  • you could have used an led instead of calculator..

  • do you always have to use zinc?

  • This movie is very well done, but all viewers need to draw proper conclusion from it. The conclusion is that EVEN IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH VOLTAGE FROM YOUR HOME-MADE BATTERY (no matter how you call it; lemon, vinegar, salt water or manure), IT WILL NOT PRODUCE ENOUGH ENERGY to make working many "serious practical devices" such as car. So do not be excited if you lighten a diode or a calculator. And do not think that you are getting energy from vinegar or salt water. Here it was Zinc.

  • CAN IT POWER A LED LIGHT??

  • the disadvantage of this viniger bateri is that its large and has very low power.

  • how much was that volt reader and where did you get it?

  • hey..can iuse an ordinary vinegar ?

  • any acid or alkaline will work

  • Ikea , For thääää win :D Im from sweden :D åäö :D

  • you can buy a volt meter at harbor fraight tools for like three dollars

  • it doesn't matter what kind of wire you connect to the lamp, any type of conductor will work

  • coper and zinc wire

  • Did the battery lose strength (from .984 to .89 volts) just due to evaporation?

  • help! wen 4:20 what kind of wire is it connecting to the light bulb. idk wut kind of certain wire to buy.

  • Oh, and thanks for posting this vid. Helped me really much! ^^

  • lol those yellow batteries are from IKEA

    got those myself xD

  • where can I buy a volt meter?

  • Radioshack. Or any decent electronics part store.

  • why do you use 2 'batteries' connected in a serie, while you can just use a bigger cup and put in 2 times as much vinegar? would that work?

  • no. it would just increase the lifetime of the battery.

  • = amperes

  • I don't know about power but I think it has something to do with current vs voltage.

  • wow this is a great video

  • would the calculator connection work with a solar cell calculator? thats all i have...

  • lol i dumb. for my science project i went with a tooth pick bridge. i should have done the battery would have taken 1minute instead of most likely a week or so.

  • You guys totally saved my life!!!!!! I was in need of a science project and only had one night to make it, n this only took a few seconds!!!! LOVE U GUYS!!!!!

    Att Mary Ana Adonia

  • genius keep it up

    thanks

  • What would happen if you made the nail and the copper wire touch?

And also if the acid is stronger does that mean the voltage would increase?

  • try 6% percent viniger u get a volt or more per cup

  • do the 2 metals just have to be 2 different ones ?

  • Yes, they do.

  • will this vinegar battery ever lose energy? also why do regular batteries have to be recharged? if the energy just goes in revolutions around the circuit dont they end up where they started? what do they have that goes away?

  • well in a lead acid battery the sufuric acid inside turns to water as it goes through the chemical reactions of creating electricity and when you charge the battery you reverse the reaction creating sulfuric acid

  • nice videos! very helpfull if your new to wiring things needed to power various things with... a lemon, some vinegar, or even a battery! :P

great job! 5\5 five stars subscribed! favorited!

  • very clear explanation, good work !

  • how long would the vinager bat last do u think?

  • can i use hot dip gavinized nails

  • try using non magnetic stainless steel outer cylinder and a soft iron core, the soft iron will decompose but the stainless will not. make sure your stainless isn't magnetic. I am going to build some 6ft tall batteries this way, I can reuse the stainless forever i just have to replace the iron cores, 6' tall by 1 ft diameter stainless pipe, use PVC caps at both ends, top cap has a hole in it to insert Iron core. sell back to PG&E

  • Wonderful for chemistry homework 5/5 :)

  • goodbye Energizer, forget Duracell, hello lemons )))

    5 stars

  • nice work.. 5/5

  • has anyone tried to make an aluminum air battery? they are very easy to make. all you do is lay a piece of foil on a hard flat surface. and on top of the foil place a salt water soaked paper towel and on top of the towel pour some aquarium filter charcoal and that the charcoal doesnt touch the foil. next, place a bare wire in the charcoal, the plus side, and the other wire connects to the foil. fold the foil/towel over the charcoal and press down to increase voltage. this battery WORKS well!

  • This rocks! I like this guys relaxed approach. Very chill...a good teacher too! Thanks

  • That's wut i thought

  • works with oranges onions potatoes lemons grapefruit too

  • way cool! im impressed, though it seems like alot of work just to light up a tiny light bulb : /

  • do u need the same two metals in both batteries in order to join them? like joining a regular battery and the vinegar one?

  • Is Malt Vinegar acceptable?

  • hi. :)

would the current be increased if the metals used were different?

for example, if you used magnesium and aluminum can it light the bulb?

and, what amp of light bulb would be able to be lighten up by the copper and zinc? :)

can it be amp = 30?

we're doing this project at school.

    hope you can help me.

    thank you.

  • Okay, 2 vinigar batteries are able to power a Caculator. So homemade batteries are able to power an electronic device other than a light bulb.

  • nice man

  • What is the difference between AA batteries and AAA batteries?

