Strange, in viewing this wonderfuly movie, it seemed like they were going through the SAME thing(s) we are going through during THIS generation, losing house's, selfish children, etc. It's a movie to always remember with a big message to go along with it....
The message in this film is priceless. We only have our parents for a short time, they are a gift form God. Children! Cherish and honor your parents....
Think I first saw this on the 10AM matinee movie on TV when I was maybe 8 yrs old in 1960, home ill from school after we moved to the States from Canada. Missed my Nannas, my family terribly. Began going to nursing homes to listen to life stories, realized that I never wanted to end up in one. Now I live in a part of Mexico where there are none, partly because of the geriatric prisons that may well have been my fate had I stayed in the US or Canada. Most older expats here feel the same way.
Also, what i love about this movie is that it has two very good moral lessons. First, honor your Father & Mother and take care of them when they get sick and/or old. And second, save your money. If this movie doesn't give everyone the motivation to save and squirrel away every spare penny you can get your hands on. Then nothing will!
For such a nice elderly couple like this. They sure raised a bunch of selfish ungrateful children! I mean what are the chances ALL of them would be so unfeeling towards there own parents. The bigger picture here is that a few years FDR would bring about SSI. A safety net to protect older couples who couldn't work anymore. Before that if you didn't work your whole life and save your money. You could easily end up on the street or the poor house. You absolutely had to be self-sufficient!
Buelah Bondi spent her whole movie and television career playing far older people than herself. Only on radio did she get to play various ages. What a wonderful actress. As for Victor Moore always loved him. What a great movie, and how true it is today. Since the first baby boomers are now in retirement how many people will find themselves in this situation. North American society should be ashamed of itself. There are other societies were seniors are treasured.
These people are at least 70 with five grown kids who all seem to be doing well, yet their family home is still mortgaged? Crazy. I'd have thought one of the kids would be living with them, paying it off and inheriting the place.
You'll notice that through most of the movie, there's very rarely any feel-good background music ... very unlike most movies being made in Hollywood in the late 30's.
Anyone loving this movie should read the remarkable chapter examining it in the book "Romantic Comedy" by James Harvey. It was a popular book when it was published, and has been reprinted; many libraries should have it.
This 1937 gem is one of the 100 greatest true-to-life tearjerker movies I’ll ever see in my lifetime! Recently saw it on tv. Thank you for posting it online!
I first saw this movie as a teenager. I am now almost 62. This movie is one of the most powerful films I have seen. It has stayed with me all these years. There is an old saying "A mother can take care of 5 children yet 5 children can't take care of one mother" Watch this beautiful movie and if it is still possible call your parents.
Hey - what a nice surprise. Was searching for "Make Way for Tomorrow", a Jerome Kern tune from the Rita Hayworth picture "Cover Girl" and ended up here instead. Not as cheerful, but just as moving. Looking forward to watching the rest of it....
thank you so much! I feel this is the best performance of an actress and actor in Hollywood history! Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi are a master class in acting. I am so glad this is being seen on Youtube.
This nmovie and Tokyo Story prove that our problems cross the boundaries of time and space.
