u just need to get used to the controls. it gets quite easy after a while. the trick is to go easy, light, and smooth.
hard turns will make you lose speed, so u can turn ur ship into a huge airbrake just by turning hard enough, it is just as effective as the airbrakes, it is useful for tight u turns, because a hard turn will not stop you, but braking will.