  • triple a's are smaller and lighter because they have less milli amps per hour

  • Acetic acid is a weak acid right?

  • Yepp, it's a weak acid because it doesn't dissociate (i.e. creates less ions) hence is less of an electrolyte. i suppose using hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid (which is famous for its presence in batteries) would maintain higher voltage, but sulfuric acid is dehydrating agent and is not so good with organic materials (as in, your hands) so it would be much simpler (and safer) to simply use vinegar.

  • how would u increase the current with the vinegar battery?

  • Connect more batteries (cells) in parallel.

  • Another way to increase the current is with more electrode surface area. You could wind copper wire into a coil and use more galvanized nails

  • can you use orang juice or lemon juice

  • very interesting!!!

  • cool but your not realy going to carry two glasses of vineger to school

  • You can use reverse osmosis water instead of vinegar. Reverse osmosis water is acidic and works very well as an electrolyte with copper and zinc. I actually have done this in a video on metacafe.

  • very cool video thank you

  • what does zinc and copper have to do with positive and negative charges?

  • The two dissimiliar metals create tne necessary Potential Difference needed to create the Primary Cell.

  • its just the 2 metals, and the acid from the vinager creating the volt.....its REALLY hard to explain

  • If all you need to make a battery is some sort of acid and two metals, is it possible to make a battery out of soda drinks like 7up and Sprite which contain citric acid???

  • yes

  • it doesnt contain enoguh

unless you bought like 500 bottles you wouldnt have enough

  • very good

  • Very entertaining! Thanks for this video!

  • que chilero, it's very nice, esto definitivamente es muy interesante,

  • thats very interesting, does a vinegar battery ever run out? because if you still have he acid than shouldnt it not change?

  • thanks alot. i have a science fair coming up can u give me more info about lemon or potato batteries or otehr variotions of this experiment

  • cool i am more smarter yay

  • This was very, VERY interesting to watch! I´m very glad I saw this! All the best!

  • U took my words out of my mouth =o

  • cool

  • This is to roekup but i couldnt reply for some reason.

That makes sense, he said "There are our" and that makes sense u just quoted him wrong.

  • This is cool stuff!!:)

  • I remember doing that in middle school! good stuff

  • u have a nice teaching method

  • i'm not a science person at all but your videos are very interesting.

  • you should be a sceince teacher!

  • Bravo! Excellent work, I enjoyed it very much - nice teaching method!

  • those yellow AA batteries are from ikea!

  • I love your vid, very good, continue ! :)

  • I really liked this, I'm into chemistry/physics as well. Keep posting!

  • youtube can be helpful :)

  • Two Questions:

    1) Do you loose power with the more wires you use to transfer the energy to longer distances like you did with the calculator.

2)Does the energy last for as long as the vinegar exists in the container or does it eventually drain.

  • wish i had him for a science teacher

  • is it ok to show this to a group of student in my class? would that violate copyright infringment?

  • kloran77, no problem, show the video to your students.

  • good stuff

  • Wow first time I've ever found science interesting

  • At 01:24, He says "There are are"

  • This is what we should learn at school.

  • Dude, you're like the Mr. Dressup of science.

  • Very good, thanks for the science lesson.

I'm sure Bill Nye would approve : )

  • good work

  • OMG i learned something in Vacation :O

  • 1.say a boy or girls name u want to be wit 2 times

2.say your best friends name 5 times

3.post this coment on 5 vids

    4.press f8

5.u will see your crushes name

  • Cool stuff. Got any more!!

  • this is really interesting. i can't help but feel like someday this might come in handy. thanks, scienceonline!

  • I was explaining what the difference would be if you used an ocean of vinegar instead of a jar. The ocean wouldn't make the cell/battery any stronger, but it would make it last longer.

  • i like vids like that. gj!

  • WHEN U R READING THIS DONT STOP OR SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN MY NAME IS SUMMER I AM 15 YEARS OLD i have BLONDE HAIR , SCARS no NOSE OR EARS I AM DEAD IF U DONT COPY THIS JUS LIKE FROM THE RING COPY N POST THIS ON 5 MORE SITES OR I WILL APPEAR ONE CREEPY NIGHT WEN UR NOT ExPECTING IT BY YOUR BED WITH A NIFE AND KILL U THIS IS NO JOKE SUMMET ING GOOD WILL HAPPEN TO U IF YOU POST THIS ON 5 MORE FLASH BOXES

  • its a cell not battery!

  • mmmm i think its more cheap to power my house with 500 lemons than vinager

  • copy and paste this into 10 videos or your mom will die in 4 hours

  • fuck you retard

  • very nice..

  • i tried it and it really worked!

  • :o the oil is running out soon .. well run our powerstations on lemons and fill out cars up with malt vinigar lol

  • why stay with 3 V. have some fun

  • does it matter how much viniger there is in the jar? Also how does a battery lose its energy what happens? Does it just lose its acidity or something?

