? I heard that somewhere..

He defiantly fits the image, but i still want to make sure. Im seeing them live on the 23rd :)

  • He plays keyboard in the video for Two Cups of Tea by Star Fucking Hipsters, which features stza (the lead singer of leftover crack) so maybe he was in leftover crack it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Franz Nicolay is a bit of a legend though, really adds a lot to The Hold Steady.

  • Possibly my favourite band at the moment. I can't get over how fantastic this album is. I've only just got used to how they look though ha.

  • lol the lead singer looks different than I thought

  • She was a really cool kisser and she wasn't all that strict of a Christian.

  • Im shocked. I nevert watched a video of this group, just listnd to the music. I imagined the singer to be a though tattooed guy but he looks kinda nerdy to me :D Could easily pass for a teacher, lol

  • "She was really cool kisser and she wasn't all that strict of a christian"...funny bastards...

  • Yes, but the SINGER wrote the songs...so...

  • he reminds me of Bob Mould

  • "He likes the warm feeling but he's tired of all the dehydration"

That's a heroin reference, yo. These guys are on SMACK!

  • it's an alcoholism reference; john berryman was a drunk.

  • I thought it was an alcohol reference. It gives you a warm feeling, but sucks the water right out of you

  • I think Finn was pointing at John Berryman's alcoholism with that line. After all, a hangover is caused mostly by dehydration, and this song is a thoroughly awesome tribute to Mr. Berryman, so, do the figuring...

  • is this punk?

  • ultra cool!

  • "There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right.

Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together."

Love the On the Road reference.

  • Call me crazy, but this band is like an exceptionally atmospheric combination of counting crows and... the drive by truckers...? I dunno, listening to this music makes me think of like watching huge fireworks drunk on a beach with a frisky chick that was met just hours before... that flavor of happy. Intense!

  • hahaha, very good

  • That's probably the best summary of The Hold Steady anyone has ever come up with.

  • classic. well said

  • Anyone else think Kubler looks a bit like Alex Lifeson?

  • That would explain the drummer's Rush shirt.

  • "She said you're pretty good with words, but words won't save you life, and they didn't, so he died."

    I LOVE that lyric

  • ME too!

  • it's always the ugly bands that are best.

  • haha wise words my friend

  • ah! i LOVE this band! Craig Finn looks like Randy Newman and puts pretty piano music in his music like Bruce Springsteen with a nice twist of Elvis Costello! Not to mention nice Replacements roots.

  • Finns kind of an odd fellow as far as his dance moves go.

  • When I heard the Kerouac reference in the opening lines, I knew that I would love this band. I was right.

  • Awesome. If Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars, Tommy Stinson and Bob Stinson had gone to grad school and never been in a fistfightthey would sound like this.

  • This is just a great song and the music video oh man! It isn't full of all that fancy stuff it is just a straight up awesome video.

  • myspacecom/mohawkdutch

mix of social distortion and the hold steady haha

    check it out

  • fuck the vid its the music thats important. this is a great we tune.

  • I smell Springsteen worship.

  • If that's the only worship you saw fit to mention, then your experience must be sadly limited. All music is derivative. It's just a matter of who you steal from and what you do with it. This stuff is pretty awesome.

  • I also sense a strong appreciation for Elvis Costello in their music (among others). Looks like they got Dan Aurbach from The Black Keys to play drums for them.

  • smell any Replacements?

  • good song boring vid

  • Finally, a band I can call "mine". The Hold Steady and Kings Of Leon have given me a voice.

  • Best band in a long long while. They've restored my faith in rock 'n roll.

  • This is the first song of theirs that I heard. It completely sucked me in!

  • Nice song, boring video

  • great song but the pianist looks a little weird :O

  • You mean a little Awesome.

  • I like his style

  • Umm... is it just me or is the end of the video missing (where they stop the tape, and one asks if it wouldn't be easier to just make copies instead of performing for every recording, and they all just stare at him like he's crazy)? Isn't that the whole joke?

  • Killer Rush 1980 Permanent Waves t-shirt on the drummer.

  • MLB 2K8

  • so tell us what a good video is.

  • Search "The Replacements"

  • IMHO, Replacements = tremendous band but forgettable videos.

  • Dude, the Replacements hated everything about music video at the time that they were on their way up. It was everything they stood against (if they stood for anything). They were required by their label to make videos in support of their albums. In response, they made the video for Bastards of Young about as dull as possible: a video of a speaker playing the song.

  • yeah i know the history. i was simply replying to a post by Conchetta (below) claiming that the Replacements made great videos. god damn job.

  • Sorry man. Read it out of context.

  • i'm plenty familiar with The Replacements. Also very good.

  • You didn't actually say what was bad about this band? If your going to go out of your way to search a band you don't like and comment on them, at least think of something to back yourself up, otherwise you just look like an asshole.

  • Implications, my dear Mase666.

  • "There are nights when I think that Sal Paradise was right" is the best opening line to an album ever.

  • this bunch is just THERE...Craig Finn looks like an extra from the cast of "Quiz Show" and he is expressive and masterful and non-rockstar all at the same time and yeah I know he meant to do it but it works. Except for Citrus I have just loved every track THS has on YouTube. Got me into LifterPuller too. Warren Zevon would have wanted to have played with these guys.

  • I love The Hold Steady, saw 'em last night and they have a really good energy. I think they could be really really big soon.

  • The IndieTits in Bellen said it right:

"I liked The Hold Steady better when they were Bruce Springsteen."

  • It's like I said...who the fuck are the indietits?

  • I liked the Hold Steady better when they were the Replacements.

  • It's always easier to say no than yes.