  • How much vinegar will determine how long it lasts, and the rate at which the voltage will drop as the concentration of reactants (yes the acidity (H+ ions)) decreases during operation. Larger volume will equal slower concentration decrease.

  • thank you.

  • yeah, it is very good stuff, i you are lost in a desert, you have only acid in your bag and suddenly your calculator goes off :O

  • wow. . .

-once you learn how to make a battery, you can do almost anything with electronics.

all my five are belong to this.

  • Thanks

  • i never new u can make it out of vin... i new lemon not vin... thats crazy

  • we dont do this shit in my school district loLSLA uBAr p00r public schools lolf we get to look at them doing it in te book lols i dont even think they have zink coated nails we got like rusty finishing nails they found outside

  • OMG I LOVE VINEGAR BUT When im not draing bottle after bottle this might come in handy

  • I just picture myself in school

do you have a battery , Ahh no don't worry i got my vinegar Jars & bunch of nails

    thats totally awesome

    i like those experiment

    GOOD JOB!!!! i want more!

  • EXELENT cogratulation.

  • i thought it was cool. it wasnt the coolEST but it was interesting.

  • His voice is ver calming

  • will these batterys last forever

  • Its cool. I love it.

  • now if you started reading this dont stop

its really scary!ok send this to five other

videos in 143 minutes. when you are done

press F6 and your crushes name will appear

on the screen in big letters this is weird

because it does work. If you break this

chance you wont have a crush in the next

    five years

  • Awesome stuff! I didn't know you could do Lemon and Vinegar batteries! I think I'll use this for something...this was so cool I even showed my sister this! Thanks!

  • There are 20 angels in this world

put this on 4 video comments within 15 mins,if u do, sum one u love will surprise u sum how!! If u don't , u will lose ur love

  • oh gosh I might as well use a lemon

  • now that was just plain cool.

  • Another awesome video. The lemon battery video was a little better, but this was still an awesome video.

  • PLEASE DONT READ THIS. YOU WILL GET KISSED ON THE NEAREST POSSIBLE FRIDAY BY THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. HOWEVER IF YOU DONT POST THIS COMMENT TO AT LEAST 3 VIDEOS YOU WILL DIE WITHIN 2 DAYS. NOW UV STARTED READIN DIS DUNT STOP THIS IS SO SCARY. SEND THIS OVER TO 5 VIDEOS IN 143 MINUTES WHEN UR DONE PRESS F6 AND UR CRUSHES NAME WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN IN BIG LETTERS. THIS IS SO SCARY BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY WORKs

  • thats pretty cool

  • i gotta say these guys vids are cool. but i wanna know how he got this to be over 10 minutes long even though the video length and size limit of 10minutes and 100mb came in some time in 2006. does anyone know???

  • I have to agree with the Bat-Tree comments, but science is cool, like learning this stuff. Yep geek through and through

  • PLEASE DONT READ THIS. if you have started reading this theres no stopping now here is wut a dead little boy told me i have blonde hair and brown eyes and black hair if you do not post this to 15 songs you will die by today or tommorow. (THIS WILL REALLY HAPPEN SO POST IT TO 15 SONGS by 8:45PM

  • Screw you!

  • the yellow battery is from IKEA haha =)

  • lol why dont you use 90% viniger not 4% lol?

  • 4% is the amount of acetic acid in the vinegar, not the amount of vinegar.

  • It's good to see something like this on youtube, but I suspect that it appeals to those of us who are already geeky enough to search it out for ourselves.

  • Gatorade has electrolytes to.

  • awesome video! Someone please test out how long does the vinegar battery last for?? maybe forever?? please post if anyone has tested this out... thank you!

  • it can't possibly last forever... as curent is drawn from the battery, the electrolyte gets depleted. When there's no more dissolved electrolyte, the battery won't supply current any longer.

  • erm, by "electrolyte" I meant the acid in the vinegar. If you allow the battery to run for some time, you'll notice that the one of the electrodes will dissolve, and the vinegar will lose its acidity.

  • Obviously doesnt last forever. The battery is basically oxidation and reduction. After the metal has been reduced or oxidized (copper and zinc), the battery stops working.

  • Very nice videos. Well made and interesting. The rather soothing voice makes me sleepy though :)

  • lol, me too

  • This is great

  • daniele onori daniele onori daniele onori.......cercatelo su youtube...

  • cercatelo?

  • How long does it last before it goes dead

  • it has to be used in an led or a way to use the battery

  • depends on how much current you're drawing from it - the higher the current draw, the less it will last

  • Is the copper ALWAYS the plus terminal?

  • Depends on the type of metals used as electrodes, but usually copper is +. Zinc, on the other hand, has a tendency to act as a electron donor, when in the presence of other common metals, and thus acts as the -.

  • I see, thank you

  • Using electric potentials, you can calculate which electrode is + and which is -.