  • Not a huge fan of this song to be honest, really like the sound of the band in general though.

The guy's voice is great! It is distinctive, and they would be just a pretty average band without it in my opinion.

  • Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

  • a very very good band..

  • Really, I honestly think this is my favourite performance video of all time. doesn't hurt that this band is in my top 10 list either.

  • time to go back to listening to li'l john...eh?

  • Idiots like you do not deserve to use the internet. Shut the fuck up.

  • Don't you EVER talk that way about THE BOSS!

Springsteen has more talent in his penis than you, your mother, uncle steve, and your dog have in their collective vaginas.

  • your* collective vaginas.

  • Thank you for correcting my grammar! I am pretty sure I was drunk when I left that...

  • His voice sounds like Nick Cave's, but the band sounds totally different

  • THIS is fucking music. Love it.

  • Good stuff!

  • Oh my god, a rock song with a solid beat and a melodic piano... that means a Springsteen rip off. Not Springsteen, these guys really sound like South-Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Not that that's a bad thing.

  • Outstanding stuff, remeniscent of Springstein, Costello, early Billy Joel, when music was so much more than how you looked, Pre-MTV, best musical period in history.

  • ...and he was drunk and exhausted but he was critically acclaimed and respected

    GENIUS

  • I just bought "Stay Positive." I don't think it's my last purchase from these guys.

One reason why: This is drinking music; and I mean that in a good way! The Hold Steady & beer - two great tastes that tast great together!

  • Heard about these guyz from a friend about 2 years ago....they were America's best bar band, now they're about to take over the world!!!!

  • Gee...they make me feel alive...even though I'm f..g adult---

  • the lead singer kinda sounds like the BOSS

  • its funny that you say that, as bruce fan i dont hear it but rolling stone magazine said the same thing

  • I think so too. Hell, they both have the same haircut.

Listen to "Girls Like Status"... that's basically Promised Land.

  • i saw these guys in fargo, it was amazing

  • Reppin' the Fargo, I feel ya

this band is from Minnesota, so Fargo's basically next door

  • AWESOME. period.

I never knew what they looked like!

  • An absolute blinding rock song from a great band. Only just discovered them. But why does the BBC Radio 1 & 2 never play them, but continue to play Coldplay & the Kiaser Chiefs constantly.

  • Probably 'cos you're listening to the wrong shows, Colin Murray's played them loads of times, radio 1, 10-12 pm monday to thursday.

  • Hardly the treatment they deserve and anyway Colin Murray is a cock.

  • Wow I love the piano in this song!

  • this song rocks!!!

    I love these guys.

the pianist's mustache is the nuts!!!

  • I love the opening line...great tip of the hat to Jack Kerouac

  • When is "Stay Positive" out? Uncut (greatest music mag ever) already gave it *****...

  • Haha, I like the singer so much when

he sings/ mumbles "She was a damn good

dancer but not such a good girlfriend."

  • Craig Finn is one of my heros. Actually it's I idolize all of them. No one else like them.

  • kickass

  • one of the best songs ever

  • you can see they were influenced by Bruce Springsteen & Elvis Costello,it's not a slam i think this song kicks ass!

  • I agree with you. Only stupefyingly ignorant adolescents would be offended by your observation.

  • I seriously hope that was a joke.

If I could give you -1000 for that comment, I would. Just horrible.

  • I seriously hope that was a joke.

If I could give you -1000 for that comment, I would. Just horrible.

  • What? Did you expect Justin Timberlake or Orlando Bloom to start an Indie band?

  • hahahaha, A+

  • What the fuck does that have to do with anything. Judging by your comment, you most likely are a superficial worthless piece of shit. Negative 1000 indeed.

  • Today, I buyed the album.

    Awesome.

    Love this Band.

  • Franz, I love you.

  • I like the pianist, music could always use some piano.

  • This band rock! Saw them in Belfast, August last year!

  • I love the pianist... hawt! XD

  • I like that. And kudos to the drummer for his Rush shirt.

  • LFTR PLLR/MPLS TO THE DEATH

  • Omg! How can I never have heard this song before?

  • And why is that, you douche?

  • O.o.

  • you suck! The hold steady are awesome!

  • wow thank you. but ur entitled to ur opinion just as i am to mine

  • so... you for stuck between the stations just so you could say they suck and piss everybody off? wow afifan youre soo fucking cool...

  • whoo! AFI!

  • i think they are the best fucking band in the world, by a million miles actually x

  • does it matter how he looks??? really??? The lyrics and music is kick ass!!!

  • it grows on ya :L

  • omg the singer is so sexy

  • They're some of the best songwriters of our generation.

one of my favorite lyrics of all time- "sucking off each other at the demonstrations/ making sure their makeup's straight/ crushing one another with colossal expecations/dependent, undisciplined, sleeping late"

  • he looks like NEWMAN FROM SEINFELD!

  • hahahahahaha! only a little thiner.....he could be his brother...HA!

  • mwahahaha

  • I love Craig.

    Great song.

  • i agree shallow and pedantic, lol i like 'em

  • A cross between Randy Newman and Springsteen.

  • yeah!

  • I couldn't decide at first if I liked it or if I would forget it again, so I looked up the lyrics^^ They're great!

And you should'nt judge a song by the appearance of the singerO.O if you just listen to the music you needn't see the face...:P

  • I'm surprised that someone would call this song generic. It features piano, an instrument that in my opinion is rarely heard in modern rock music. That alone made the song distinctive to me.

  • Wow, that's pretty sad if the lead singer's appearance is going make you dislike a song. I happen to think it's great.

  • i like his voice

  • Not too good either. haha

  • not bad

  • Not to bad...
